I hate these announcements....it is like BREAKING NEWS....we added this really big game to our schedule....and we will play it in 10 years from now. Not trying to be negative, but there is probably a 30%+ chance ND joins the ACC or other massive realignment causes this series to be adjusted or cancelled. I recall when WVU announced a home and home with FSU, they were still a national power....then it had to be changed to a single game kickoff classic at a neutral site when WVU joined the Big12 (I think that was the reason)...and it was scheduled for last season which of course did not happen.
My thoughts have little to do with your announcement and more just my frustration with football games scheduled so far in advance because who knows where each program will be at the time. Recently I recall fans giving UCF crap for playing Pitt, Maryland and UNC as their P5 games in years those teams were not very good....but if you look at those teams when the games were actually scheduled, it was a very different scenario. Alabama is coming to Morgantown.....in 2026!

I really don't understand what you are babbling about. You do realize that this is IU football, right? To me, this is an acknowledgement of just how far the Hoosier program has come. Besides IU and Notre Dame work pretty well together.

No reason to be rude. Yes, I understand it is an IU football thread, and I was clear that my response was to the IU announcement, but directed at all similar college football announcements. If WVU scheduled ND in 2030, they would make a huge deal about the agreement. I personally am not a fan of these games being scheduled so far in advance for any team and do not think it is needed for a couple reasons. First, college football is extremely unstable right now with all of the television contracts for the P5 conferences in preliminary discussions and will conclude within a few years. If there are a few changes, and ND clearly could be one of those changes, many of their contracts will have to be adjusted, bought out or cancelled. This could be a little safer because of the in state element and IU not being a team that could see changes in their conference situation.
The second reason is outside of a handful of teams....and maybe not even a handful, but we have no idea what position these programs will be in nearly 10 years out. For example, in 2026 Texas offers Tom Allen $15 Million a year and he leaves which results in IU struggling in football and being at the bottom of the Big10 in 2030. That same year, ND is 9-2 trying to get into the playoffs....that IU game (or fill in the blank with any team or flip the teams) will be used against them on their schedule strength.
I get it from the schools perspective....they are using it to drive up excitement and sell season tickets. I would bet anything IU sold some season tickets today because of the excitement the announcement generated. I still do not think it is necessary to schedule so far in advance for the reasons I listed because while we can project that being a very competitive game next season and even likely a couple seasons in the future, we have no idea what it will be in 2030 if it remains on the schedule. If you felt I was "babbling", I was just trying to give other situations as examples to try to ensure you knew I was not being negative about IU or trying to insult your favorite team. In basketball, most games are scheduled in a 6 month period before the season, and this past season we saw how football could be scheduled fairly quickly when needed also. I think it would be beneficial if we limited future year scheduling to maybe 4 years at the most.

Yeah, he is a local kid. WVU use to live off of Florida recruiting from the late 80's through 2010'ish....then Dana kind of abandoned it. Neal Brown has made a strong push into Florida and Georgia.....starting to show positive signs. When I was in high school in the mid 90's, Doc Holliday (WVU Assistant and later Marshall HC) had relationships with pretty much every high school in Florida and high school players knew of him, but recruiting is so much different these days. I have been seeing more and more players that WVU has offered (outside of the 5 Stars every school offers) that Indiana is chasing also. IU and Allen definitely have a lot of momentum after recent seasons...I would expect some more frequent high level recruits in the near future to make their way to IU.
Not IU related, but WVU did one of those announcements I hate today to play Tennessee @ a Neutral site to kickoff the season....in 2028. I could not help but express my opinion on why I really am not a fan of these games scheduled so far in advance....or at least my hesitancy to get excited for them. WVU fans were not having it and could not imagine this not being a big time game....which is crazy since it was just 2018 when we played Tennessee at the same site in basically the same game....we were dark horse playoff contenders and they were a dumpster fire. As expected, nobody outside WV and Tennessee gave a crap about the game on that day....but the eternal optimism of college football fans just cannot imagine it being a meaningless game a decade later.

Looking at some of the preseason rankings, IU is around #20ish? I assume IU fans would rank them a bit higher? Just considering last season and who you have returning, I would have thought higher than #20. Looking at the "cumulative" preseason rankings, IU (#21) is 5th behind Ohio State (#4), Wisconsin (#14), Penn State (#18), and Iowa (#19). Is it just a case of media outlets filling in the perennial names higher?

I believe that tOSU(of course) and Iowa are for real. Penn St. not so much. We beat Wisconsin in cheese land last year with our back-up QB playing their freakin' style of game.
That being said, Covid played into last year so all bets are off for this year. I am just tickled being ranked in these preseason polls.

I certainly wouldn't turn that down.
It's hard to say based on just wins and losses how much he's discounting IU's chances against Iowa or Cincinnati's against IU. Those along with Michigan and tPSU seem to be the biggest swing games for IU this year.

Btw, I think he will be very good at the next level by his 2nd/3rd year if he is healthy. Has a level of "it" factor to him from the limited film I watched. Per him, it was a two team race, but I never thought he would go anywhere except IU. I had read some things back when WVU offered over a year ago that sources around him/IU thought he had his sights on one school. He was a 4 Star WR and only took 2 OV's....he knew where he was likely going for a while.

I'm here for the rise of Hoosier football, but let's pump the breaks. They have done nothing yet and still face a pretty daunting climb.
Ohio State is a juggernaut. We'll learn a lot about James Franklin's Penn State this year (though the QB situation is a mess). Michigan, despite the criticism, is a pretty solid program. Schiano will have Rutgers competitive in short order.
I'd imagine they'll finish between second and fifth (of seven) in the division for the foreseeable future. Allen's done incredible work, and the program seems to be on solid ground, but I actually think going from 7/8 wins a year to 10/11 wins a year is much harder than getting out of the cellar.

I'm definitely hearing some talk from the fans who's expectations are through the roof and I could definitely see some fans being disappointed in "only" 7 wins. I agree with Mr. Doran, as hard as this past climb has been, the next step's likely even tougher. The one thing Tom Allen's been able to establish that they've been missing for at least the 25 years I've been following the team and likely longer is that even if IU plateaus a little bit here, it's a safe plateau from where they were before.
Prior to Allen coming on board, it felt like every coach was coming into the program at the bottom and had to make every step a perfect one in order for IU to get to where it could consistently compete with the big boys in the division/conference. Any misstep, any failure in recruiting, any player who just didn't pan out, and IU could kiss its chances at 9-10 wins goodbye for another 2 years. At least.
Now, it feels like even if IU fails to meet expectations, this season. All is not lost. For one thing, failing to meet expectations is now 6-7 wins, not 2-3. For another thing, while this senior class has the potential to be pretty special, there's a ton of depth up and down the roster. You can really see where the talent of the recruiting classes has improved year after year after year. Plus with the ability to recruit the transfer portal, it's much easier to plug holes where needed.

I'm not particularly a fan of either program, but I'm looking forward to the Cincinnati/Indiana game next month. It's always nice to see programs who have not had as much success in the past rise up in the rankings so it's not the same teams all the time. All the better to have two of them on the field at the same time.

yes....a reason why I do not think the 247 Total Composite is that relevant anymore. Penn State already has 24 commitments, and my understanding is that WVU will not go over 19-20 in this class. I think the average score per commitment is more relevant. For example, WVU is ahead of IU....but only because we have 17 commitments and IU has 14. IU has a higher average score per commitment which in my mind suggests they have the superior recruiting class.
Not sure if you saw the news yesterday, but it looks like the NCAA is finally going to update the rules to allow teams to go over 25 limit each year to replace players that exit in the portal. That will normalize classes again as teams will likely return to classes of 22-25 high school players.
Will be interesting to see how QB Penix does. He's a talent.

yeah, I know....I was just making fun of some of the earlier reports or more like message board claims that the group would not schedule SEC teams.....like FSU is not going to play UF, Ga. Tech and UGA, Clemson and South Carolina. Refusing to schedule between the Alliance and the SEC benefits no school. Maybe Alliance members take other Alliance members calls first, but they are not ignoring SEC calls.

I expected the score to be much tighter....but I did not get to watch the game. It was on Big10 Network?
I looked at box score and while Penix numbers were really bad, it was hard to figure out how Iowa put up 34 with their very mediocre offensive production.

Honestly, I was fishing all day Saturday(and yesterday for that matter) so I have not seen the game yet. But it was on the BTN. Once I "dissect" it I am sure the conclusion will be "we suck."

To avoid "cluttering' the general college football board with endless IU football debate, I'll respond to this post here:
I get the point you are making about why that is the worst loss, however, I think Indiana clearly had the worst loss yesterday. Indiana fans and the program spent the entire offseason beating their chests, saying they were one of the best teams in the country with one of the best head coaches in the country and one of the best QBs in the country. They got complete manhandled by a likely solid Iowa team, but nothing special. Penix had a horrendous game. All of that goodwill from last season is bye-bye.
First, I wholeheartedly agree with this:

However, I take exception to the following:

I don't recall Redzoners stating anything along those lines - granted, I may have overlooked such comments - so perhaps you are referring to external comments on the matter.
I can tell you that I, for one, never allowed the expectations for this season and the program - perennial divisional challengers to OSU - to reach such an unrealistic level. Take last season, for instance: They likely lose by a greater margin (though I'm suggesting they'd have been blown out) in a 'normal' season in Columbus with a full stadium of fans. And it's highly doubtful that they win at a packed Camp Randall Stadium with Tuttle, a game manager, at QB.
Honestly - and I've mentioned this before - my realistic expectation for this program as a comp: Pat Fitzgerald's Northwestern Wildcats program. You generally go bowling every year, with an occasional shot at a high profile bowl.
And as far as the assumption of Tom Allen as an elite coach - and this is not directed at you and actually supports your point - that's a stretch. Allen's obvious strength is his ability to motivate his players (that's not in question) but IMHO, he needs quality coordinators to assist with the Xs and Os for his program to reach my aforementioned expectations for the program. The departed Kane Wommack (DC) and (OC) Kalen DeBoer, for example. The latter, a bigger loss than most realize.

Honestly, I do not really get the hire. His offenses were not good at Maryland or FSU. It has been nearly a decade since he had a good offense, and that was at Arkansas State in a much weaker version of the Sun Belt.

Then, they were down to their fourth string qb in no time. FSU was a mess in '18 from top to bottom, IIRC. And he favors up-tempo offenses. It may or may not work out, we'll see.

A little off topic, but I have a question for my Hoosier friends. The wife and I are planning a little 2 day trip to Brown Co. Indiana. We live in west-central Ohio, and it's about a 2 1/2 drive. For years I've heard a lot about this region, especially in the Fall when the leaves change, and a beautiful area to visit. I guess a lot of artists go there to paint. I guess Nashville is popular, and there's also a state park. Any info you can give me would be appreciated.

We’ve been there once for a fall visit. We stayed downtown at the Artists Colony Inn & Restaurant which was nice. Plus it was smack dab in the middle of downtown Nashville. We spent a day just walking the town going to the bazillion arts and crafts oriented stores there. There was a lot of junk but also some nice pure art things. I think there was a nighttime parade which was cool. Outside of town there are some good vineyards (we are wine people). Just google vineyards brown county.
Rooms may be harder to come by now. They get booked up fast for the fall.

He played sparingly this year as Tennessee's 3rd string QB, and he was looking at being 3rd string again this year too, hence his transfer. The Vols have a 5* guy coming in this year from California who's getting a $2mill/yr NIL deal so Jackson kinda sees the writing on the wall. If they want to hold off that guy and redshirt him, perhaps Jackson may play as a #2 but still. In limited play he looked pretty good and is athletic. Best of luck to him in Bloomington.
