I know RTG started the other thread for selections but once the other three teams are filled we can start posting our picks on this one.

Two requests:

1. Try to put more than “With the First Overall Pick the Jacksonville Jaguars select Trevor Lawrence”. Feel free to justify your pick however you want. Include a picture, just have fun with it.

2. To keep it moving use the PM feature to let the next team know they are on the clock as a courtesy. RTG can decide how much time between picks (12 or 24 hours) or how trades are handled.

If we go two rounds we can fill the other three teams.

Enjoy.

Here comes the least surprising pick in the history of the NFL. The Jags having been searching for a QB for about 15 years. Now the most acclaimed QB in recent memory is available and the Jags have the number one pick. He's the reason Urban Meyer became the coach. They'll probably announce him as opening day starter when they turn the card in.

With the 1st pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select.

Trevor Lawrence - QB - Clemson

With the 2nd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select:

Zach Wilson, QB, BYU

With the Jets transitioning to a Kyle Shanahan-inspired West Coast offense, Zach Wilson is an ideal fit for the new offense. He slightly edges out Fields.

This is where the controversy begins:

The Niners traded up for a QB who they liked but isn’t as highly rated and bombed his pro day.

Then there is another QB who had a better pro day and ran a 4.40 to boot.

That said, with the third pick, the Niners select:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210418/1a76a399849cb00b4517142d9dca6908.jpg

Mac Jones (QB-Alabama)

Shanahan wins out and gets his new Matt Ryan for his offense and finds himself on the hot seat if it doesn’t work out.

With the 4th pick overall the Falcons shock the world and select the heir apparent for Matt Ryan:

Justin Fields, QB, The Ohio State University.

https://cdn1.thecomeback.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Justin-Fields-runs-vs-Clemson.jpg

The Falcons were planning on selecting either Pitts or Chase here but can’t believe the 9ers passed on Fields and couldn’t pass on the home-state product and he will have chance to sit behind Ryan for a season.

The top four is how I think it unfolds in real life unless the Falcons trade out.

I think Fields is the wild card. Had a better pro day than Jones but could go either way boom or bust. If any coach can make Jones work it’s Shanahan and outside of a few mocks I’ve seen Jones as the pick over Fields.

If I was making the pick for myself I’d have taken Fields. I’m going by what I think the 9ers are going to do.

With the 5th pick, The Cincinnati Bengals select Ja'Marr Chase WR

If this was a real draft, not just with multi-rounds but next year's draft to consider as well, I would have traded down a few spots for Sewell.

But with a cut-and-dry 1 or 2 round draft like this one, Chase is on the case.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210418/6c201bc63f0665c55b1ebd898af649cc.jpg

Sewell could be an option here as could Smith or Waddle but Pitts is the best pass catcher available regardless of position.

When President of Football Operations John Elway brought in George Paton to interview for his old position of General Manager, all thoughts of anyone else getting the job ended quickly that day. With Paton's history of building solid Defenses whereever he's been, that success lines up perfectly with Elway's philosophy.

So, to begin their building of a Super Bowl winning Defense, the Denver Broncos select with the #9 pick of the 2021 draft the best tackling prospect and best coverage prospect in Penn State's Micah Parsons. Pat Mahomes and Justin Herbert beware.

I am not enamored with the EDGE class (at least at 11) and since neither Slater nor Sewell made it this far I went with Smith because I think he is special and getting Jones more weapons, even after signing Golladay, is beneficial.

CHRISTIAN DARRISAW, VIRGINIA TECH

Darrisaw earned the highest PFF grade of any offensive tackle in the Power 5 in 2020 — there wasn’t a single blip on his radar from start to finish. He’s such a powerful 315-pounder and allowed all of six pressures over the entire season. More importantly, he didn’t allow a single sack or hit.

The Washington Football team with pick #19 select Najee Harris RB, Alabama

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/najee-harris/32004841-5249-3163-f8f5-73c55f8a5c0d

Overview
Plus-sized runner who elevated his game and draft stock with a well-rounded performance in 2020. Harris showed improved short-area creativity and elusiveness to go with his trademark physicality. Creates additional yardage with both wiggle and power, but he lacks desired top gear to change games in a flash. He handled a heavier lift in 2020, with almost 300 total touches in 13 games. Harris’ value as a third-down option out of the backfield and as a personal protector should not be underestimated after his performance in his senior year. His running style could shorten his career, but he’s a tough, three-down runner who can immediately upgrade a running game.

I like Harris and do not think it is a problem taking him this early. I often see in the write ups, people pointing to all of the miles that are already on those legs....but that is not going to be an issue at 22 or even 26 years old. Maybe he wears down early by the time he reaches 30 years old, but it does not matter if you get 5 great years out of him with this pick.

From my perspective the knock is simply on the value of a RB in the first round, no matter how good they are. And the lack of success of recent top 10 Rb picks has contributed to that. You have to go back to 2016 and Zeke Elliott to find a RB worth a high pick. And even he has not won a championship.
A lot of organizations ate trying to build a strong OL, and then plug in a cheap RB.

I get why some people have problems with Barkley @ #2....but I doubt anyone would have an issue with Barkley @ #11? #15? He is rare, but when healthy, he can be a game changer and add wins to the column. He can impact a game as much as any position outside the QB because he is just that gifted. If you look at that draft for example, Barkley was taken @ #2 and the next RB was not taken until Rashaad Penny @ #27 and Sony Michel @ #31. Even @ #2, I think NY would have got more value with their pick than Seattle and New England in that draft with their 1st Round pick if not for Barkley's injury last season.

With the 20th pick in the 2021 Redszone NFL mock draft the Chicago Bears select Davis Mills, Qb, Stanford.

They picked up Andy Dalton during the offseason when they couldn’t get Wilson and Watson imploded his career. The Bears select a QB with a ton of pedigree that didn’t play many snaps at Stanford but has flashed greatness at times. Could end up being the steal of the draft.

With the 26th pick the Cleveland Browns select Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah LB, NOTRE DAME, JR, 6'1" - 215 LBS

The browns have a solid roster but are lacking in athleticism at the LB and Safety positions. They were expecting to take the safety from TCU at this pick, Moerig, but cannot pass up on the freakish athleticism of Owusu-Koramoah.

This last season he won the Butkus Award while also being named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and a unanimous All-American as a senior in 2020.

With the 27th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select DE Joe Tryon.

Edge defender is the position the Ravens most need help with, and Tryon is literally at the top of the board I'm looking at. Here's the synopsis:

Joe Tryon aligned as an edge defender for the Huskies' defense. He typically will rush from an up or down position with equal effectiveness. He has excellent reactive athleticism with regards to body control and agility for a young man his size. He is a loose-hipped athlete who demonstrates fluidity when he plays on his feet. Setting the edge in the NFL will be no issue for this player. He is explosive off the edge and projects with elite upside with pro coaching. He has true schematic versatility in that he can be an outside LB in an odd front scheme or can gain weight and be a 4-3 defensive end.

Steelers- Travis Etienne, RB Clemson

In reality, I'd be looking to trade down after Rijo took my guy. But Pittsburgh has zero acceptable RB, so we'll go with plan C.

I’ve seen Etienne or Najee Harris mocked to the Steelers recently but I’m really thinking it’ll be someone on defense.

Caleb Farley seems like a Steelers pick as does Ojulari if he falls.

Their track record picking Corners in the first round kind of stinks. I'm still trying to get the stench of Artie Burns out of my brain. That being said, I would still grab Farley if he slides as predicted. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if they grab Creed Humphrey- OC- Oklahoma. Pouncey retired, so Humphrey would be an instant starter. And there's something to be said about grabbing the best player at a position. But it looks like a pretty deep draft for offensive linemen, so we'll see.

And all THAT being said, I don't dislike Etienne. I'm not thrilled about his YPC dropping (from @8.0 previously) to 5.4 YPC, but he's got the hands and the jets to be a three-down weapon.

The Buffalo Bills walk, run, and sprint to the podium with the 30th pick of the 2021 draft:

Miami EDGE Gregory Rousseau

Perfect landing spot for a raw but talented prospect as the Bills pass rush was putrid last season and Rousseau has great burst to the QB.

Seeing what happened in the Super Bowl when the starting OL was depleted, the Chiefs address that situation by selecting Alabama OG/OT, Alex Leatherwood.

Leatherwood is a prospect that’s had experience at both guard and offensive tackle. Containing a towering and filled-out frame in many areas, he has adequate strength as a run blocker as he’s able to attach and drive defenders out of desired areas. His aggressiveness is a key ingredient to success in the run game, as he can completely overpower targets that he’s able to square up and land his body cleanly on. As a pass protector, Leatherwood has a clean pass set that’s able to gain ground up the field in order to stymie rushers that simply attack him vertically.

Wow....we did not expect the first 31 picks to play out the way they have! Some people claim the 2021 Bucs have no holes, but they clearly have links in the chain that are weaker than others. So after making many desperate late phone calls to ensure there was no breaking news we missed out on that caused him to still be on the board....the Tampa Bay Buccaneers close out the 1st Round by selecting the 2020 Jim Thorpe Award winner, Trevon Moehrig (Safety - TCU).

Raise the Flags! Fire the Cannons!

After several years of inconsistent play from the Free Safety position from multiple players, Moehrig should be able to join the Bucs defensive backfield opposite of Antoine Winfield Jr. to solidify the back of the defense for the near future. Moehrig is a big athletic prototypical free safety with ball skills and the ability to impact the run defense. Also, the Bucs did return all of their starters from last year, but did lose several key special teams players in free agency...and Moehrig was one of the best special teams defensive players in the country while @ TCU.

Yeah, anything outside of an arrest for a violent crime or a medical red flag that has been kept a secret, he will be long gone. He will be a great mid to late 1st round pick because while he may not be a generational talent @ Safety, he checks all of the boxes to hold down the position for a decade for whoever selects him. I have seen some analysis knocking his athleticism, but I do not see it on film. He may not be an outlier uber athlete, but he is clearly a solid NFL level athlete in my opinion.

Raised in the Portland, Or suburb of West Linn, son of CB Alex Molden, the Chargers get the player they wanted most out of the 2nd Round to help them with their 3-Safety Defense taking with the 48th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, the University of Washington's Elijah Molden, Secondary.

From PFF: Molden is the gold standard in the slot for this class. He earned a 90.9 coverage grade in that role in 2019 and backed it up with a mark of 86.2 this past season. While he's a little undersized to stay outside, he’s a physical tackler who has the skills to move to safety seamlessly.

From Tony Pauline:

Tough, instinctive safety with a terrific game. Quick reading and diagnosing the action, explosive, and plays with a degree of suddenness. Fast arriving on the scene, sells out to make plays, and effectively times his pass defenses. Takes proper angles, moves well laterally, and possesses a closing burst.

Stays with coverage assignments, stays on the receiver’s hip out of breaks, and possesses terrific ball skills facing the action. Does a great job leading the defense and quarterbacking the secondary. Does not bite on crossing patterns or receivers’ moves and can burst to the ball out of his plant.

The Chargers lost a couple of key players in their secondary that wasn't addressed during free agency. Molden should start by the mid-point of his rookie season.

WAS came on strong at the end of last season. They had a fantastic Free Agency haul.

Who's the QB again?

It's like the George Allen is in charge again.

Um...just a question...

Are we going to be doing more than one pick per day? At this pace, I'm just trying to figure out whether I'll need to post a pick for the Steelers or prepare my next post to announce their ACTUAL 2nd round draft pick.

Because it could happen.

Ideally, people should be PM'ing the next person after they've made their pick.
