Honestly though, I think Goodwin is playing great, he is arguably our best overall OF.
Small sample size, but he's probably our best defender -- that's why I said "best overall".
I realize he's off to a slow offensive start in Cincy, but I have a lot more faith that his bat will come around as opposed to Shogo or Aquino.. I fully support starting Goodwin for at least every game vs RH pitchers, I would play him every day to be honest.

LF can be the rotating OF audition spot, and the place to let Winker occasionally play defense.

Yes, Galvis is still ok at short but probably has lost a step or two. Seems better suited for second now.

Of course it’s the Winker/Castellanos OF but hopefully it works out. Goodwin covers some ground.

You need a center fielder. Someone who plays the position for a living.

Working farmer into the rotation against a righty is odd.

I’d have Aquino in left, Winker at first, moose at second, Galvis at Ss.

Problem solved.

It would be a lot easier for Bell to put Aquino is CF if he had two guys in the corners that were above average defensively. Instead, he has two guys that lack range and make boneheaded plays from time to time.

Aquino and Goodwins splits are not significantly different based on the pitcher from what I recall. Maybe my memory is failing me, but has Aquino made many mistakes in the outfield when he has played? I do not really recall an error but I recall several very good plays. I think he may one of our best defensive outfielders.

I just hope Reds have a better outfield plan next year. This year they’ve had maybe a dozen guys altogether. The ones who made the team weren’t all necessarily their best. I’ve found it dizzying frankly. Just pick your four best OFers to get the main playing time and add a fifth or a utility. With depth at AAA. Decide on Aquino, one way or the other.

After the last two years I think bringing all these guys in to compete is hurting the team. Baseball players need to know they are going to play and we end up with a bunch of guys looking over their shoulder and pressing. They also don’t get enough at bats in the spring and then the season starts and we’re platooning and trying to give everyone starts. I really like him, but he kind of feels like found money also. I recall he was pretty good last year in minors, but I do not recall hearing much hype about his since we drafted him in 2014. Then suddenly, you have a competent starting pitcher that is 26 years old and many years of team control.

I apologize, you are correct. I went back on the Pirate ATT network and tailed a lot right at the end. When I watched I had seen it on the plate. Before I typed what i did, I went back at the chart on MLB gameday and it showed it tipping the edge of the zone.

Now Castellanos gets a sinker in the upper middle part of the zone and hits it out to CF for the 2-0 lead.

And, as I’ve said too many times, they could have bolstered other areas by trading off the overflow of OFers.

It was a strange off-season with COVID, so maybe Reds couldn’t finish off the roster with late deals. From Aquino’s perspective, I don’t think this approach was helpful to him.

As Brantley just explained nobody on the Reds acted as the cut off man.

Aquino had 732 minor league games in RF and 6 in CF.

The issue with AA is why others are playing the corners instead of him; CF isn’t his position.

he was throwing to a cutoff man? I just went back and watched the play, where should the cutoff man have been set up? The ball Goodwin threw from shallow CF was 6-7' off the pitchers rubber on the 3rd base side. He will get another chance and I will take a look...maybe I was wrong, just looked like a very average arm at best to me which is not a great fit for CF.

So tired of the infatuation with that style of player in these small ballparks, too many of them who bring nothing else to the table other than HR's and K's, mediocre defense, no real speed, no other high level skills that stand out. Just boring frankly. And every pitcher has to throw 100 mph now until their arm falls off. At what point do they move on from this management team and style in the front office? They aren't building good, balanced rosters, they can barely scratch one together with this farm system half the time. Frustrating.

Lots of choices, including Aquino, but you can't expect a bad hitter like Davidson who is only batting only .229 for his career and who is only getting a hit 23% of the time. I agree, this was a golden opportunity to close the gap. Instead, the Reds can only get a split.
Reds need to go 12-7 the rest of the way , just to finish 500 (If they are lucky, that gets them into the playoffs)
I just don't see it happening. I hope it does, but that's a lot to ask, given that 15 of the 19 games left are against hard teams.

This is words from our closer after the game:

“I was trying to focus myself on pitching lower in the strike zone and get a slow roller to get a double play,” Iglesias said. “Unfortunately, that's not what happened. I tried my best to do that, but [sometimes] things like that happen in baseball, and unfortunately, it just didn't go my way today.”

Did he not know the bases were not loaded and you cant get a groundball doubleplay with runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out????? Plus Bell was dumb not to walk the bases loaded to setup a force at the plate.

Patrick Bateman
09-07-2020, 11:59 AM
Unbelievable. How stupid.

It’s actually not a bad strategy at face value. Look for a pitch you can make good contact on... don’t expand your strike zones or areas of the plate you hit weakly.

In Suarezs quote he’s talking about hitting line drives and not necessarily swinging completely uphill... hone runs a function of line drives.

These aren’t bad principles.

I would assume (maybe a big assumption) that some form of situational hitting is added on top of this, but you wouldn’t know from watching the team.

I would argue that players not succeeding with this expand the strike zone too much, or aren’t that talented. The Reds hit into a ton of double plays because they have players exploited by shifts and reaching outside their zone to make mediocre groundball contact.
