Weekly College Football Pick'ems

That's right! It's that time of year again. very much looking forward to college football.

What started out several years ago, with a bunch of B10 fans playing their weekly schedule, evolved/expanded into something much more. But I enjoy doing it.

This is done TOTALLY for our fun and amusement during those winter months and football season. It'll be the same format as last year (but always open for suggestions). And for any "newbies" that may be interested, here's how it's played ....

- two divisions (B1G and Other National Games) .... we play the entire B1G schedule, while it's ala carte in ONG (10-12 games picked, and I try to be diverse, yet selective, so that they are competitive)

- There will be a mixture of games played two ways ... 1) straight up (simply pick winner or loser), and 2) point spread.

Those games designated as "point spread" games will have the spread in bold parentheses next to the favored team forfeiting points. And I will add .5 to any point spread that is a whole number in order to avoid ties.

When you post your weekly picks, please proof-read to make sure you've made (highlighted, etc) your picks for all games. Had many situations where omissions were made. We try to be alert on here and help each other out. And when it has happened we do as best we can to let that person know (PM, etc) they missed a game. But it's still your responsibility. If you miss, it goes down as a loss.

I also, briefly, want to kind of emphasis a few things .....

We invite any and all to participate. But for my sake - because I do all the weekly tracking/posting of stats, standings, etc - please make sure the commitment is there. We've have instances every season where someone starts out the first month ... then quits. Respectfully - save me the time (LOL).

The NCAA's "scheduling" anymore, in the first week or two, is a mess with games in the middle of the work week, and then Thursday and Fridays. Those who have played before know I avoid, as best I can, middle of the week and Thursday games. Why? People work, and it puts to much pressure on them, very little time to get their picks in with games in the middle of the week.

So week #1's schedule will start Thursday (Sept 2nd) thru Saturday (Sept 4th). I will have it posted by the middle of this next week.

P.S. ... and as always. Keep an eye on me an my ciphering week-to-week. I'm 65, retired, with brain cells dying daily (lol)

Not to change the topic to COVID....but this season everyone has had a chance to get vaccinated, and although that is not a guarantee, it should really diminish disruptions. I am glad the conferences have made the consequences clear for any team that can't compete.....without the vaccination last year it was difficult to hold a team responsible for being unable to compete.

I don't care too much for the first week or two of the NCAAF as far as scheduling goes. I prefer a schedule of Friday and Saturday games. I do all my "ciphering" on Sunday, and have the next week's schedule out on Monday (early), so people have the entire week to get their picks in.

Nebraska flushed away all of their tradition when they joined the Big Ten. I know they did it for the money but still a dumb move on their part, IMO.

I'm watching this Penn State-Wisconsin game and trying to stay awake. I don't know if this is a battle of two good defenses, or two inept offenses (lol). Twice Wisconsin's down inside their 10 yd line and coughs it up ( lol).

I hear it often - it’s ok because some teams never go under center (not sure if it applies to UW) so it’s too risky to break out in a game. But you are the Damn Wisconsin Badgers - line up under center and punch it in.

Whatever the reason is - it’s just too cute and it came back to bite UW.

If this was a UK team of the past, like in the Billy Curry era, that line might right. But I don't think they are going to lose to Chattanooga at all. Clearly a line mistake. But oh well, I need the wins. :D

Good to see Oklahoma playing Nebraska. Even though this is nothing like there matchups of many years ago now. They used to play on Thanksgiving weekend every year and it was almost always for the Big Eight title. I can remember some great games they had. Oklahoma would usually win it seemed like. I think you're right Danny because this morning I've checked a few sites and they're saying TBD. I've been using that TeamRanking site for years, never had any issues.

I think here's what we need to do (cumberland) ... can you just eliminate that game from the schedule? I've already posted, but will ignore it. I think this is the quickest, and simplest, way to do it.

There's always a line for every game these days. However, you're right that a lot of the FBS vs. FCS games don't have a line until the day before or day of.

FYI, in case anyone didn't see it earier in the week. We took the Chattanooga-Kentucky game off the schedule because the point spread I posted was wrong, and they took their time coming out with one - which wouldn't give people adequate time to get their picks in.

We're all, for the most part, getting nailed in ONG (lol). Is it the point spreads or maybe some of these teams ain't as good as projected? Ohio State struggling with a last place American Conference team? Clemson got a fight from a bad Geogia Tech team. Oklahoma got by a so-so Nebraska team (imo). Notre Dame vs Purdue. I think some of these teams are due for a loss or more. PSU and MSU looking stout in the B1G. And Harbaugh may have a shot this year! ;)

I had thought they were honoring the ZIP code system.

These big name teams are just scared of losing a game and getting knocked out of the playoffs. You can't blame them. They have tremendous pressure on them to win a championship and if they lose to some middling team that knocks them out then all heck will break loose. I don't know how you can encourage teams like Bama,OSU ecte.... to play better teams. I know I won't waste my time watching Bama beat Mercer by 50 points.

No one over .500 in the ONG picks. :laugh: We all are terrible this year.

There were 16 pt spread games total this week (9 B1G 7 ONG). Only 6 teams made the point spread (won)(3 in each division). 2 teams not only didn't make the spread, but also lost the game (Minnesota, Clemson).

I don't think we'll be seeing Clemson in CFP. As the season progresses, who will the next "big school" or "regular" to the CFP who won't be going this year? I say it's Ohio State. ;)

I apologize for not catching it, but you left out the Arkansas-Georgia game.

I'd have to say, overall, we didn't do too bad this week. We're slowly getting some people inching to the .500 mark in ONG (lol).

I stopped watching OSU by halftime. Too many other games on. I was glued going back and forth between Wisconsin-Michigan, Georgia-Arkansas, and of course the Cincinnati-Notre Dame game.

So, does Rutgers almost winning last week IN Michigan, while getting absolutely destroyed by Ohio State yesterday, mean anything? lol As a Buckeye fan I may hate Michigan. But I don't let that skewer my objectivity in evaluation. That Badger-Wolverine game was almost boring. 13-10 at Half. When Wisconsin lost their QB and TE early in the 3Q, that was it. I'm just not that impressed with Michigan. They have to travel to East Lansing and then Happy Valley before they host OSU at season's end.

Enjoyed the Bearcat game immensely. Impressed not only with their defense, but with QB Ridder. 1st rounder?

I could be wrong about this but I think whoever makes these lines will purposely set a couple of lines low at times to try entice people to start gambling. Basically a sale get one to come in and look around one week and maybe hook them in. I've seen this a lot over the years. Never worked on me though. I know better than waste money on trying to win more money. :)

I think the secret may be that Nebraska just had a horrible Week 1....and that stink has not went away. Nebraska is actually not bad.....or as bad as I think the general public thinks they are right now. If they can upset Michigan, I think their secret of being ok at football will be over.

I personally, don't think Michigan is as good as the "pollsters" say. It's so hard to tell what teams are legit, even after five games have been played, because a majority of those games (schedules) are filled with cupcake games. Michigan has beaten five unranked teams that are pretty bad. Ohio State has only played one (Oregon) and lost. IMO, the fact that Rutgers gave the Wolverines a game in Michigan is more a reflection on Michigan then Rutgers. We found out Rutgers is still Rutgers the following week. So yes, it is possible for Nebraska to upset Michigan in Lincoln this week. Martinez is the whole show for Nebraska, including their leading rusher.


I think you just convinced me to take Nebraska and Rutgers. If a line looks too good to be true....usually is.

With those lines it's almost an even-up matchup. So I'll take the #9 and #11 ranked teams over unranked opponents. Though I have no problem with the Wolverines losing. ;)

Bizzaro week. Overall, we did good in ONG, while the B1G bent us all over pretty good (lol). I may be a B10 guy, but those were some boring games on yesterday in the B1G. We're at the midway point in the season. And looking at the B1G, and this year's "leaders", I'm no longer impressed with Iowa, PSU, MSU, or Michigan (lol). If OSU continues to mature, get their act together, it's theirs for the taking IMO. Week #9 will be very telling with PSU at Columbus, and Michigan in East Lansing.

I think Frost is history at Nebraska.

Enjoyed watching the Georgia-Kentucky game. The Dog's defense is for real, but Ky put up a fight.

That was a pretty screwy Saturday for the B10. How can you have a system that allows 9 OTs? LOL Earlier in the season I was thinking either PSU or Iowa. But looking at how the Buckeyes have matured and played, the losses by Iowa and Penn State, and I'm still under-whelmed by Michigan. I think the air will get a little more clearer after next Saturday as some of these ranked teams go head-to-head .... PSU @ OSU, MIchigan @ Michigan State, and Iowa @ Wisconsin.

Each week the CFP "picture" gets clearer and clearer as more are "exposed" and more shuffling and "fine tuning" goes on (lol).

Thoroughly enjoyed both the battle of Michigan and the OSU-PSU games. Pretty exciting. Had a hard time falling asleep late last night. Penn State came to play and, IMO, saved their best game of the season for last night. Ohio State has gotten better, but their youth/inexperience still shows. Especially in their secondary. Clifford is a good QB, but was playing hurt, not 100%. Yet he put up 361 yards. Of course they couldn't run the ball at all, and he had 52 ATTs too.

I can't see this young OSU defense holding up if they make it to the CFP. JMO.

cumberland and Krono did great in ONG @ 9-3. But other then that we all hovered around .500 in both conferences. It seems winning and breaking the top 10, or even the top 5, can be a curse. They can't even get the seat warm before they're dethroned. I thought Purdue woud win that game. O'Connell and Bell are the real deal. Going to be interesting as to who is going to win the West in the B10 with four teams tied at 4-2.

MSU has the worst pass defense in the B10. That's right Buckeye fans! There is a B10 pass defense worst then ours (lol). And it showed yesterday ....O'Connell (536 yds 3 Tds) and Bell (11 catches 217 yds), 594 yards total.

Next week Purdue travels to Columbus. You have the #1 passing offense (OSU) vs the #2 passing offense (Purdue). The issue may be that the Biolermakers pass defense is #3 in the B10. Ging to be interesting next Saturday, and really for the remainder of the season, for OSU who have three tough games left.

The Bearcats didn't help themselves with another lackluster game vs a bad Tulsa team. Georgia looks unstoppable IMO. A sad performance by 'Bama vs a bad LSU team too.
