This season, Goodwin has a 105 OPS+. Senzel is hurt. Other than Castellanos, he's the best OF they have. When Senzel returns, Goodwin should play LF - possibly platooning with Aquino.

What a difference a year does NOT make. After 39 games last season, the Reds were 17-22. This season, same record.

Here are some oddities: In 2019, the team had a +30 run differential. This compares to the -27 run differential that they are sporting in 2020. This team is a relative -57 runs worse than in 2019, and has the same record. Strange game this baseball.
2020 has seen the team score 8 fewer runs than in 2019. This in spite of the three major offensive additions over the winter. The pitching staff has given up 49 more runs compared to last year! Whoa!

2019's winning percentage after 39 games (.436), after 60 games (.467), and after 162 games (.463). Last year's squad finished 28-32 after playing 60 games. Would that be enough to make the expanded playoffs in 2020? Or would that be close but no cigar?

Stay tuned.

Jose Garcia must be Ozzie Smith with the glove, because he is OPSing under .400, and has an OPS+ of 7. Yes, 7.

It's a small sample size but Goodwin hasn't impressed me yet.

.779 OPS in five major league seasons as a pretty good defensive CF/LF. Impresses me.

That’s his record, not some snippets on a TV screen after a few days. With Bell pulling him in and out of games like a third down pass rusher.

He has a lifetime batting average of 253. I wasn't expecting much from him or Bradley.

Garcia has brought welcome speed to a slow infield. As far as the hitting, I sense Williams/Krall/Bell just decided he plays pretty much full time.

It’s kind of an odd decision in a desperate pennant chase. But that’s the sense I get. Even if Galvis is hurt, they still have Farmer if they wanted a more experienced player.

Kc61

.253 would be the second highest BA on the Reds right now, excluding Tyler Stephenson’s few at bats.

No Red is hitting above .250 other than Winker. If you want to use BA as the correct metric. Team is hitting .215, last in the NL in BA.

When I just looked and saw Reds team hitting .215, it brought home how miserable things have been.

I mean, while BA isn’t considered that important, who can win a pennant hitting .215 as a team?

On Goodwin's first day with the Reds. I believe it was Pic who said Bell asked Goodwin where in the OF he felt most comfortable at and he said CF.
I agree with you. Looks like Bell lets some of the players pick where they wanna play not where they need to play.
Remember when Castellanos was pulled late in a game for defense? Then he threw a fit and hasn't been pulled since. Anytime in the 9th inn. that this team has a lead Nick should be planted on the bench.

This team deserves to crash and burn going with Akiyama (.200/.292/.260/.552) over Aquino.

And I know bb will back me up on that.

I guess the question is who is the better CFer and who is the better LFer.

Goodwin plays shallow CF, he looks ok out there with that style.

Shogo looks smooth in CF, not sure about his range, he looks excellent in LF.

Is this really an issue, not sure it is.

Ironman92
09-05-2020, 05:52 PM
I’m not going to act like I care about the OF defense when the INF defense is bad.

I want Aquino in there until he’s shown that he’s more fail than not.

Put 24 year old Andruw Jones in CF if you want....our defense would still suck though

Having the second highest BA on the team and not setting the world on fire are not mutually exclusive. OPS is overrated. Pete Rose had a low OPS because he was a singles hitter. Pete Rose's OPS+ is ranked 411th all time. I would argue that there is no way I can think of 410 other guys that I would like to have on my team ahead of Pete Rose.

Garcia is just not ready. He probably needs at least another full year in the minor leagues.

In a season where moves are being made to go for it, this decision I get the least

I’d go straight platoon. Galvis can hit righties pretty well, and let Garcia hack it in a more favourable matchup and add defensive value. Consistently ugly at bats.

I was skewered for suggesting that some AA or AAA time might be important for Garcia. Didn’t I see how he hit in spring training?

As for the Reds, I assume they felt the infield defense was killing them, which isn’t wrong.

Don’t know what’s with Galvis, I’m assuming some injury, he hasn’t been on the field for days.

That could be true.

I agree that people got a little excited about his spring training production. Small sample, watered down competition... like it’s still a guy that had very good league adjusted stats in high A.

He’s not even close to ready with the bat. Galvis has struggled for sure, and if it’s injury related everything makes a tad more sense.

Kudos to Brantley and Lecure discussing Reds’ lack of sound fundamentals this year.

Too many mistakes giving teams extra outs and extra bases, just as they are saying.

Happens way too often on defense and sometimes on offense by not hitting the fly ball or hitting into a key DP.

What would have happened on that tapper if the runner had been on first like he should have? Would Disco have thrown it to 2nd, or the runner tried to score, or would be the same with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out?

Too slow for a DP, so probably same play. Hold the runner at third and throw to first.

4-0 doesn't feel like much of a lead with the potential this defense has of giving them back.

He can't stretch too soon when the fielder is on the run. It's when they are set and he knows where the throw is supposed to be coming from that he stretches toward the fielder before the ball is released. Since those were on the run, he stretched toward the ball.

I just don’t se the point in bringing up Garcia at all. Galvis was batting 7-8 and was doing what was signed to do. He showed up ready to play this year. Even if Garcia was a little better it wouldn’t matter. The 8 spot isn’t the reason we’re 5 games under 500. Just from a baseball organization strategy it made no sense.

It was a bad throw and it threatened to put him in the path of the runner.

Winker in LF is more of an issue when you factor in Castellanos in RF.

The Reds are a bad defensive team that lacks range across the board. Rearranging the pieces isn't going to fix it.
