momentum is a hell of a thing in sports. reds had a chance to really put the hammer down in the top of the 6th with men on the corners and only one out. bell chooses to allow barnhart to hit (against a lefty, no less) and he grounds into a double play. horrible decision by bell. even worse than allowing gray to go back out there for the 6th when he was clearly gassed.

this game could go downhill very fast if the reds aren't very careful.

Many posters here have argued that the team shouldn’t rely on relievers being good from one year to the next. They historically have been volatile.
Well no that's your pet theory about how you should just constantly be swapping bullpen guys year in and out in case they suddenly get bad. I'm not at all opposed to being hyperactive about the bullpen but not just because "well he's been consistently good but maybe he'll be bad this year, so let's dump him".

You can if your name is David Bell.

Realistically, what is he supposed to do? The bullpen is full of question marks and regularly shows off its inconsistency.

I can't blame him for hoping the guy who's had a pretty good career and been fairly reliable the past two years would perform accordingly.

You just can't have these sorts of meltdowns regularly, the bullpen can give up runs here and there but anybody involved in these consistent trainwreck innings (Lorenzen, Reed) needs to be sent packing.

We might need to go with a piggyback strategy and use TM and TA to come in and throw 3 innings. They say Lodolo is doing well so I may see what he can do in a three inning role. We just donít have enough relievers to go one inning night after night. If those guys could eat some innings we may be able to get by with PS, AG and RI.

My 2c on Lorenzen for what it's worth. He's a decent guy to have in the pen in normal circumstances. Something at the moment is WAY off with him. He's having a 'mare and putting him in into that situation is bad management for me. Needs taking out of the firing line not being thrown in when there's runners on and no outs in a close game. Either option him or work on him, but Bell needs to stop putting him in situations he's just not mentally equipped for at the moment. I think there's a decent reliever in amongst all that muscle but he needs good management, or he'll just spiral. What Bell did there was effectively leave a revolver on the table and walk out on him.

Thom’s defense of Bell’s decisions seems weak. He says of each one, “It didn’t work out.” But each decision made it more difficult for the team to succeed. Letting Barnhart bat in that situation put the offense at a disadvantage for some obscure thing about not changing catchers. Leaving Gray in (which I mostly support, but it was a risk). Then bringing in the least-effective members of the struggling bullpen. Bell chose his fate.

IMO, both SPs struggled because the strike zone was highly inconsistent. Made them throw a lot more pitches than they should have.

I guarantee you that Bell went to Gray after the 5th and ask him how he felt. He clearly had gas left in the tank, otherwise he would have pulled himself out.
