Very discouraging as the Reds have been good at pounding the bad teams. This series the Cubs have nothing to play for, the Reds have everything to play for....and the Reds are infinitely more talented than this Cubs team on the field that came in on a 12 game slide. Yet going to lose the series. Dang. Gonna have to look inside and get angry that this happened and go on a winning streak.

I really don't understand how a club can have such a poor approach at the plate in such a crucial game. You don't need homeruns, you need baserunners. Swinging at balls in the dirt, taking pitches down broadway. Where does the blame come from? The lineup was put together poorly yet again, so there's that. But, is the rest on hitting coach House? Is it a chemistry thing? Adding these guys off the DL. Has that caused other players to feel pressure and start pressing at the plate? Is it Bell? The talent is there. Good, not great, starting pitching. Okay to good bullpen. Lots of power. Maybe their record is what they are.

This seems like a blip. Let’s see how it goes against MIA. That said, the Cubs roster is sub-Pirates-level right now. I mean… these guys are playing for jobs - I get that. But thoroughly dominated by a staff that came in giving up like 8 runs/game.

Key pieces of this team just haven’t shown up this season. Moose, Suarez and Garrett. Then Castillo was MIA for the first two months. Thank goodness Naquin, Farmer, India, Stephenson and Vlad have exceeded expectations.

I go back to the 11 game losing streak heading into this series. Even bad teams rarely have losing streaks of more than a dozen. Ortega has killed RHP and there 1b is on fire. And of course Happ owns the Reds. Losing 2 of 3 stings though. I get not sweeping them. But you really need to win the series.

Even the worst MLB teams manage to win 60 games and even the best teams usually lose at least 60. It's a long season and slumps and losses are gonna happen. Possible they let up and lost a little focus after Monday's blowout.

I just hope they can sweep the Marlins to help make up for this poor showing.

The biggest factor in this series is not having Winker in the lineup. If he's in there, I think they sweep easily. With Moose also terribly slumping, we are very weak from the left side.

Just play Shogo in CF and Naquin in left. None of these OFers are going to hit. Might as well go for defense. Aquino can play LF v. Lefties - I think Shogo hits them reasonable well.

IMO, a way around that is keep Shogo in for the early innings, for defense. This would allow the pitchers to get into their groove. If the offense doesn't score some runs by the 6th inning or so, then you take out Shogo and slide Naquin to CF. Slide Castellanos to LF and insert Aquino into RF. This keeps the bat out of Aquino's arms for most of the game, and allows Shogo to keep the game close with his defense. I don't think you want a bench of Moose and Shogo, with Launch Angle Barnhart your only option.

NO MORE SHOGO,put Farmer(not an outfielder) but would be better than either Aquino OR SHOGO , Farmer has been one of the Reds better hitters, has EARNED a spot, Put him at third and Barrero to short. Moose and Suarez stinking up the place but at least Suarez may hit one out every 20 or 30 at bats. If Moose ,Shogo and Aquino are ever in the same starting lineup thats like giving the opposition 4 almost automatic outs each time through the line up.

A vast improvement would be take a more aggressive approach at the plate with 2 strikes. I get taking pitches to work the count, but when you've got strikes start hacking. If you don't swing, you're not giving yourself a chance. The team strikeout totals I posted earlier bear that out.

It can be a trap, for sure. It's easy to lose a little focus, energy, and playoff atmosphere edge that good teams play with when they are contending for postseason baseball. The Reds had all of that in Philly but lacked it the last two games against the Cubs. They really need to recapture that edge they've been playing with. Need at least three against the fish.

Hopefully the home crowds will be bigger starting Fri. Crowds are always low during weekday/night games after school takes back up. But this year should be different this team has a very good shot at being a wildcard team. I thought the crowds were pretty bad. I am 3 hours away and in bad health. If I could I would be there often.

I hope so, too. The crowds have been great at GABP this summer, for the most part. Not so much against the Cubs. The crowd energy and the Reds' energy the last two games were subpar. Hoping for a spirited, focused , winning weekend of baseball.
