He’s actually hitting .362/.389/.609 on the first pitch this season. Stephenson similarly has success with it. But when it’s not working, well, it really doesn’t work.

If not this inning then at some point he will throw 25 pitches in a inning. That is the thing they keeps him from being in the conversation as a top tier starter.

Yeah every single game he has a 20 plus pitch inning. Without fail. He could be going 7 or even 8 with a 100 pitches if he would just avoid the one inning. Then you use only two relievers instead of four.

Every one of these game threads devolves into one group of posters who make critical remarks about players (yes, oftentimes baseless) and another group of posters who criticizes the first group. Both of these factions are no stranger to hyperbole and baseless ad hominem attacks. Every night. It’s more predictable than the Reds looking lost against a junk tossing lefty.

I'd rather not come here and nitpick our very best players and complain about the smallest problems on a team with problems. Seems counter-productive. I come here to discuss the good and the bad, but sometimes with you new guys it just feels like piling on. It's depressing. Mahle is a damn good pitcher. Yeah, would certainly prefer he not just toss it right down the middle. I think what he could do is simply miss in a way to generate more swings and misses (or swings to preferred contact) but that is obviously tough against major league hitters.

He's not taxing the bullpen, not any more so than anyone else.

He's averaging 5.5 IP/GS this year, that ranks 54th in the majors out of 123 qualifiers. Only 13 starters in the entire league are averaging 6 or more. He's averaging 1 or 2 less batters than aces per start.

Right, wasn't trying to say he does, though get it read that way. But he has control problems at times and there his control problems put him behind, which lead to a tie game. In general ABs that hurt seem to be when pitchers get behind.

I’d rather have him than not. But he’s been much worse at home, absolutely does have issue with control and a team with a bullpen like ours needs starters who can consistently work into the 7th, thus minimizing our bullpen’s exposure. If we had the Brewers pen, it wouldn’t be such a big issue. We do NOT.

And now he’s tattooed by that human bucket of snot known as Yadier Molina.

Nailed it! If we had a bullpen with a traditional setup man and a traditional closer he'd be a 15-20 game winner (if, as you say, learns how to pitch better at GABP). He can't approach home games the same as those on the road. At GABP, he needs to learn to specialize in lower location with his repertoire of pitches. I just keep hoping we'll find a closer like Eric Gagne. He terrorized hitters for 3 years with the LAD.

The Reds are 17-11 in Mahle's starts this year.

Only 7 starters in the entire majors can say they have more "team" wins in their starts (Urias, Buehler, Wainwright, Scherzer, Gausman, Flexen, and DeSclafani).

Shows that he never has a lot of those awful games where he gives up 6 or so runs. Was looking at his game logs earlier today and I don't think he even had a game where he allowed more than 4 or 5 runs.

I think some of us just think he could potentially be dominant, which is kind of a fan thing I guess. Ragging on his pitch count was just kind of a running thing I thought. Didn't realize people got so defensive about it tbh. My bad.

And just like Tom said, he has settled down and should easily get through six, lol.

DeShields: 2-15 since joining CIN
Cabrera: 0-8 since joining CIN.

Probably a little worse than we expected.

Barrero: 2-13 in his ML at bats. Hopefully he’s only here until Farmer returns.

Akiyama is .199 ytd in 156 ABs.

Aquino is .195 ytd with 9 HR. 150 ABs.

I hate referencing 2020 because I consider that a throwaway year (Covid-19) but, Akiyama did smack the ball fairly well down the stretch. And he has done an above average job on defense. If I was in the FO this offseason, I'd dump Senzel, Moustakas and Aquino for superior relief pitching. Eugenio will (and has lately) come out of his funk and be a Reds force again.

If DeShields doesn't steal that is a hit for Moose.

But we have a lead, now Givens needs to finish it off

I just want the Reds to crush their enemies. See them driven before us. And to hear the lamentations of their women.

If they crushed their enemies they'd have no one to play the rest of the season. Just a bruised rib or bloody eye every series will do.

I do think in his first few seasons like all young SS with great range he will make a ton of errors. You live with that though if your the Reds.

Votto's greeting to Barrero as he entered the dugout after his hit/run - priceless (and almost bringing me to tears).

M2, do you think Conan could cut a ball in half swinging his sword or would he whiff?

“The Reds season is over”
“The Cards are going to pass them by”
“There’s no hope”

What if I told you that all we needed to do to help the Reds win is believe in them?

If he hits....

I think he will hit. Maybe not right away over a full season. But he has star written all over him. I still see why they choose to go with the veteran steady fielding SS the rest of the year though.

I totally agree. He's the SS of next year and the future... just not now.

There’s something about him that reminds me of Lindor.

Obviously that’s an incredibly high bar and not a realistic expectation. But he obviously has lots of talent.

Aquino is scary in the OF. He looks nervous catching a routine fly ball.

Agree with the first part. But Barrero just sort of Pipped Farmer. At least I hope. Not as 100% starter, but he should be here to stay and it's been made evident this fine evening.
