I think it may be with Lorenzen starting, the pitchers are gonna need all the help behind the plate they can get. I suppose the thought is, Tucker squeezes more out of bad pitchers.

My thought is, Stephenson's bat more than makes up for it.

I agree that Stephenson need to play especially tonight because more than likely they're going to score a fair amount of runs to win. I'm rooting hard for the Reds to win tonight but I got to be honest that lineup looks like the type you run out in meaningless September baseball

With Stephenson I am guessing it's just a case of easing him in. I imagine there is a lot that goes into preparing for a game for a catcher. They have a big impact on the pitching strategy and likely have to do some homework, strategy with coaching, maybe meet with the starter, etc.

He's probably up learning from the more experienced guys and getting his feet wet.

With Garcia and SS it's different...he doesn't have any direct impact on pitching strategy and doesn't have deal with any of this.

That’s all Lorenzen needs is a rookie catcher who may never have worked with him before.

We’re not talking about a pitcher who has everything under control these days.

Well then he has no business starting the game. Michael arenson has been in a big league since 2015. If he needs Tucker Barnhart the old his hand then I hope at the end of the year he is non-tendered. Because that's embarrassing

I would GUESS that Stephenson would do just fine behind the plate and probably add good bit to the offense. Seeing these games are crucial I would also GUESS Bell is worried Stephenson could mess up and cost them with pitches, etc? Trying to look at all angles. I will add Stephenson has a gun in throwing out runners so that should not be a concern. It's Bell's job here so he will win or lose with his choices.

Lorenzen isn’t a starter and has a 5.23 ERA out of the bullpen. It’s sub-optimal, an emergency situation and the Reds/fans can only hope he finds himself tonight.

Why have Lorenzen - of all “starting” pitchers - work with a rookie catcher?

It’s not embarrassing, it’s the result of injuries to Miley and Gray with few good, experienced starters available.

I thought they said that was the last 20 runs they'd scored against the Pirates. People are calling those hits bloops but those were all great pieces of hitting, taking the ball where it was pitched. Love seeing them move the down the line and score runs without the long ball.

The whole season of course is abnormal. But I don't think we're expecting top level play out of Votto at this stage of his career and life. But it's really weird to me how drastic the gap is between his play at home and on the road. Playing at a MVP level at home and playing like a guy that never should have reached the majors on the road.

But overall yeah. Although some of the loss of power the past couple of years was believed to be due to back issues.

Besides needing wins, sweeping the Pirates will help the Reds playoff chances as the first tie-breaker between non-division opponents is intra-division record. (For division opponents it's head-to-head)

He uses the pine tar on his bat to get a better grip. Once he holds the bat, he gets it on his hands. Then he touches his helmet. He's not putting it on his helmet for any reason.

Seems to me that Craig Biggio in Houston was one of the first players to do it, followed by several members of the Red Sox in the 00's. The idea is that if the batter needs some extra grip, then all he needs to do is touch the top of his head to get some pine tar, instead of calling time and going back to the on-deck circle.

Lorenzen is a relief pitcher, he’s thrown 60 pitches.
