Moose getting loose?
Second baseman Mike Moustakas is nearing a return to the field, manager David Bell said before the opener in Milwaukee. Moustakas, who has been sidelined with a bruised left quad, could return to the lineup by Tuesday, following the scheduled off-day on Monday.

Moustakas has played in seven games so far this season, logging five hits in 21 at-bats. He last appeared in a game on Aug. 4 at home vs. Cleveland.

As per my thread earlier today, makes no sense that Aquino can’t play tonight against the lefty. Rules are antiquated. Reds should be able to activate Aquino and de-activate Senzel just for the game or rest of this series. AA is on the forty.

Let’s hope it doesn’t matter and Reds win comfortably without his RH bat.

Davidson has a lifetime .813 OPS against lefties, good not great for a specialist. But his last full season, 2018, it was over .880 in 131 MLB PAs. And .941 against lefties in the PCL in 2019.

Nevertheless, they were outs and they upped the pitch count by only the minimum. If you swing at the first pitch, unless there is a special situation, like needing to get the runner in from 3rd, you need to get a hit over 50% of the time.

Now you've got it, 0-0 pitch should be taken more than the 3-0 pitch, and the 3-0 pitch should be swung at more, but both should be a base hit on over 50% of the swings or you are hurting your team.

You are saying that every batter should take the first pitch of the AB.

I don’t think you understand the math.

You would basically be guaranteeing your hitter would be in a 0-1 hole if they took every first pitch, as the opponents would figure that out in a hurry.

Have you seen how much hitters stats go down when the first pitch is a strike?

I have to disagree. Unless you're great at hitting it where they ain't, you're not going to get a base hit on over 50% of your swings on a 3-0 count. You might put it in play but, you can't guarantee a hit. These guys have seen thousands of pitches playing baseball. I say they should swing more at the first pitch as the pitcher is looking to get ahead in the count. So, the pitcher will generally throw a first pitch fastball especially if his scouting report states that particular batter usually takes the first pitch.

You have to have the mindset that you need to get a hit over 50% of the times you swing at the first pitch in most situations, being very selective in what you swing at, and in what situation. But you should not swing so infrequently that a pitcher thinks he can groove one. Maybe less than 20% of the time should you go to the plate resolved to for sure not to swing. You have to have a plan on pitch and location to swing at, not "see the ball, hit the ball", like you might have with 2 strikes. I would like to know what hitters have the highest average on first pitches, and what % of first pitches they swing at.

No one would be close to .500, as a number of those pitches would be missed or fouled off.

I believe Votto is over .400 if you only count the first pitch swings he puts into play. That’s considered spectacular.

His ability to hit first pitches so well is one of the reasons why pitchers are so careful with first pitches against him, which leads to walks.

If you can get a line drive on the first pitch, you jump at it.

Votto is a great example of a great 1st pitch hitter. I'm sure he goes up with a definite plan on what kind of a pitch it must be for him to swing, and he sticks to it. Does anyone know what % of first pitches Votto swings at, and what % of those he puts in play? Like President Trump, my original statement may have been an aspirational goal, like his desire to have things opened up by Easter, or a free throw shooter thinking he needs to be 100%, or a CF thinking he should not have an error for a season.

Disco!

I think he's got a little left in him, but I might go Garret in the 7th given that Yelich and Morrison are coming up.

Its an even tougher decision with the 3 batter rule! If you leave the P in, to start the inning, and the first batter gets on, then the relief pitcher can't come out of the game until you may be behind 4-3.

Problem is Reds don’t have another lefty bat for later. I guess Barnhart, if necessary.

So if you use Shogo there, you can get stuck if game gets tied up.

Not every manager would make the move, but Bell likes to be aggressive. Glad it worked out.

I have never seen any team, yet alone the REDS, loaded with this many quality Starting Pitchers.

As someone who watched a thousand Mariners games in the mid-'90's, I know too well that even if you have a quality starting staff and an All-Star lineup, you will still fail to win important games if your bullpen lets you down.

Our bullpen has got to find itself.
