Sincere question - what is wrong with Bell’s brain sitting Lopez the day after a 4 hit night?

Is there any clearer indication you can send to your players that performance doesn’t matter than sitting a guy who does that for a dude hitting in the .100s? What does a guy have to do to earn a start at that point?

Absolutely incredible he is sitting Lopez after a 4 hit night. A child would have given him the start tonight. Can’t imagine how demoralizing that is for a young player.

Bell: “good job rook on the 4 hits last night. Some players go their entire career without getting 4 hits in a 9 inning game. Wow. Impressive.”

Lopez: “thanks coach! I’ll continue to give you everything I got!”

Bell: “Great. Take a seat for this veteran that is literally the worst hitter in Major League Baseball”

Lopez: “uhhh ohhhh k?”

Votto has been looking good at the plate a good bit…..I want him knocking in some runs if given the chance tonight and he’s earned it, but I like Naquin up with RISP. I don’t care who knocks them in but it’s part of getting the W

I suggest Suarez go oppo if that’s where the hot table pitch is….our best hitters all do it

I wouldn't want him in CF then. The defense is bad enough as is. I would still trade Naquin if he could fetch a reliever. Not going to get a lock down reliever for him but team needing a OF with surplus relievers could work. Aquino could play regularly and would make up for Naquins power. Have to address the pen and I don't wanna see them give up prospects.

Geno is basically league average defensively at 3B this year.

Anyway, if you want to argue that Lopez should be the Reds starting 3B over Suarez, you have a good argument. But it shouldn’t be based on one game, especially a game where he made numerous base running mistakes and a big fielding error.

Why are you mad?

It all counts. I love the kid and want him in there as Suarez is being stubborn IMO. The error was bad….very bad. The base running is noted with me…maybe you don’t care but getting picked off when you aren’t going anywhere is 1, not knowing where the fielders were located and not getting a good break at all on an obvious blooper is 2 and not picking up 3rd base coach on the wayward throw to first is 3

Now I see that all the time with this team but it ticks me off every time.

He had 4 hits and I love his quick and compact swing where not a lot can go wrong. Willing to hit it where it is pitched. I like this kid!

And I would’ve bet any amount if money Suarez was playing today.

Maybe not, I get it, but it honestly should. If they’re serious about winning, Geno has been bad long enough where you basically should be riding the hot hand and right now that’s Lopez. Assuming the idea was always a two game blow for Suarez, I'd have given serious consideration to giving India a breather for Lopez. Still though, it's just hard for me to get too worked up about this particular instance. People used to blow their gasket over Dusty sitting guys too. Wonder why 3 man booth? I thought that was just opening day.

I don't know. Normally I don't like a three-man booth, but I think it could work here. Adding Welsh could stabilize the booth, which I think has been uneven at times this year. I have liked Chris Welsh as a color commentator for years -- he is very knowledgeable, especially about pitching. He also has embraced the intellectual part of the game, and has a professorial demeanor. But the Reds haven't had a commentator who could talk about a hitter's perspective since Gordy Coleman died. Barry Larkin could bring that to the table, and he much more eloquent than Gordy ever was.

I don't know. Normally I don't like a three-man booth, but I think it could work here. Adding Welsh could stabilize the booth, which I think has been uneven at times this year. I have liked Chris Welsh as a color commentator for years -- he is very knowledgeable, especially about pitching. But the Reds haven't had a commentator who could talk about a hitter's perspective since Gordy Coleman died. Barry Larkin could bring that to the table, and he much more eloquent than Gordy ever was.

Sadak: play-by-play
Welsh: color commentary, focusing on pitching and the intellectual part of the game
Larkin: color commentary, focusing on hitting and defense from a position player's perspective

I agree. It also seems like Larkin doesn’t feel the need to fill up every silent moment quite as bad with Welsh around.

Agreed.

I’ll be all for this arrangement if it means more Welsh. I love Barry Larkin to death but it’s been hard for me to get used to him as a commentator. That was probably amplified by the fact that I was missing the familiarity of hearing Chris do his thing. For some reasons the games just aren’t the same when he’s not there. Cowboy is good too, but I’m Team Welsh through and through.

He has honestly evolved into one of the premier color analysts in baseball over the last two decades in my opinion.

I mean to me that’s an understatement, I’m 30 and the guy has been one of the best for as long as I’ve followed baseball tbh

Absolutely. There were years and years where he was the only reason worth listening to the broadcasts.

So good at his craft.

Good play Suarez.

India slipped on the previous play. He was losing his footing when he missed the catch.

Cowboy probably really is the second best guy they’ve got behind Welsh, never understood the hate for him even with all the ice cream and BBQ talk (which I don’t hate either tbh)

His play-by-play during the innings Marty took off was pretty awful. He has improved, but PBP still isn't (and never will be) his strong suit. Thrall is an excellent young PBP man, and they seem to work well together. Brantley has sort of taken him under his wing. I still think that the radio booth would be best served if they no longer had scheduled "off innings". They can cover for each other someone needs a break, but "all hands on deck" under normal circumstances.
