Glad they could end something fans really enjoyed.

It happens everywhere, but this refusal of traditional powers to play good local teams in home-and-homes or at independent sites takes a lot of the fun out of college sports.

I posted my thoughts on this on a Hoosier board but I felt the "Crossroads Classic" could have been so much better. They should have set it up like Maui or the other 8 team, 3-day tournaments. IU, Purdue, Butler, Notre Dame and adding Ball State, Valpo, Indiana St., and Evansville. Hoosier Hysteria at it's finest. But nobody listens to me.

It's all about protecting the brand. The Hoosiers can't be exposed to the likes of Ball State and Indiana State.

The logic that the dominant teams have nothing to gain by playing good local/regional competition is so wrong-headed. It's one of my least favorite trends in college sports. Give the fans what they want. Build local/regional rivalries. Battle for city bragging rights. It's fun!

That the Crossroads Classic, as limited as it was, is a rarity in college sports says it all about where things are currently. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Chris Holtmann was the catalyst. He's talked about making similar arrangements in Ohio and has already agreed to have Ohio State play other good programs in the state.

Didn't he? I only know what it was when I was in school. The years I was there they played the following in the Indiana Classic(Bloomington) ; Santa Clara, Louisiana Tech, UW-Green Bay, South Alabama, Bowling Green(Dakich?), Boise State, Buffalo, and Indiana State.
In the Hoosier Classic(Market Square Arena) they played; Valpo, Colgate, Western Michigan, Missouri State(Alford?), Ball State, Drake, Holy Cross, and Canisius.
There were certainly some teams who turned out to be decent in there. But it's still much closer to who's that than a who's who.

*Apologies if I mixed up which was the Hoosier Classic and which was the Indiana Classic. One of them was in Bloomington the first or second weekend of December. The other was in Indianapolis between Christmas and New Year's.

Irony at it's finest...

You said that and went back to '83 as I attended both the Indiana Classic and the Hoosier Classic.

The Indiana Classic(Bloomington) consisted of:

IU(22-9 NCAA lost in the EE)

Utah St.(19-11 lost 1st Rd NIT)

Texas A&M(16-14 lost in CT final to #8 Arkansas)

Illinois St.(23-8 NCAA lost 2nd Rd to #4 DePaul)

The Hoosier Classic(Indy) consisted of:

IU(22-9 NCAA lost in the EE)

#12 Boston College(lost 2nd Rd NIT)

Iowa State(lost 1st Rd NIT)

Ball State(9-18)

One thing I recall Knight was good at was manipulating the early RPI system.
I'm not sure if it was even intentional or not, but when I was there at least(96-00) he seemed to have a knack for playing the best teams from the worst conferences for the guarantee games. You bring in the worst team in the MEAC or MAAAC or Patriot leage and they're probably ranked in the 300's(high 200's then when there were fewer teams) but if you play the best team in that conference? You should still win 99% of the time, but that team is ranked low 200's high 100's.

Now the tournament committee doesn't look at any given ranking number the way they once did,(rightfully so I might add) but I still find it interesting how ahead of things he could be.

Ya know, I had never given that much thought but you are on to something there. But you are also talking years when IU basketball was falling off the map. After '94 things got ugly.

Kenya Hunter has landed two out-of-state national top-30 players in about six months. I’m sure Woodson has helped close, but Kenya is getting it done.

The Woodson era tips off tonight at 6 against Eastern Michigan. Go Hoosiers!Anxious moments last night, but at least they held on for the win. Still - and I realize that it was the opening game - the looming issues of poor 3 point marksmanship and bricking free throws seem quite alarming, and it may come down to actually being on the receiving end of fortunate breaks for a change.

IMHO, should even half of the breaks go 'our' way, which wasn't the case at all during the Miller era, the Hoosiers should return to NCAA tournament play. That's a start.

Things were going according to plan until about 15 minutes to go. 21 point lead and then the bottom fell out. Archie ball reared it's ugly head.

And I think IU fans better get used to the opponents fouling down the stretch until the Hoosiers prove they can make them. And personally I don't think we have anybody that can be a consistent 3-pt. threat. I hope I am wrong and that someone will develop.

But a NCAAT birth is what most fans are after and I think we will easily get that.

I don't know about easily, but I do think they should make the field. I think we have a couple ugly losses early as Woody has a lot of coaching to do. If the new guys don't turn out to be better shooters than what we had last year, we aren't going to get much better results. TJD can only do so much in the post. If he hasn't developed some sort of jumper other teams are just going to pack it in on him. It's for sure gonna be an interesting season. I'm a believer in Woodson tho!

It was just the 1st game under a new regime. So it is best to see how they fare the next game. If the 3-pt shooting woes continue I suspect that Woody might be forced insert Leal into the line-up in some shape or form. It is also worth noting that Lander is also still on the bench.

One thing that will help the overall free throw percentage is if Johnson can be a decent free throw shooter. Last year they had Al who was a good FT shooter but I never felt like Al really scared teams as a penetrator so he couldn't force fouls the way hopefully Johnson and Bates can.

Woody has regained a home field advantage for the Hoosiers - the test is now if they can win a few games on the road. Yesterday's performance against Minnesota was good, but they need to be consistent in trying to get the ball inside to the two big guys and let them distribute the ball when they can't get to the basket - the 3 pointers they were successful with yesterday were largely on the inside-out game.

It's great to see the home court advantage back. I think if they can lose no more than 2 at home, then win 2-4 on the road, they should be pretty good as far as making the tourney. I think they have a good shot and winning at least one of these next 2 that are on the road. I think both could be winnable if they play like they have recently.

Make no mistake: I'm a strong proponent of Instant Replay.

But I think there are limitations on what you review. If you say the ball was out of bounds to one team, you can check to make sure you got the right team, but you can't just randomly decide "Oh, the ball was never out of bounds. Ooops. We'll randomly give the ball to whoever we feel like."

I know all the rules for baseball, but is there a provision for playing a game under protest? If so, IU should be finishing this game that way.

If I recall, one of the announcers even mentioned that he'd never seen that type of play reviewed. I agree that this shouldn't have been reviewed. Once that can of worms is opened, there's no getting them back in. I'm sure Wisconsin fans loved it tho.

12. Indiana
Last time: NR

When Trayce Jackson-Davis came to Indiana as a freshman, most people thought he would stay just one or two years. On May 20, Jackson-Davis decided to withdraw from the draft and return to Bloomington for his senior season. That means Indiana will return four starters from the team that won its NCAA Tournament First Four game over Wyoming before losing to Saint Mary’s. Mike Woodson is also bringing in three freshmen who were ranked in the top 100 in the 247Sports Composite — 6-5 guard Jalen Hood-Schifino, 6-8 forward Malik Reneau and 6-8 forward Kaleb Banks.
