I've been impressed this week-end. The Reds bounced back and are taking care of business. I hope some BP help comes soon because they only have two guys I don't despise out there and those guys are more like depth options not mainstays. The rest of the team deserves the added help.

Neither Lopez nor Freeman is primarily a third baseman, but Freeman plays shortstop and probably has better defensive chops.

Other than a 25 inning stretch last year, which is a really small sample, he's basically been Jeff Hoffman. A starter who couldn't hack it and a multi time failure in the bullpen as a big leaguer. His ERA this year is over 5. I'd rather have him than Garcia or Hendrix, so from that standpoint he's an improvement, but I'm not expecting him to be a go to guy in close games. From all I have seen, his 2021 is similar to his non-2020 career and now he has an injury history in his shoulder. 2020 was an outlier until proven otherwise IMO.

Schrock’s career OPS in AAA is .682… if we’re arguing over whether to start Mike Freeman, Max Schrock, or Alejo Lopez at 3B when our .165 hitting regular needs a rest, perhaps we should take that as an indication that we should add 3B to our trade deadline wish list.

Unrelated topic: former Reds great Travis Jankowski is having a nice year in Philly. Good for him.

Put me down as someone who also doesn’t understand why Lopez essentially can’t get a start to save his life. There’s basically zero good reason to start Freeman or Schrock either one over him at this point. At least Lopez has the element of the unknown and might have actual upside, and has been hitting well this season in AAA. :dunno:

Actually, I’ve been preoccupied the last few weeks to pay attention, but has he even gotten a start once since his 4 hit game? Bell’s obsession with starting certain total scrubs constantly and burying other guys at the end of the bench to rot is so irritating.

Sims is a high E-F guy this year. His ERA is over 5 but his FIP is 3.44. Those gaps often close over a larger sample. Castillo had the same issue and the gap has closed (ERA approaching the good FIP).

Of course, Lucas this year is a fly ball pitcher with walks, but his K rate is almost 14, his pitching BABIP is high, and his park adjusted SIERA is one of the best on the team.

I realize this sounds like a lot of numbers, but Sims is a serious reliever, much more so than his ERA would indicate. Agree that the injury raises questions going forward.

On July 23 Freddy Peralta was pulled after just four innings with Adrian Houser coming in to relieve him. This is evidently will be a regular occurrence going forward. "I think we'll probably split up a start again, still kind of working through an exact day on it, but we'll do it again," Counsell stated. The Brewers manager went on to say that the tandem would not be with Freddy Peralta, but that to expect this moving forward in order to improve recovery time for Milwaukee pitchers.
