What a day for the Japanese sports media.

Generous strike 3 call there.

DeLeon doesn’t make it out of the first inning. Announcers say 34 pitches.

Diet Rich walks, but then Blandino, Scheb, and India strikeout. India looked especially bad.

Reds down 3-0.

Just watching the second inning, I detect a more patient approach by Reds hitters.

DD, Blandino, Schebler all worked deep counts. India not so much.

Absurdly early, I know, but still.

Aqunio runs a long way and makes a good effort, but can't hold on to the ball.

I was looking away and could not tell on replay....could Shogo have gotten to it if Aquino let him have it?

Shogo hung in there against lefty with questionable strike two call.

Infield single past the pitcher.

Aquino walks. Two on against Angles lefty.

Casali fans, ends inning.

Wind is apparently blowing in strongly. I think Aquino called him off and then got fooled by how much wind would affect the ball.

I know it's only the 3rd game of spring training, but it already seems like the Reds are being more patient at the plate.

Ron Madden
02-25-2020, 04:14 PM
It's a shame that Shogo has to adapt to a different strike zone for every umpire.

It's hard enough for veteran MLB hitters, may take him awhile to adapt.

JaxRed
02-25-2020, 04:19 PM
Reds do nothing on offense (Aquino walked) in top of 3rd. Josh Smith in to pitch. He walks Upton to lead off inning. He reminds me physically of Cingrani out there....

After retiring a guy, he throws one behind a hitter and then hits him. Next guy flies out. 2 down, 1st and 3rd.

Angels announcers point out Shogo hustle backing up 3rd....

Schebler gets fooled by wind and ball falls in and another run scores.

NebraskaRed
02-25-2020, 04:25 PM
Angels announcers are praising Akiyama's performance in LF.

JaxRed
02-25-2020, 04:39 PM
Dietrich K's swing, Blandino flies out, and Schebler K's looking on a ball that appeared to be inside. Only Reds hit is a Shogo single that maybe should have been handled by pitcher. Smith in to pitch another inning.

JaxRed
02-25-2020, 04:44 PM
Smith K's first guy looking on slightly generous call, then next guy is retired on nice diving catch by Garcia on soft liner. Smith is done, Reyes in. Ohtani retired on easy grounder to 2nd.

Garcia's a good looking prospect. Didn't realize he was that mlong & lanky. Looks like he's got room to fill out that frame. Been hoping for a top-level SS prospect since Barry. Hope his development continues/accelerates.

Reyes still in game, Lots of substittions for Reds. Davidson replaced Dietrich at 1b, Fairchild in for Shogo (LF), Farmer in at C, Payton in for Schebler (RF), Trahan for India (3b).

2nd batter hit hard grounder that Davidson can't handle (called a hit) and then Blandino throws ricochet past the pitcher. Then Davidson boots next grounder for error and run scores.

Nice play on grounder to Garcia to end inning. Angels announcers are appreciative.

It’s just one spring training game, but he looks like he can handle SS defensively just fine.

Aquino gets HBP to start 6th. Farmer, Davidson and Blandino K.

JaxRed
02-25-2020, 05:26 PM
Powers in to pitch. Bell, Barnes and Fairchild in, Aquino, Shogo and Blandino out.

Powers gets first guy on lazy fly, second guy hits dribbler that no one can get to, and then third guy hits soft grounder to SS but too soft to turn two. Powers K's next guy. Good inning, they had no hard contact.

The first HR was off a journeyman reliever, which makes me think Garcia jumps from AA to AAA sometime this season. In no way should he be playing meaningful innings for the Reds this year, barring some superstar leap in his abilities.

If they are going to run out a lineup with A Aquino, C Casali, D Dietrich and S Schebler in it they really could have squeezed Brantley Bell and Mike Moustakis in there. Heck go out and bring in Edwin Encarnacion to round things out and have George Grande do the play by play.

I didn't see who they were off of until now. Keynan Middleton and Cam Bedrosian are both solid middle relievers, it's pretty impressive that a kid who hasn't played above A+ ball went deep off them.

Both of the HRs were hit into the teeth of a strong wind blowing in as well.

Not sayin the kid is now ready for MLB, just that he played an impressive game.

I was watching the video you posted and he has a big body. You would think he would develop some good power. If he keeps developing at a fast rate the Reds may just have their SS for a long time to come.

For fantasy dynasty purposes, Garcia is on my short list of guys who make a big breakout this season.
