Leafs legend George Armstrong has died - https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/30771753/hockey-hall-famer-toronto-maple-leafs-legend-george-armstrong-dies-90. He was the captain of their last Cup winner in 1967 and was #2 on the NHL's all-time leading scoring list when he retired (behind the Rocket).

I know this was two weeks ago, but I saw the night he passed and looked up a lot of his history. Some real interesting stuff.

There's got to be a zone that goalies have to get into where they need to know where everyone is at all times through instinct. If they're just adjusting then they're always going to be just tad too late.

Goalies are a lot like pitchers in baseball, they have unique training needs and need regular reps and freedom to exercise their style alone and with live action simulation. Once they fall out of their safe zone their mechanics take a hit and that breaks their game. If pandemic rules limit ice time and the type of assault practices a goalie can exercise than that will affect their process and in turn that will affect the game as a whole. Just like pitchers.
Another thing about this odd season is I'd like to see a breakdown of the penalty calls by bubble, if I'm correct each self contained division is using the same bank of refs. This can lead to players sculpting their style of play to suit those refs. Whereas in a real season the refs change enough that you can't depend on a call to go a certain way night after night.

Rangers' Anthony DeAngelo: Will be bought out
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
DeAngelo's contract will be bought out after the season, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
The Rangers gave DeAngelo the option of having his contract terminated so he could find a new team but he declined the opportunity. The 25-year-old has one assist this season and hasn't appeared in a game since January. He's expected to have his contract bought out this offseason and will become an unrestricted free agent.

What sucks about that is his contract will be draining their cap space for an extra two seasons.

Why would Canada not allow vaccinated family members of the Lightning attend the match? Very disappointing for a country that strongly supports the sport and league. If the lightning complete the sweep tonight, it will be the second year in a row where they will have won the Stanley Cup without family in attendance.

I was just reading that Vegas is exempt from the Seattle expansion draft. Now, that probably made sense back when they were putting the rules together and everyone assumed the Golden Knights would still be a fledgeling franchise trying to find their footing, but given the run they've been on (Stanley Cup Finals, upset in 1st round of playoffs, Western Conference finals, Stanley Cup semifinals) it doesn't make much sense anymore. I assume this will be significant competitive advantage for Vegas with most every other team losing at least one marginally useful player.

Maybe. Maybe not. Vegas also isn't getting a dime of the 650 million pot put up by Seattle to join the league. So that's 21.7 million per team, or @21 million bucks per team if Vegas were included.
I honestly wonder how many NHL teams would pay 21 million dollars to be exempt from losing a player, especially given that a good chunk of unprotected players are available due to contracts their teams hope Seattle will take.

Oh no. LaFleur seemed like he'd descended from Olympus to play hockey with the mortals. There's certain players whose excellence makes them feel eternal, and LaFleur was one of those guys for me.

There are actually quite a few of us here that are NHL fans despite the dearth of posts. Myself, I’m a Sabres/ Canes fan. But I was pleased to see the Rangers return to prominence. The NHL desperately needs more stars and dominate teams in the major markets.

Great win for them. I saw Makar play in college and I'm not surprised he's otherworldly in the pros. He tilts the ice. I'm a little bummed for Tampa Bay in that they were so close to attaining dynasty status. I was consoling myself over the Rangers' loss to the Lightning with the thought that "well, they are a dynasty." Now I don't even get that.

Not even a big hockey fan, but it broke my heart to see the Lightning come up short this season. I usually get mildly interested in the playoffs, but I bought in hard this year. This years team simply was not as fast and strong as they have been in previous seasons.....and I could argue they were not the best team on paper against the Panthers, Rangers or Avalanche, but they just displayed that heart of a champion throughout. As I said, I am no expert evaluator of ice hockey, but it is easy to see which team is faster and more explosive on the ice.....and the Avalanche was a step quicker throughout the series. Lightning fans should be as proud (if not more so) as they have been of the two previous championship squads.

I don't think anyone expected Vegas to start the season 13-2. Amazing.
