Sitting Farmer against a lefty makes absolutely no sense at all. Barrero wasn’t even hitting lefties in the minors.

Not how I imagined my season ending. I will be undergoing my second Tommy John surgery tomorrow. I have full trust in Dr. Kremchek and his team to get me back even better this time. Life is bigger than one person’s career. My hope through this whole thing is to inspire others.

Bell literally never checks the reverse platoon splits. He just automatically goes righty versus lefty no matter what the actual numbers are. It’s so frustrating.

Eugenio Suarez OPS vs. LHP (This year) .516

Seems like there is a spot for Farmer in there somewhere. Maybe LF with Aquino in CF.

Tyler Naquin OPS vs LHP .602

Farmer has been banged up a lot and this is a day game after a night game. I'm guessing its more about that than anything.

I figured it was a day game/night game thing too, but even then you should plan ahead a bit for things like that. Play Barrero last night and Farmer today instead.

yeah this would only be a valid excuse if starting pitchers were announced the day of the game

And I hate to enter dead horse territory on this, but man it does not stop being frustrating too to see Suarez still getting every LHP. Maybe it’s also a day game after night game thing with Moose, but at this point I’d rather just give him the reps to get his timing and swing back and whatnot than roll Geno out there to earn himself another golden sombrero.

Its a valid question, especially considering that Naquin will be less effective today as well. Hopefully Stephenson and Aquino can offset

Bell probably trusted Farmer more against the Brewers big guns. He did get a couple of hits.

Barrero strikes out pretty often and maybe Bell felt he shouldn’t play against Burnes and Woodruff.

Agree that it’s unfortunate Farmer isn’t playing against the LHP. Looking for Barrero to come through.

Kc61
08-26-2021, 12:23 PM
I view this as a big game for Aquino.

He strikes out so much against RHP that he’s not a great choice in those games.

This is a big game against a LHP, it should be AA’s wheelhouse, so hopefully he comes through.

I think the Farmer sitting today is more of a late breaking strategy move, with the two unplanned losses this week so far has made the realization clear that the only way to make the play-offs is with the much less desired wild card spot. The Reds control their own destiny by a game and it seems very do-able. Farmer is a key part of doing it, and to better serve the long picture and to help him be as effective as possible for the duration of the season, not starting him the day game after a night game was the most prudent choice. I was thinking that with Milw strong today with lefties, and if both Farmer and India played, maybe Bell would try Barrero in CF to make it righties everywhere except 1st base.

The choice should not be Farmer of Barrero. It should be Suarez or Barrero. But either way, Barrero has been bad against LHP all minor league season. He crushes RHPs. This is just another example of Bell being a dumb dumb. Barrero should be getting regular ABs at AAA instead of whatever this is, though.

He’s only got like 300 games played in his career, debuted in 2018. I’m guessing he still has like 3-4 years of control left.

Still the Pirates are incompetent and cheap and he’s probably nearing arbitration, might be able to get him without bleeding yourself dry in a trade.

Thing is, that probably is a pretty decent factor. You take a guy who doesn’t have much experience coming off the bench and spot starting and whatnot and ask him to do that, it’s not super surprising if he struggles. If they weren’t going to start him and they needed a pinch hitter, they should’ve just brought up Schrock who’s been pretty successful at it this season.

I was beating the Barrero drum as loud as everyone a couple weeks ago but I'll admit that he ain't replacing Farmer anytime soon at SS. Farmer has picked his game up since JB was called up and the team just seems more fluid and together when he's out there. He's earned his spot and I agree with the above he's the SS until he proves otherwise. I look at it akin to Jose Iglesias a couple years ago when the Reds screwed up the position by letting him walk for nothing.

Can't believe I'm gonna say this out loud but it might be time to try those Barrero at CF reps again.

Good game by the Redlegs. I saw nothing this series to make me think the Brewers are necessarily better than the Reds. The first game was ours until "muscles "sh!t" the bed. Mahle outpitched their best. Game two was a one-run game late and the Reds had a homerun snatched away. Could have won that one. And today, as I expected it would be , was an easy win. Based on this series or, for that matter, the season series, I don't think one could conclude Milwaukee is really much better(if at all).

An opponent went outside the path in a game that I think was last week. He eluded Moose's reach, slid past 3B, then scampered back to the bag and was called safe. Moose was right in the middle of the path, so the runner had to be outside it to elude the tag. Basepath is 6' wide and Moose's arm is probably about 3' long. I explained this and the aforementioned gentleman/lady didn't buy it, no one backed me up, and of course the umps didn't call the runner out of the path even after reviewing the play to see if Moose got the tag on him in time.

Because you can go outside of the base path in this situation if it isn't completely blatant which this was not.

I didn't see the one today real well, but as I said last week, it's not an arbitrary judgment. The fielder reaches with his fully extended 3' arm from the middle of the path (e.g. Moose last week), runner eludes, he has to be outside the path and therefore out. We can't have guys running the base paths like a Benny Hill episode just to get away from a tag.

If the fielder doesn't have the ball yet, he won't try to apply the tag any way. If the fielder has the ball and the runner is approaching, the runner can try to elude the tag and avoid a collision, but he cannot go further than 3' away from the middle of the base path without being out.

I was not saying the full extension of the arm or whether the fielder is in the middle of the basepath isn't "judgment." What I was referring to was that I explained Moosse clearly checked both those boxes and still the person replied to me, "he was not outside the basepath." It seemed like the person thought the basepath itself was an arbitrary measurement. Once those boxes are checked, it's not an arbitrary judgment - that's all I am saying.

Correct they can only go three feet out of the base path that is established.( either way) IMO he wasn't three feet out of the base path that was established. You only establish a base path as the tag is being applied. It is a judgement call because they are eyeballing it. I think the only argument with you is not the rule rather if he was three feet outside of the established base path.

Ok. You're not wrong. But the umpire still has to make that split second judgment, and it sounds like the one in that game made a bad call.
