My Tea Leaves (@tm) reading is that if Stephenson is back in next few days, Mahle goes down. And then comes back as 29th man next Saturday for DoubleHeader. Except I'm not sure if he'd be eligible to come back back. Is 29th man exempt from the 10 day rule?

Kc61

Not sure about Payton, but still prefer this lineup with Winker at DH and Payton in LF.

Should be much better defensively, and Payton can’t be worse against RHP than Van Meter was.

Hopeful this will work out.

Under the 26th man rule, which was in place before this season, Mahle would be eligible for the doubleheader in that situation. I assume that same rule applies to the current “29th man” situation.

Why keep putting an automatic out in the middle of the order? Geno should play every day but get him out of the middle of the lineup until he starts producing.

So I tuned in to the game today (a rare occasion), and I notice that the Reds are wearing what looks like batting practice jerseys instead of their usual red jerseys? Or did they change their design this year?

At any rate, I don't like the script "Reds". I preferred the ones that were red/white negatives of the home jerseys.

There is absolutely nothing to indicate a lack of leadership or urgency. It is completely unfounded. It’s what fans say out of frustration when they see bad baseball.

Batting slumps become contagious and get magnified by pressing. That is the common reason for these kinds of team slumps.

I would agree after Iggy signed for what he did, but the opportunity to get Galvis needed to be taken before they would know about Iggy. I think they made the prudent choice at the time.

There is absolutely nothing to indicate a lack of leadership or urgency. It is completely unfounded. It’s what fans say out of frustration when they see bad baseball.

It's been like a three year slump though. I just don't understand on it's on face, this is a team with talent. So I do start to believe there's a problem with leadership or an internal flame that isn't being sparked, the kind of things that the Reds finally got when they traded for Rolen.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not.

You're 26 games into a season. Not a week. Not two weeks. THOSE are team slumps for MLB teams. Something *might* be missing. It's not "completely unfounded" to suggest it as a mere possibility.

Exactly. Look around the league and even bad teams are hitting better with clearly less talent. It has to be the leadership. We see that the pitching is clearly getting it done or at least the starters yet the hitters are just stuck in a 3 year rut while we’ve changed personnel and coaching. It’s hard to wrap your head around.

I had high hopes and have been disappointed also. But I still think he'll end up much better than this. He is facing pitchers he's never seen every single day, plus still getting adjusted to everyday baseball life in America. If it weren't such a short season and he had more time to get into a rhythm, I wouldn't be as concerned. He does seem to have good raw talent, especially on d. Hopefully we'll start to see a consistent bat soon.

Especially with the way he's hitting now, Votto is clearly not a fit at leadoff. Who else could they try there?

Winker's hit there before, but if his power stroke continues, he's probably better to have in an rbi spot. Galvis doesn't have high enough OBP for leadoff. Shogo fits the profile, but he's not consistent enough yet. Senzel works if he can ever stay healthy. So frustrating to watch this bunch continue to flounder.

What a garbage call by the umpire

Not really, per the rule book, it was the right call.
Umps just don’t call it.

Actually a good call, but 1st time I’ve ever seen it called.

yeah, Winker clearly leaned into it.....I do not understand why the only guy that has been hitting for almost 2 weeks is trying to take a base by getting hit when we are down 4 runs in the 8th?

This team is just not good. Starting pitching doesn’t matter when you can’t score runs and the bullpen gives up runs like ours does. I’d talked myself into thinking we would turn it around but after this series we’re done. We have about 10-11 players in the team that we should keep and deal the day at the deadline or dump them after the season. We need a rebuild.

Only the Reds can do these kind of things.

Might as well get used to the idea of watching yet another post season that doesn’t include the Reds.
No chance they are winning anything with this coaching staff and GM.
Unfortunately.
Hope I’m wrong, but I’m not.

I called it all the time in high school and every now and then they’ll call it in college. Never seen in in an MLB game.

Lord, this is a mess my team is in. Great starting pitching most of the time and then bringing in not ready for prime time players. This learning on big show time makes it hard to watch, though I will watch every night. Just frustrating

Because the Reds don't want to pay the money better players demand.

I’d rather have Brandon Phillips DHing or playing everyday than 1/3 of the guys David bell is running out there.

What if we had robotic strike zone?
Who makes that call on Winker?

The human ump calls the HBP and the robot's buzzer in his pocket indicates the pitch was in the zone, and takes precedence. Human umps are responsible for HBPs, fouls or not, balks, baserunning outs at home, catchers interference, batters interference, etc.
