Really hoping for a good one from Castillo today, his road starts so far this year have been underwhelming.

I’m not one to blame BABIP luck, but Castillo has pitched much better than his results.

On the other hand, he’s got the proverbial Winker/Castellanos outfield so a flare could drop in occasionally.

It’s time for things to go Castillo’s way.

I wonder if the league just kinda figured out Castillo somewhat after the ASB last year. He was pretty bad in the second half. I don’t think he sucks or anything, he still flashes quite a bit of talent but I wonder if he’s more like a 2/3 starters than a potential ace like many believed he could be last year.

Too early to make any real determination, and the whole “is Cueto an ace” discourse still haunts my brain, but it is pretty obvious that Gray and Bauer are the better pitchers right now which makes him the Reds 2020 #3.

I honestly believe the umpire messed up Castillo. Not a valid excuse, he has to deal with it.

But I thought Luis grooved a 3-2 pitch to Soler because he couldn’t get a strike call on the corners. Didn’t want to walk the bases loaded. That opened the door to the big inning.

This is an example of excellent coaching and scouting. The Royals have already seen first hand the Reds strengths and weaknesses, and they have attacked the weaknesses. They are quite ready for Castillo's m.o. They are laying off the junk and forcing him to throw fat pitches. They are pitching to each Reds hitter's weakness. They capitalized on the time off and are ready. What have the Reds been doing meantime?

There's a lot of easy targets for finger pointing, but really this team is across the board underachieving. Suarez isn't hitting, Votto looks 46 not 36. Few exceptions but for me if the players love playing under Bell they definitely aren't showing it.

It’s time to clean house people. Especially the entire scouting department. The Reds have had all these high draft picks, trading off all stars, etc, for years now. Why don’t we have a single Tatis Jr, or Bo Bichette, Austin Meadows, Juan Soto, Acuña Jr, etc, etc, etc. The best our scouts have produced in a decade of high draft picks has been Senzel & Winker. That is pathetic. I thought Aquino could maybe be a game changer but they won’t even let him play when it matter. lol

I think the 60 game season is going to hurt Shogo more than anyone. Its a big transition from Japan to American ball. When 60 games is up, I expect he will start to have turned the corner, however, the stat line is likely to be quite terrible. I think his next 100 games would have been better.

Couple thoughts so far...

Votto's D is really bad this year so much so that you need to think about sitting him occasionally although I know that will never happen.
Akiyama is struggling and I'm not sure how he avoided getting HBP in his 2nd at bat, but he needs to get some gear on and take one for the team. Bell needs to talk to him about that.

Frustrating....

this is why downplaying the 8-11 start against (mostly) bad teams was foolish on the part of some fans. as if it's going to get better when the reds start playing good teams. So the season is 1/3 over. Reds could not even play 500 ball with an easy schedule to start with.
Yes, this team is a disaster. With the expanded playoffs, it should have been a slam dunk to make it.
They still might do that, but honestly, it's going to be tough.
So after this game 9-12.
We were guessing 30 games (.500) might make the playoffs -- it could be more, but that's the minimum. Can they go 21-18 the rest of the way? That seems reasonable, but I'm not sure they have it in them.

The degree to which the Royals and Tigers are pushovers has been exaggerated, they aren't the same squads that they were last season, but the Reds have to win game #2 just to ultimately manage a split in the 10 games against them combined for the season. Sagarin has the Royals & Tigers ranked 14th and 29th, fivethirtyeight has them ranked 26th and 29th. Neither team will likely make the playoffs. They are pushovers.
Even when I get on the Reds case you do this “erm, actually” bit.

9-12 against this schedule is pathetic.

If Bell doesn't drop Suarez in the lineup I don't know what to say...

He’s got nepotism on his side. All good.

Anxiously awaiting Thom's apology for tonight's faux pas and looking forward to comparing it to his "Jack Clark is Dead" apology.

Controversial homophobic statement on camera[edit]
On August 19, 2020 while providing commentary for a home game between the Reds and the Kansas City Royals, Brennaman made a statement referring to an undisclosed location as "the fag capital of the world."[4]
