Interesting lineups in matchup of LHPs. Barnhart, who catches Miley, only lefty hitter other than pitcher. Votto out against Kershaw. Barrero in CF to get another RH bat in the lineup. No DeShields. Cards with Pujois against Reds’ lefty, hitting cleanup.

Must win today, hope for a Cardinals' loss, and then win three against Pittsburgh to have any reasonable hope of getting back in this thing.

Really an uphill battle now with Winker apparently gone for the season. Have to hope for the best and a miracle or three.

This is really a patchwork lineup. But you have to do those things when you have injuries and a black hole at third base.

What's up Doc? Yes, you're probably right. With the Cards on the verge of putting us four back in the loss column with 12 to go, this one today feels like a must win. A must win game against Kershaw. Daunting. Bell has to treat this one like a one game WC.

Tough to win with reds hitters having holes in their bats. Suarez actually most times swings like he doesn’t even have a bat in his hands. He broke the Mendoza line for playing a full season. For those who don’t know what the Mendoza line is he was a shortstop who played in the 70’s and his career batting average was approx. 200. Since then no one has approached his batting average until Suarez came along and actually shattered Mendozza’s record. imagine how far ahead of the Cardinals the Reds would be if Suarez even had one half of what he usually hits. I am not even going into his fielding because that has been so terrible this year. Sad sad way to end the season.
And Castillo has proven to be a dud having the most losses in the majors this year. If he even had a 500 record Reds would be ahead of the Cardinals.

I guess folks are watching football, game thread not too active. Dodgers get a Will Smith HR and go ahead 1-0. Could have been worse but a Miley pickoff.

I wonder if Wade is starting to tire this season, he’s up around his normal full season (since 2016, anyway) innings number.

Very tough trio for Reds to face this weekend, maybe they can manage a few runs coming up.

I could be wrong. But in many instances I think the Dodgers manipulate the IL with there pitchers to keep them fresh. Again not saying most don't have legitimate injuries. But they are so deep i have thought for a few years now if they have a player with the slightest of injury they IL them immediately. Keeps pitchers more fresh for postseason.

This is why I don't get some of the posters here wanting the starters going deeper in games. 60 games last year. Reds lead mlb in starters going 6 or more innings since the all star break. This could be a big factor in Miley collapse.
For a huge part of the season the Brewers even went to a 6 man rotation.

Aquino is Rolando Roomes 2.0.

19-year-old Big Klu had high hopes that the former Jamaican cricket player could become Eric Davis Lite, but he just couldn't make enough contact. Aquino is similar to Roomes in having tantalizing physical tools, but he just doesn't have the essential baseball skills.

It’s not “enough” but Reds faced a daunting task against this Dodger pitching trio.

Not sure any team has faced a tougher trio of starting pitchers.

Bad timing, but they didn’t get swept, still have an outside chance for WC, keep the pen rested for Pirates.

I did. That's why I said they needed at least two of these. When the Cardinals are given a lifeline in September, they have a history of taking advantage. They've earned their playoff spot if they get it. I hate to admit it (I mean HATE to admit it) but the Cards organization has been better than the Reds for a long time now.

Tommy Thrall mentioned that Miley has a history of running out of gas in September.

A 5.51 career ERA in September confirms that. July and August are his best months then the ERA goes up by 2 full runs in September. I'm sure Bell was aware of this which is why Miley got that long rest around the ASB, but he just can't handle a full season. Houston had to take him out of the rotation in 2019 after he was brilliant the first 5 months.

I said he's been bobbling balls all season, it's just that he recovered from most of them. Bobbling takes away the double play, and ups the chance of a bad throw, which is what happened today. I've watched A LOT of games this season. He's a utility guy. No one said he was perfect. Oh, and Barrero is getting a taste of reality in the big leagues. Bell is blowing the season. He's still seemingly playing the numbers instead of managing the talent we have game by game. Injuries happen to every team. He definitely doesn't possess any motivational skills. Earlier this month Suarez got hot and Bell then benches him. You always keep a hot bat in the lineup! When Shogo was making several dazzling plays in CF it really seemed to fire this team up. It isn't always a bat that fires a team up. Then Bell basically removes him from the lineup and the fire isn't even a smoldering ember anymore. Fire Bell and hire Paul O'Neill as manager.

I’ve watched most of the games this season. And Farmer has not been bobbling balls all season.

If he had been, how is it possible that he has only 5 errors in 930 chances at shortstop?

The Reds lost because the starting pitcher allowed 6 runs in the early innings. Enough.

Thank you! The only consistent 'bobbling' I've seen this season is from David Bell.

You can bobble balls and not have errors. He often bobbles and then has to rush the throw to first, or he goes to second and that's all they get. We'll agree to disagree, but I'm not backing down from what my own two eyes have seen. Peace.

I don't know what Paul O'Neil is like as a manager. I stopped following him when he went to the Spankees. But I remember the guy being super firey. Bell just slaps them on the butt and probably presses the heart button on all of their tweets. And Bell takes WAY TOO LONG to remove guys from the lineup, 2 batters too late, or 8 games too late if you are a batter.

Tough loss. 3-7 over the last 10 but that’s ok because we played well a few months ago!
