no they are not. this was just a choke show by the reds.

How is it a choke?? The tigers have out hit and outpitched the Reds. Now if the Reds had left a whole bunch of runners on base then yes i could see but the offense never once challenged Detroit outside of game 1

Bell is such a moron. He never learns from mistakes. No reason to pull Strop for Gas Can Lorenzen, in addition to all his other nonsense.

bell is proving that his record as a minor league manager was no fluke.

They do? You wouldn't know it watching this series. To lose 2/3 at home in an imperative series to win the Tigers looked much better. Until the Reds start to beat and resemble an AL team then they will never win a dang thing

So far this team looks pretty much like last year's team. Good starting pitching. A bullpen that gives up big hits. And hitting that is really inconsistent.

Pretty pathetic. The season is not over and the team is not awful, but truly good teams take care of business at home against teams like this. You have two or three times the talent they have, there’s no good excuse. The early returns say this is still a team that lacks killer instinct and an ability to play up to their talent. Have to be better, or else you’re just hype.

You let the pitch away go that you can easily drive through the open left side they are giving you to swing at a pitch you can't do anything with except pull into the teeth of the shift for a double play.

Votto hits for his own stats by pulling the ball, but when it counts, with the game on the line - HE SUCKS

I know talking to you is like speaking to a brick wall enclosed by a glass case of emotion but the Tigers were the 2nd worse team in 2019 and did pretty much nothing to get better. The Reds looked bad the last 2 days but they were not a 100 loss team coming into the season like The Tigers.

Right that’s where I’m coming from mostly, they still look pretty flat and he’s the leader, the buck’s gotta stop with him on that end.

I also do think there is starting to be something with some of the moves that seem too clever for their own good too, like his continuing insistence on using Iglesias in situations we know pretty definitively he sucks in, or playing Jankowski over Aquino basically ever.

I don't really have a problem with anything he did this weekend. I don't blame him for pulling Bauer and Castillo, it made sense given it was their first start and they didn't have the normal spring training build up.

At the end of the day, it's up to the bullpen to perform when they get the ball. You can't walk guys and give up long balls.

I can't blame him for counting on Lorenzen early in the year. He had a very good 2019, unlike most others to choose from.

Also, Reds wasted two sensational starting performances.

How many outings like that do you get in a 60-game season?

You can’t assume that will happen regularly, even with excellent starters.

I could live with today’s loss, they battled in a close well pitched game.

Yesterday, Saturday, the bullpen just simply gave the game away

If this is what we've got, I would be very nervous if I were Bell and Krall.

It's a shame that Dick Williams has lifetime job security.
Wasn't he the guy that said all winter that the bullpen was not a problem, that the team needed more offense instead?
The extra offense is certainly welcome, but he was really sticking his head in the sand by only adding Strop.
On the plus side though, the shorter season probably means the better bullpenners won't be worn out from overuse as they were last year.

The MO for any team and any manager is that you go to the guys that are supposed to be you main guys first. That’s Inglesias and Lorenzen. Every team does this. They are earmarked for these roles.

In a normal 162 game season, you’ll give them the first 4-6 weeks of the season to settle in. But the trouble is, we don’t have that much time. The really tricky part is how many opportunities do they get in the new weird world.

Either Williams or Krall.. I am pretty sure it was Williams said that the bullpen was
not the problem in 2019. He said if the Reds had a better offense last year, they
would not have been in as many close games.
I am not going to google the article for you.
I have stopped doing that on Redszone, because when I do, the person that
calls "Shenigans" either vanishes or continues the argument on something
unrelated to not lose face. He said it. I am pretty sure the link was posted
on Redszone. Look for it.

If you don't believe Williams' words, look at his actions.
He loaded up on offense, and really the only significant bullpen move was Strop (which
is looking good so far, but not nearly enough)

not the problem in 2019.

Guess what? I don't care.
Like I said, if I spent the time posting the link, you would vanish.
I'll let you get the last word in.

Since I'm bored and waiting on the lineup so we can resume our bashing of Bell's logic (not saying it's not deserved), I took the liberty of looking this up-

Thanks for finding that. I hope that makes Ron happy. Most likely he will conveniently forget to come back to this thread.

I'm back. I'm on Redszone everyday.

Looks like you forgot to acknowledge that your hero Dick Williams did actually say the bullpen was good last year.

“You’re talking about almost 90 games that the last three or four innings, one swing of the bat can change the outcome,” said Dick Williams, the Reds’ president of baseball operations. “Every decision was scrutinized and that’s just the nature of baseball in close games. I think a lot of attention was starting to be paid to our bullpen. They were so good and such a strength, but because we were in every game and fighting in close battles, we did put a lot of pressure on those guys.”

Williams says the bullpen deserved more credit than it received.

“When they did let things get away, I think they were, at times, unfairly scrutinized because I really think when the offense had chances to provide separating runs, get big leads, jump out, we just didn’t get quite enough of that, taking pressure off the pitching at times,” Williams said. “I felt like, I’m generalizing, more often than not, the offense ended up being a culprit.

The offense was a bigger problem than the bullpen last year, though. Dick was right about how thin the margins were for the bullpen in 2019.
