MVP Miley, went after that squirter like a cat. A cat w/ 3 legs and no tail and one eye. Still good to get him an inning and the W.

Seriously, "potentially" Miley could be an asset to the bullpen. We spoke of this with two of our Starters, Miley being an obvious choice, back before the season began, that they could help the bullpen in the playoffs. The other candidate being DeSclafani or Mahle. Looks like Mahle has earned a spot in the playoff rotation, though. Bauer, Castillo, Mahle and Gray in a 4-man rotation throughout the playoffs.

Potentially Miley could be a good starter and reliever. But with a mediocre season, up and down with injuries, today was not the day to see what he had to contribute. He has shown incapable in similar opportunities this year.

If we win one more game we are very likely to make the playoffs.

Both The Cards and Brewers cannot finish ahead of us if we win one more. So basically, one win means the Phillies need to win out to beat us, as we hold the tie breaker. The giants play 5 games in San Diego.

Zero problem with Miley pitching the 9th tonight. That was *not* high leverage, and if he had turned it into high leverage, I'm sure the leash was short. A guy like that, either you have a useful piece for the playoffs or you don't, and I'm pretty sure you'd rather find that out now and not in Atlanta. Doubly important to figure it out since pitching out of the pen is something new for him. [Also: don't I make it look easy to be this calm and cool once that game is over, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight?]

And whattya know, now that The Astros got busted and thereís all this scrutiny heís suddenly human again.

Yu Darvish was right. Iím confident in it.

I'd not heard tell of the Brewers being cheaters until MLB was getting close to announcing the Astros's punishment in late Jan/early Feb this year, but one of my good friends lives in Milwaukee and said there was a bit of hand-wringing going on.... specifically, as far as Reds' fans would be concerned, you could look at Luis Castillo's starts against the Brewers, and add that to the pile of circumstantial evidence. Don't remember specifically, but it was something like two 7-inning 1-hitters at GABP and 2 games where he couldn't get out of the 4th inning at Miller Park.

But then, MLB decided it would be best to not focus on how widespread the cheating was, brought the hammer down on Cora, and everybody else got a pass. C'est la vie....

Rick, good thoughts, and yes normally 5 run lead in 9th not high leverage.

But this wasnít any normal game. This was an absolute must win. Two base runners would have made it high leverage, and the best way to close a game out in that scenario is preventing it from being high leverage. Iggy has been dynamite, but he has blown up twice this year, and several times last year. It does happen, and I donít think
It was an appropriate time to risk creating an opportunity for it to happen after our offense finally put some runs on the board.

The thought of Miley bringing the gas can with him definitely danced around in my head. If Bell had brought him out in the 8th after we saw him warming in the bottom of the 7th, he should have been forced to undergo immediate brain surgery. But in the 9th with a 5 run lead, I think it’s fine to bring a rather proven vet like Miley in there for the work.

Thanks. :)

I'm just stopping by now and then to relax and unwind -- maybe talk about Andy Taylor or Norse mythology, and update lists that I've poured a lot of time into in the past, and talk a little baseball history.

I'm still not taking this season (or this club) too seriously -- it just feels like an asterisk of a season to me. I don't like a lot of the rules changes, though I understand why they were made; however, I am quite fearful that some (or all) of them will be made permanent in future seasons -- it's just not the baseball I grew up with.

Nonetheless, I am trying to keep a cheerful disposition for the most part, as I realize that a lot of people are getting into the playoff chase, and I don't want to pee in anyone's Wheaties. I do hope the Reds do well, but my excitement level this season has been very subdued.

Our grounds crew is the best in baseball.
