Same as last night sans Hoffman. Hopefully Hoffman can go 5 give up 3 runs or less. To me that is about as good as you can expect from him. Anything better would be icing. Need to reel off 7 or 8 and get back in this thing. Cubs up next they been playing well. Time for them to lose some.

I just noticed night game again tomorrow in DC. Then day game as always on Friday in Wrigley. You would have thought the nationals would have allowed for a day game tomorrow. That is usual procedure. I would like to see Tucker play 1b when Tyler catches. Provided they are facing a RHP. Guess they wanna give Tucker plenty of rest. Tucker over Blandino to me is a no brainer.

With the way Tucker has been playing, and considering he's a catcher, I really don't want him to play much more than he is now. He's already on pace to get 448 plate appearances this year, which would be the second most in his career.

The Nats usually play 4 pm games when they fall like this. They did in the past anyway. I guess they aren't doing that any longer.

Is ANY manager minors to majors putting the worst hitter in the league at #1 (because he will heat up any day now). No other Red has more plate appearances this year than Suarez.

Just freakin bat him #9 if you have no other option to play the field Tinker Bell must be giving Duh-sty a lesson on getting a guy 'warm'.

Bell must really hate Shogo. He should be batting 1st as he was starting to hit and would make it 2 run homers for either Winker or Castellanos rather than solo shots. And Naquin is coming back to earth.

Wouldn't be the first time that a manager falls in love with one player and seems to forget another player exists.

I get starting Naquin more than Shogo at this point, but Shogo is barely being used at all.

TexasRedsFan

With Votto and Moose still out and other starters being either unreliable (cough, Suarez, cough) or just in for defense, Bell probably believes he needs Naquin's power potential in the lineup right now at the expense of Shogo.

I understand why you bunt even with an out, to move them up and avoid the DP. I just don't think it makes sense with an almost automatic out coming up. To me it would seem having two bad hitters swing is better odds than having one bad hitter swing, even with the DP chance.

Still, all these garage sale reclamations were doomed to end up in the same place. DeLeon, Fulmer, Hoffman, Cionel Perez, Bedrosian, etc. Hembree will be there eventually, as will Felix & Brach. Hyper-spin driveline doesn’t know something these orgs didn’t when they flew them up the flagpole.

Maybe but I find it interesting his BB/9 right now is way higher than it was even in Colorado. So I don't know if it's that he's scared but rather that his mechanical consistency isn't there, because at other times (which are becoming more rare) he looks pretty good.

I could live with starts like his last one where he slogged and was a bit of a WHIP monster but only bent and didn't break. Obviously starts like this one are disastrous.

It may be an incorrect theory, but there is an undeniable nexus between a pitcher and a pitching coach. Otherwise there’s no point in having them.

Johnson may indeed be without fault, but it’s not a “dumb” topic to explore.

I think it is.

The suggestion is that a great pitching coach can turn turds into studs.

If that was anywhere close to being true, such a pitching coach would be the highest paid man in baseball.

I'm willing to keep Hoffman around and see what he has - he's cheap and controllable - but I agree that he really doesn't cream my twinkie at this point. He's throwing an average FB (~94 mph) 55% of the time, with a selection of off-speed stuff (SL, CB, CH) that he throws at roughly equal intervals. Nothing he throws is plus, and his fastball command is average at best. His stuff isn't good enough to generate swings-and-misses out of the zone, and he can be wild in the zone with the fastball and change - which makes him susceptible to getting barreled. That, in combination with the fact that he's already walked the world by the time we get to that point... doesn't bode well. His stuff can play (as a #4-type starter) if he commands better. TBH, though, his repertoire reminds me a bit of Lucas Sims's when he was starting. Maybe send him to Louisville to prep as a short reliever,. If he can squeeze 96-97 out of his FB in short bursts (Like Sims), and learn to command a bit better - he could be a decent reliever.

I mean... the guy was a flyer we got for Robert Stephenson. It's not like we're invested in him as a long-term cog in the rotation. Let's squeeze some value out of him that doesn't involve him walking 15 Nationals...

Since DJ was hired every time the reds traded for or picked up a turd many reds fans said “DJ is a pitching whisperer. He has a high spin rate, DJ must see something in him.”

I’ve simply been asking recently: perhaps that is not the case, and we have also seen Luis Castillo go from being one of the best pitchers in the NL to the literal worst under his watch. I simply would like to know why DJ is getting a pass.

I think Castillo is either tipping his pitches or he's just too predictable. He's never has next-level command. He misses inside the zone all the time. Always has. His ability to change speeds and cut his fastball at high velocity has allowed him to succeed despite mediocre command, but now that's come crashing down. I think he needs to develop his slider and use it early and often to keep guys off his fastball. Set up the FB/CH combo by generating early strikes with the slider.

As for Johnson... I'm pleased with his overall results to this point. It's not like we have a stable of high-priced FA starters who are stumbling. I think he's done a nice job with Gray, Mahle, and Miley and is solid in whatever capacity a pitching coach can be.

I am not sure what point they switched over.. But this suspended game thing .. where they just continue where they left off, seems to be the norm now.
I can't even remember when the last time they wiped out a game and started over was.. I Remember, years ago, they would just "call" the game before 9 innings and declare a winner, but that's been a long time too.. Marty used to always say stuff like "well, at least the game is now official" when rain was threatening.. but even most of those, I don't remember many actually being called (since I was a kid).

Does Bell know he can make a pitching change without making it a double switch?

Yes but the Reds need at least 5 runs now with just 3 innings to go. Stephenson made the last out so it makes sense to move the pitchers spot in the batting order as far away as possible

Taking out Stephenson's bat for Schrock. Just insanity. Not going to matter though 5-0 now.

Time to roll this one over and go for the rubber game.

9 outs left, down 5, yeah, let's bunt.

That looks like a nice park in DC. I was by it once but never saw a game there.

Only as long as it's not replaced with the "I hope dinosaurs like salmon" Buick (or whatever) commercial.

Its so cool how Farmer is quickly rising the ranks of most PAs for the Reds this season behind Winker/Castellanos/Suarez.

It's nice. Definitely recommend it, if you get a chance.

It's a nice park - however if you to a game that is in the day or when the sun is still up, check the seat location. It can be awful in direct sunlight in the summer.

Nice AB by India

The results aren't quite there but I feel like India's PAs are looking good these days, he's got a pretty good idea up there. Just needs to barrel some more balls.

Maybe the Reds could invest in a weather machine that could create huge thunderstorms any time they want to suspend a game because they're facing a good starter.

Well, that's mostly any starter they face.

On the other hand, they could finally win the Rainey trade with a six-spot here.

Its so cool how Farmer is quickly rising the ranks of most PAs for the Reds this season behind Winker/Castellanos/Suarez.

In 1989, Luis Quiñones was fourth on the club in PA's -- behind Todd Benzinger, Eric Davis and Paul O'Neill.

In 1993, Jeff Branson was sixth on the club in PA's -- behind Chris Sabo, Reggie Sanders, Joe Oliver, Barry Larkin, and Hal Morris.
(Larkin had only 28 more PA's than Branson, and Morris had only nine more.)

Injuries are a bear to deal with.
