Can the Reds be tied for a wc spot after tonight? These upcoming games are going to be crucial, Padres are 3-7 in their last 10 games. We all know the Padres are way better than 3-7 over their last 10 so I expect to see them go on a pretty solid run here very soon, which means we need to go on a streak ourselves in order to stay in the race or take the wc spot. Let’s go Redlegs!

Yes I agree. Even with a tough schedule you gotta figure the Padres will reel off a 6 games or more winning streak at some point.

Well, the Pads have to face the great Matt Moore tonight, so their slide continues!

Seriously, though, it's a shame Moore got hurt early in his career. He was poised to be a superstar.

I knew a guy named Matt Moore in high school (Kentucky). He was a bully. Maybe Matt's alter ego can bully the Padres tonight!

If the Reds' skipper was KeefeCato, what would you do about Moustakas? Keep running him out there to play through this 1 for 30 or whatever it is. I think he's a liability. He didn't seem to come back off the injury in very good playing shape. Maybe I'm wrong, but I let the kid play short and move Farmer to the hot corner. Or maybe let Geno get some more AB's. I feel more confident in Geno running into a few balls than I do Mike.

I open the question up to every Reds' fan on here -- what you do with Mousse? Some have said give him time to work his way back. I say back from where? His career stats are not that eye-popping ( .250 ave. , 750 OPS). He hit .285 one season years ago. Take out that one season and his career numbers are even less inspiring. I have nowhere near the baseball intellect of a David Bell or many of you fans, so what say you about Mike Moustakas? Keep in mind there are 40 games left and the Cards are one game back of us in the loss column. There has to be a sense of urgency when it comes to guys that are just seemingly lost and that have become a real liability moving forward.

Btw, sorry for the typos in the original. I typed way too fast.

Great job of situational hitting by Farmer getting that 2nd run in. Common failure in that situation is for the hitter to fool around and get 2 strikes, but he fouled the first pitch and got a good SF on the 2nd.

You play Moose. Moose can hit he is in a funk. Most hitters don't come off of long layoffs and hit right away. Just about every team in a playoff chase would play the Vet over the kid. Fans always wanna give up on the Vet when he is struggling and play the hot prospect. If the Reds were not in the race. Then yes you play the kid. But they are and the Vets are going to play. Had Barrero began the season with the Reds like India then I believe he would be the starting SS now. But they didn't deem him ready in Apr.
Best thing for Barreo would be sent back to AAA so he can play regular. Call up Lopez or Schrock for the bench.

Just take that last Reds' inning and fast forward a few weeks to Dodger Stadium. Do you want Moustakas at the dish in a tight "win or go home "game with two in scoring position and less than two outs? He's a rally killer waiting to happen.

The hope is that by that time he’s gotten back into rhythm after this slump. Obviously if he’s still doing this for another two weeks you can’t play him but for now it’s been what, maybe 50 PAs at most? He doesn’t get an endless rope but he does get more slack than that.

Definitely not a fan. I always miss the first half hour of the 6:40 starts on radio or TV, and this pretty much ends any chance of me making it to another night game. Normally for a 7:00 start, I roll into town between 6:00 and 6:30. (I can't get there any sooner.) With the new 6:40 start, it won't leave me much wiggle room for any unforeseen circumstances.

You just have to ride it out at least for a while with him. Naquin was bad after April now he is on fire again. People wanted him benched. Farmer was bad first 3 months people wanted him benched then he got hot. Most hitters are up and down during the long season. Not everybody is going to be hot all season or at the same time. You just got to hope everyone don't go cold all at once. I believe in Moose. But I believed in Geno as well and he is not going to hit at all this season.
But ride with Moose give him some time to work through this. Now if the rest of the lineup goes cold and they need offence then you look at making the switch to bench Moose. We need Moose. He has postseason exp.

Something tells me Mattingly really, really loves baseball.

The Marlins could be the Yankees or at least the Rays. Most seasons. If they held onto there talent in the past. They need to just relocate both Florida teams. That state doesn't deserve a MLB team. Look at the Rays best record in the AL and they are breaking attendance records for lowest crowds. That is sad. I feel for the few hardcore Rays fans.

Johnny Bench had a terrible year in 1971. Should we have traded him? In 1972 he was voted the MVP for the 2nd time. You never know in this game. I'm willing to give Suarez a mulligan for this season. If he starts in the remaining 38 games he's projected to have 87 rbi's. That's ok in my book. And I'm not willing to give up his power and experience just because of one bad season (I don't include 2020). I'm not a fair-weather fan and he's earned the benefit of the doubt. But look how far forward Tucker was reaching. The C has to wait for the pitch to come to him and not reach forward. I think that is the most common cause of that interference, catchers losing their discipline on not reaching forward, combined with a hitter trying to wait as long as possible to spoil a middle of the zone height pitch.

I get his thinking. But now he is trying to hold on to a win he should have EASILY had. So he better hope we finish this game off and never pull this stunt againHe pulls this crap weekly....

Yes it is not like Gray hasn't had injury trouble. 60 Games last year. All managers are trying to cut innings back when possible. You want to have Gray healthy for a playoff chance. This is 100% on Sims.

Agree, Keefe. Sure, Gray could have gone another and probably put up another zero, but a manager should be able to at least expect a pitcher to throw an inning and protect a five-run advantage. Sadly, Sims couldn't do that.

Never understood why the Reds pretty well gave away Dylan Floro to the Dodgers.

Even the paltry return from the Raisel trade, Noe Ramirez, is pitching well for the snakes. We cut him loose for nothing.

I am not scared to hear things I disagree with so I block no one. Ohio deserves no baseball because they haven't won a World Series in decades...my comment is as silly as yours except I didn't actually mean mine. Attendance isn't everything nowadays based on ease of watching games in several formats now...there are several playoff games every year that don't sell out... your claim is silly and was called out... other stuff you say I have no problem with...normally.

Many sell-outs mean marketing is not optimized! Prices should be set to what you think will sell 90% of the seats. I think pricing should be much more optimized according to opponents, standings, and more increments in seat prices in line with their relative value!

Probably because many on here called for him to be cut immediately! Watch Hembree really help the Mets!

But he pitched fairly decently. Shrug.

He didn't keep it at 5 runs, but he got 3 outs and still had a 2 run lead. Seems like too many are too skittish because the Reds have so many blown saves!

I've been on Bell for A LOT of his decisions (mostly surrounding Suarez)... but Sitting a guy who has given you 7 innings and near his pitch limit isn't one of them.... This is on Sims, but he is the kind of guy I'd want with a 5 run lead

I agree. Thought going to the BP was an easy call. Personally, I thought you pull Sims after three batters because that is what he deserved after walking the leadoff guy up 5-0. That was were the mistake was IMO. However, that means you would have had to have someone warming which I guess wasn't the case.

I wish Bell would start doing just that everytime they walk a leadoff batter and certainly if they walk two batters.

You’re free to get on Bell for taking out Gray but I’d estimate 9 out of 10 managers probably do the same thing so you’re tilting at windmills, managers just don’t leave starters like they used to.

Well call me Don Quixote and find me a horse to beat to death on because I can’t stand this type of over the top managing.
I can understand not wanting 120 pitches thrown. Even 110. But now it’s not even 90 which I realize would have been at 100 by the time the inning was over. I think 1 start where a guy can go a little over 100 pitches during a month. Save a bullpen. Might not be a bad thing to do.

Oh and. Gooooo Reds.

There's never a bad night at the ballpark but nothing beats a win no matter what the final score is.

We will need Sonny Gray in the push for the playoffs and in the postseason if we get there.

I totally understand why David Bell pulled him when he did.

The pen only threw 2 IP tonight, and I get not wanting to summon the pen if there's baserunners. They've had 7 games this month where the SP has gone 100+ pitches. It's not like Bell refuses to do it. Just didn't do it tonight.

Didnt Johnny Bench win a Gold Glove and hit .238 during his terrible year? I would take that from Geno every year!!
Most Reds fans don't know or remember this. By his own admission he was never the same hitter after the surgery.

Unknown to Reds fans, Bench was diagnosed with a lesion in his right lung during a routine physical in the 1972 season. Surgery was held off at Bench's insistence until the season ended. It was performed at Christ Hospital on December 11, 1972. The lesion wasn't malignant but it was major surgery– it lasted two hours.

Naquin's bat looks really, really good right now. He's locked in.

Yes and this is where they need Moose to be. Naquin was huge in Apr along with Winker and Castellanos. Castellanos went down Votto and Farmer stepped up.
Winker goes down Naquin steps up. Hoffman went down Vlad stepped up, Antone goes down Brach and Hembree stepped up.
Guys have picked each other up all season. What a winning team does.
Which is why they have to give Moose more time to get right. Will he? I think he will. Of course what I think means nothing and he may not hit at all. He was a huge part of those Royal postseason teams.
Now I do agree you can't wait till the end of the season for him to get going. But he needs to be given more ABs. I still think Barrero would be best in AAA playing everyday. Lopez or Schrock can fill his spot as a PH. You don't wanna let him sit on the bench and get stale. But there really isn't a starting spot for him. Had Senzel been healthy he would have took Winker's spot. But they probably wanna keep Barrero up here as Moose insurance and he needs to be up on Aug 31 to be postseason eligible. Sounds like Winker won't be back till at least Sept 1 anyway. If Barrero does stay up they do need to get him starts. At least a couple a week. Maybe you try a OF of Castellanos Barrero and a Naquin/Aquino platoon. Barrero is very athletic so I imagine with some work on the side he would do fine in either LF or CF.
