Never like seeing the Reds face a LHP. Takes Naquins bat out of the lineup. Naquin a guy I never believed in. But he has made a believer out of me. Hope he keeps it up.

Brewers are throwing a lefty, so that explains why Shogo isn't playing today. But, yeah, overall I agree. He isn't playing, so why not let him go down and play?

He certainly wasn't going to play today facing a LHP. I was all for Shogo starting against RHP when he came back. But like I said above Naquin has made a believer out of me. Outside of moving one of the OFer to 1B. There is no place for Shogo to play. The OFers has carried the offence.

Hoping the lefty presents an opportunity for Suarez today.

Small sample but against LHP this year he’s 31 PAs, 3 hits, 3 walks, OPS .479.

That has to correct to some extent, he’s a career .876 OPS hitter against LHP.

It would benefit Suarez and this team if Bell would sit him down for a few days. I know the replacements aren't great. But he needs a mental break if nothing else. Ask Larkin or one of the ex Reds greats to work with him on the side. Zinter nor Bell are helping with whatever they are doing to help him.

Suarez batting cleanup is nuts. He takes strikes and strikes out on the low outside pitch. He looks like the dumbest hitter in MLB.

It is odd that Suarez still has the most games played and PAs on the Reds. He’s played quite a bit for someone hitting in the .150’s.

But to be fair to Bell, et al, Reds have had many infield injuries.

So a fan threw Urias' HR back on the field. Winker gets it and tosses it back in the stands.
Kind of makes me think.. What's the point in throwing a HR ball back now? I know when it first started, the guy would be cheered for doing it.
But now? It's played out, no applause.
And it must be annoying for the outfielder to chase the ball down and dispose of it..
What do you guys think? Still fun or not to toss the opposition's HR back on the field?

his ERA is around 4, peripherals not very good.

Bell has a tough call here though. Sims went yesterday. It was only the 7th inning. Probably wants to save Antone for a fireman situation.

I think these guys walk a lot of hitters because of the joke of a park this continues to be. Fly balls that are outs elsewhere. Go out here. They refuse to do anything to expand the park in the areas where they could. So they need to give psychology tests to pitchers before they allow them to pitch here.

He's a reliever. You want to blame someone? Blame Bob Castellini for refusing to add bullpen help in free agency, making it impossible to put him in the rotation right now.

When you might need Antone to go 2+ innings tomorrow (after 1 2/3 last night), you don't waste him in a game today when you're trailing. The fact that the Reds were looking at Hader in the 9th made that the easiest decision in the world.

If some of you were the Reds manager, Antone's arm would fall off.

Hendrix did his job and gave them a chance.

Only saw the highlights of this one but that play by Blandino at 1B that put the Brewers ahead is tough to swallow, hard hit for sure but you figure an actual 1B makes that play the majority of the time. Not really his fault, he shouldn't be the Reds starting first baseman.

Suarez continues to just be killing the offense. Like it's honestly at the point where a random AAA guy could out produce him right now.

Fine. Today with Hader it was probably useless. The Giant game it was not. Not expecting Antone to get pitch every other day or until his arm falls off. I guess when the Reds get regular leads again we will see how he is used then. He has to pitch at least 2 days in a row at some point and maybe for 2 innings in one of them.
He has less games and innings pitched then Fullmer and Romano had going into this game.

Sure I blame Bob. In fact I will bet he’s already got the excuse in his head that due to injuries this team is better then they are and there is no need to trade anyone. Unless someone pushes back and actually speaks over him he will still be worried about trading players people like.

He did, last weekend.

He has less games and innings pitched then Fullmer and Romano had going into this game.

So what? Suter, Feyereisen, and Rasmussen all had more IP than Hader coming into the game for the Brewers. It's about being as efficient as possible, which is even more important for a team like the Reds that has one reliable arm in its bullpen right now.

The Reds are 12-2 when Antone pitches. With Hader, the Brewers are 14-2. That's called using your best guys wisely.

When Fulmer pitches they're 5-15. Romano? 4-10. Romano and Fulmer are guys you have on the roster to eat innings and/or hope the offense busts out to take the lead from behind. When they run out of gas, you send them away and bring fresh arms in.

Except Fullmer was being used more in high leverage situations. At least they figured out quickly that wasn’t going to work.

I think he should be a starter anyways. He can’t throw enough innings in the bullpen to me anyways since he can’t go enough times in the pen to ever be happy with his usage. If you can’t make some exceptions for being down 1 run in the last inning when he is getting barely any work at all you’re going to have a rusty reliever.

Coopdaddy67
05-22-2021, 09:27 PM
Except Fullmer was being used more in high leverage situations. At least they figured out quickly that wasn’t going to work.

Go look at his game logs. He pitched one 9th inning when they were down a run (the one you keep complaining about) because they didn't want to waste Antone and the only other realistic option available was Doolittle. Everybody else had already pitched or threw 30ish pitches the day before.

Even in April when his results were fine he was either pitching middle innings or clean up duty.

I'm fine with thinking Antone should be a starter. He should be, but it isn't possible right now. He's the only guy Bell has that he knows has a good shot of locking up a win if they're tied or have a lead late.
