Cubs have been scoring well lately….a lot of players playing for jobs or next season.

Reds need to get back to playing well.

Votto is off today. He’ll be 38 in a few days. Not enough rest for him, Reds should have had a plan to reduce his playing time IMO.

Maybe they’ll begin now. He did miss time injured, but that’s not the same thing as regular rest for an older player.

A lot tougher Cubs team than they were right after the break. Schwindel and Wisdom have been on fire and they still have Contreras, Ortega, Happ and Heyward. They have won 6 in a row and 9 of their last 12. This team better be ready to play or it will be a repeat of the Tigers series or worse. I guarantee the Cubs are relishing a shot at knocking us out of the playoff picture. This is their defacto playoffs and they have nothing to lose...

Money is going into the Cubs as well. Line moved from about +155 Cubs to +125 Cubs now.

Wonder if it’s a coincidence Reds are facing lefties so often now.

Or did opposing managers suddenly realize that Reds can’t hit them.

I would give him about 1 day off a week. Despite his scorching streak he still has been pretty bad against LHP this year with a .655 OPS. I doubt this happens though as we don't really have a great RHB option to take his place and the fact that management has been hesitant to sit him even when he wasn't playing well. Asdrubal would be the only decent replacement for him there and he hasn't actually done much since joining the team.

I'm guessing this is Joey's last day off this year considering we have 4 days off between now and the end of the season already.

I'm not saying the Reds will win this game (with the way they've been playing, who can tell), but I'm not buying this idea that the Cubs are suddenly good again.

They just beat up on the Pirates.

Who did they play before that? The last place Twins.

Before that? They lost a series against the White Sox, a good team.

Before that? The last place Rockies.

Twins might be in last place but they have been hurt all season. They just got back Buxton and Donaldson their 2 best players. They are not the same team they were a month ago. They also just took 2 of 3 from the Brewers, TB and the White Sox. Rockies are also playing way better of late and recently took 2 of 3 from the Dodgers, swept the Padres and split with the Braves recently. Teams are in flux all season long for a variety of reason and it would behoove the Reds not to look past this Cubs team. No one said the Cubs are good but they are clearly not in the same god-awful category as the Pirates.

Cubs are terrible. But dangerous. They have a few hitters that are on fire. Playing for starting jobs or at least bench spots on next years roster. But the Reds need to win this series. Not making excuses for the Reds. They need to take the series. Time is running out.

What young guys? Barrero is in AAA. Could he help maybe, maybe not. Few if any team would put a rookie who has not been with the team since the start of the season in the lineup in a playoff race. If your talking Lopez he can't hit a ball hard. He is a 4A/fringe major leaguer Shogo part 2.
I haven't heard you call for Shogo of late. You must have finally realized what nearly everyone here tried to tell you. Shogo can't hit. Thank goodness they didn't bench or even send down Naquin like you were calling for back in June.

Meaning: Votto makes that play.
That's just the way things have been for the Reds lately, anything that can go bad, is going bad.
This is not a criticism of giving Votto a day off (he needed one) or even criticizing Caberera.. But man, the "Breaks" are few and

If the price is right, I'd welcome Happ. He's been hitting pretty good of late (granted, against not so great teams).

But needing to extend the inning, on what should have been the lead before Moose came to the plate, is on the rest of the offense, not on Gray. Gray was rolling. It's up to the rest of the offense to provide run support. Bell making changes that make my cats quietly disappear from the room.

Gray was likely only pitching one more inning, based on his previous usage. The chance to get two runs likely trumped that one more inning IMO.

Yes, but let's not get carried away with last season. It was 44 games and 139 at-bats. This year, more at-bats and worse results. I get that he's been injured and Bell has also done him NO favors by yanking him in and out of the lineup. Neither of those things are his fault, but bottom line is he's paid a ton of money to produce and this year in particular, he just hasn't. So I'm a little frustrated with him too and considering the shape he's in, I don't have high hopes that the fortunes will change much.

Reds have to make a decision on Moose and Suarez before 2022. They can't both be back next season. They'll probably have to pay most of at least one of those contracts to get something back in trade. Don't think I feel comfortable penciling in either as the regular 3rd baseman next year.

Yeah, right, this. This is what’s dumb. The guy looks more or less as he always has. He’s probably not in peak playing condition, because as you’ll recall, he literally could not walk correctly for a month or two this summer. But you act like he’s just some caveman jagoff baffoon who became a tub of lard just to spite Reds fan. It’s the same level of banana phone analysis that complained about Griffey and Dunn having recliners in the clubhouse.

And I’d be more sympathetic to these criticisms, if not for the fact that it’s obvious you have a weird bone to pick with him for some bizarre. Like I remember you recently said he was bad in 2019 because he had a .250 average, a season in which he was also an all star and had an .845 OPS.

I don’t know if you’re the kind of fan that just loses their mind the second a player starts getting paid more than chump change or what the deal is, don’t really care either, but the whole act is very grating.

Reds have to make a decision on Moose and Suarez before 2022. They can't both be back next season. They'll probably have to pay most of at least one of those contracts to get something back in trade. Don't think I feel comfortable penciling in either as the regular 3rd baseman next year.

If you don’t want to get carried away with last season, then look before that. Moose is a multi-time all star player.

Moose got hurt this year, plain and simple.

The worst thing Reds could do is overreact to an injury. Moose will get healthier.

The worst thing Reds could do is take a hit on some bad deal. He’ll get healthier.

And when he’s healthy and in the lineup, the Reds play like a completely different team. He had an OPS well over 800 in early August. The foot issue is clearly still bothering him quite a bit.

Can’t stand some of the new guys around here acting like they’ve never seen an injured player before.

The slide continues. I love the Reds, but this team is done. I hope we can just finish over .500.

This is how I see it. There are winning and losing streaks during the season. Bad time for a losing streak right now. But teams are never as good as they look during winning streaks or as bad as they look during losing streaks.
I think they turn it around. Question is will it be too late? Ii think they finish above .500. 50/50 right now on making WC.

I don’t want him next year either. I think he’s well past his “use by” date as evidenced by the physical breakdowns, the substandard production even when healthy and the price tag. His days of being a +WAR player are sadly in the rear view. Good guy, seems like a good teammate but from a purely objective standpoint he’s no longer an asset.

I’ve more or less mentally conceded the playoffs over the last few days. It’s still technically possible I guess, but they are clearly just completely melting down and I don’t see that changing when half the lineup is AAAA fodder and Suarez.

Yea, the Reds might still win the WC because SD has a hard schedule and STL and Philly are not exactly great teams, but
they really don't look like a good team now. Still time to turn it around (STL has been helping us with bullpen meltdowns),
but at some point soon, they need to start winning series.

Justin Steele singlehandedly letting the Reds back in the game by actually exploding on the mound made for a pretty epic comeback, but it fell just short as Suarez continued to flummox this team in every way possible by staying put at 2nd on a wild pitch that ended up on the campus of Northwestern.

That might possibly be the case, but even still, they’re going have him on the roster either way. Nobody is going to trade for him with his contract and his injury issues this year. They also definitely won’t DFA him. I think it’s not out of the realm they find a way to cut bait with Geno somehow. But they won’t do it with both Moose and Geno, and then also go out and use further resources on 3B.

At this point, my preference would be to find a way to get rid of Suarez, plug in Moose at 3rd and give him a chance to bounceback. Because one of those guys is definitely going to be the 3B next year, and I’d prefer it to be the guy that has shown signs of life in his bat this year instead of Geno who looks like he should be playing in low A ball.

I like Moose and want him to do well. But I'm also not going to just ignore current results. You seem to assume that because his name is still Mike Moustakas, he will definitely go back to being the same reliable bat he was before. And I'm just saying I see little reason to just automatically think that. He wouldn't be the first player to never be as effective again after injuries. What someone did in the past is completely irrelevant if they're not able to help the team NOW. I'm hoping he can start with a clean slate next year and we can see for sure because the Reds have little choice with his salary but to keep playing him.

It's hard to predict for sure.
My guess is that both Geno and Moose are not movable.. therefore , they will both be on the team next year.
That's the Reds' MO.. hold on to a struggling player with a big contract , hoping he turns it around and is tradable.
If they put the DH in the NL next year, both are likely in the lineup just about every day.

THe overreaction about Moose is simply frustration with the team’s decline. He’s a good player who got injured. Usually, they come back. Unless his injury was severe and long-lasting, he probably will too.

I tried to tell everyone here that this is still an awful team. I tried to say stop looking at how the pitching is doing and pay attention to how bad the offense is. You can’t win with only 3 guys in the lineup who could hit. I also said that the Indians would be ahead of the Reds if they played in the NL central which still holds true. Thank God college football is back so I don’t have to watch anymore of this train wreck franchise

I was singing the same tune about the Moose when the Reds were twelve games over .500. Moose didn't just get bad and out of shape when the Reds started losing. I wasn't the only one lamenting Moose's liabilities three weeks ago. We all want the average to above average Moose of six or seven years ago to reappear but , then again, I want Steve Perry & Journey to do it again just like they did in the early eighties but it ain't happening.
