I’m glad the Bengals didn’t let them score at the end of regulation. That would have been a huge risk and things worked out anyway.
Second half... Mahomes 83 yards and 3 pts. Phenomenal job defense. Way to step up!

Agreed. The bias is sickening already.
They just spent 5 minutes crapping on Mahomes for “getting greedy” and “playing like he did at the beginning of the season” and “running backward like Johnny Manziel”.
Finally Chris Bernan says “Well I mean, credit the defense” but that an awfully hollow statement after you spent 5 minutes criticizing the QB and not giving any credit to the defense that’s making him look bad.

I’ve seen enough of Mahomes to realize that he is a really good QB with good awareness.
So I don’t know if the D got to him, or if he got his bell rung, but how do you take those last 2 sacks in regulation, and on the second one fumble the ball? Great D, yes, but I’ve never seen such poor decision making by a great QB in crunch time. After the first sack there needed to be awareness of the situation and protection of the ball.

And Maholmes in the second half looked very human and confused. I hadn’t ever seen that before.
Going into the half they were talking about Mahome's perfect first half (200+ yds passing, 3 TDs). I told my brother "Lets see if they can make the adjustments at halftime. They've done it before!". Second half? I think the stat was 83 yds and 3 points from Mahome.
It's not just enough to motivate your players ... but your coaching staff has to be capable enough to see what the issues were in the first half, and make the right adjustments. I was simply impressed the way this defense played in the second half. The last series in regulation, with KC on the Bengal's 4 yd line, was quite "trying" on me. What a defensive stand, with Hubbard sacking Mahomes on 3rd down, and forcing the tying FG.
That was such a pivotal play I still get chills.
Zach Taylor just locked up Head Coach of the Year, and deservedly so.

Tough matchup for sure. On the other hand, McVay the boy genius did a terrible coaching job in that game, especially the way he burned through those timeouts on bad challenges in the second half. If that version of McVay shows up in the SB, advantage Bengals.

I guess I hadn’t paid much attention to the Rams, but they really did buy that team.
I didn’t believe in the vision that Zac Taylor had for this team. I thought it was just a lot of coach-speak blah blah by a guy that was going to lose his job. But he really proved me wrong. This is a very solid team.
And this matchup reminds me a little of Brady’s first Super Bowl against the greatest show on turf Rams that everyone ooo’ed and ahhh’ed about. That was a coming out event like Brady just like this super bowl is going to be a coming out for Joe Burrow. Burrow just isn’t going to let them lose. I'm not hungover but I'm still speechless. Stunned. Ecstatic. For so many years, even when the Bengals had talent, they had a tendency to make stupid, losing plays in crucial situations. This team is the complete opposite right now. Poised, even-keeled, solid. And when they do make mistakes like Apple's drop in OT, they pick each other up. In that case on the very next play. Bengals fans just aren't used to this.

The Rams played without emotion for 3 quarters and finally decided they wanted to win a championship in the 4th Quarter. Do not overhype Donald. Until that last drive, the Rams dline was not playing championship football, nor was the team. They were fortunate to be playing the 49ers and their impotent offense. That game was a total yawner despite the close score.

That's a great comparison, although no one can probably top the way people loved Nuxhall. But he's a former player turned longtime broadcaster, who sometimes makes the games hard to listen to but you can't help feel so excited for the guy especially since he's stuck with the organization after calling so many losing seasons.

3 assists in a championship game. That was his most recent performance. 2 QB hurries. Not sure what that chart is suppose sed to be, but he was not awe inspiring in last night's game, nor was Von Miller. Yes, Donald is an all time great DT, but obviously he can be handled in any given game.

It’s not so much Ohio State fans but just Ohio in general. He’s from Athens where the high school football stadium is named after him. He’s done so much for the community there from his Heisman speech that has brought in numerous donations to the food pantry there. People who typically wouldn’t follow the NFL or the Bengals are following them locally because of Burrow.
I didn’t realize it until I read the SI article but his mom is the principal at an elementary school in Meigs County that I drive by when I go to Kentucky to visit family.
Joe Burrow is in Ohio lore the same way Barry Larkin is regardless of how the next two weeks play out. Larkin played at Michigan but people remember him being from Ohio. Has nothing to do with where they played college.

I was glad to see Burrow have success at LSU for many reasons. He was from Athens and I watched a state championship game where Burrow had a phenomenal game but Athens HS lost late in the game. Burrow just seemed like such a great kid and played his heart out. When he went to OSU, I just didn’t know how he’d fit in coming from a small high school and playing at a big time school.
IIRC, he backed up JT Barrett for 2 years. And then him and Haskins were neck and neck for the starting QB job in spring practice and then Burrow got hurt. Haskins won by default and then went on to light up the scoreboard in 2018. Burrow had graduated in 3 years so he went to LSU as a graduate transfer. I really couldn’t blame him and was glad he had such great success. Probably more because of the Athens connection rather than OSU.

My point is Ohio State doesn’t need to be chastised for their talent evaluation. One guy was ready in 2018, lit it up, was a Heisman finalist and worked himself into being a first round draft pick. Burrow was pretty average in 2018 and apparently needed a year of development. It’s possible if Burrow stayed healthy he would have won the job, but given what happened that year it seems like the right call was made. Good for Joe for being bold and doing what was best for him by transferring to another top program and succeeding.

Joe didn't get to LSU until August, had to spend the first 3 weeks splitting snaps in a QB competition, played most of that season in an archaic offense, and played a much tougher schedule. His stats at the end of the season and especially the bowl game picked up once LSU went to the spread.

No it isn’t, in fact it worked out great for everyone involved. There wasn’t a person alive at the end of 2018 that was looking at the situation thinking it was a mistake. I think it’s a difficult argument now. Burrow wasn’t the talent he is now at that point. He was pretty average in 2018 and needed to be at a place where he could develop and get reps. He did that and exploded the next year and turned himself into the 1 pick. Ohio States quarterback has been at the Heisman ceremony every season since then. Sometimes situations really are a win win. Right. It's not like they chose Jake Fromm over Justin Fields. They chose one elite college QB over another elite college QB. Sure Haskins hasn't panned out in the pros, but he was pretty awesome in 2018. Nobody, including Orgeron and LSU, expected Burrow to turn into what he did. As a Bengals fan, I'm glad he did. As an OSU fan, I don't have any problem with the coaches making the decision they did.
I'm also not sure Burrow playing at OSU would have made much of a difference in how their seasons ended up. That 2018 team has a historically bad defense that I don't know if any QB could have overcome. The 2019 team was awesome and should have been playing in the national championship against LSU if not for some bad luck and questionable calls. Maybe having Burrow would have changed things in that game, but I'm not going to complain about having Fields

The school that is embarrassed is Nebraska, where Burrow reportedly wanted to go and follow his dad and brothers who played there. Instead, they stuck with Adrian Martinez. IIRC, Burrow's choice was down to UC and LSU. I don't think schools were necessarily banging down his door.

Those are some of the taunts Joe Burrow said he heard from Coach Urban Meyer during the three years he was with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Meyer never quite figured it out, or at least not until it was too late.

Joe Burrow was not Urban's type of QB. He wanted guys with more physical traits. Here's another example:
Cam Newton is often considered one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play college football. So for Urban Meyer to compare Michigan QB Joe Milton to the former Auburn star, it speaks pretty highly of the talent the Wolverines presumed starter possesses.

Literally, one month ago, one month, the Ravens hosted the Rams. One week before that game, the Ravens got annihilated by the Bengals. The 525 yard Burrow passing yards game. Everyone said, doesn't count, Ravens D was all kinds of hurt etc. That same Ravens team, one week later, by all rights should have beaten the Rams. Rams escaped with a 20-19 win. Stafford threw a pick 6 that game. So, yeah, I am reading the same Rams-are-invincible stuff and...I am raising an eyebrow. Rams might win, Rams are favored to win, but...I think the Bengals should go ahead and show up and let's just see what happens...

Bill Belichick also used to tell Tom Brady in film sessions that the kid at the local high school could make a better pass than him. Urban certainly has flaws, but it's not like he thought Burrow was garbage. OSU basically said it was a toss up between Haskins and Burrow. Burrow was actually ahead of Haskins the year before until he got hurt and Haskins jumped him on the depth chart. And for 2018, Haskins certainly looked like the right choice...
Also, Burrow not being Urban's type of QB is somewhat true, but neither was Haskins. Burrow is more mobile than Haskins. This wasn't a case of Meyer being inflexible and having tunnel vision. It was a case of him not being able to predict the future, and I can give him a pass for that. I bet that even if you'd asked Coach O after the 2018 season if he'd rather have Burrow or Haskins that he would have taken Haskins at that point. Nobody saw this coming from Burrow. But thank goodness it did so that we drafted him instead of Tua at #1 :)

Reading preliminary columns about the Super Bowl, suddenly the Rams are one of the greatest teams of all time and the only reason the Bengals are in the Super Bowl is because Maholmes had a bad half of football.
Yeah. They seem to deliberately omit (or forget) the reason as to why he had such a bad half - the Bengal's defensive adjustments, played with a renewed determination. The sports media in this country always tries to pre-determine who they want to win, or who the winner should be. And when it doesn't go that way, they make excuses because their egos couldn't possibly admit they got it wrong.

I know you are an OSU hater, but this is a dumb argument.
Yeah, it's like giving OSU a hard time for letting Ewers go this offseason since Stroud is the no-doubt starter next year. (This works under the assumption that if Day promised Ewers the job he would return)
Some times you just roll with the bird in the hand and don't look back.
If you go "dumping" starters like Haskins and Stroud after the seasons they had...good luck.
(I don't claim Burrow as a Buckeye in the football sense, but he's an Ohio guy through and through)

I would think 4...
Bills, Chiefs, Cowboys and possibly Pats
I think the Saints game could be one. Saints are going to be down but you have the Burrow and Chase back in Louisiana storyline.
And not surprisingly unless the Ravens, Steelers, or Browns are in play all of the teams listed are road games except the Chiefs.

My attitude is not to make it so much about winning. I'm going to live up the event of the weekend. Talk lots of football. Hopefully chat up many other Bengal fans. Drink. Party. If they don't win, I'll tell myself that this is just the beginning of the Joe Burrow era.
Been my attitude the entire playoffs cept for the Raiders game...relax and enjoy this magical ride we are on.

The cart has been used for reporters to put their recorders on as a covid precaution (they put the recorders on the cart and then keep their distance from the players). Earlier this year, there was a picture of a player standing behind the cart that was posted to social media. People used the pic to call the Bengals cheap (why not use a podium) and instead of trying to defend itself, the team's social media leaned into it. The cart has become a tongue-in-cheek mascot.

Rams have the higher ceiling and more star players. But they also have a lower floor. Stafford has looked like the one of the best QBs in the NFL and one of the worst at different points this season. The only guy for the Rams that truly scares me is Aaron Donald. Kupp and Ramsey are incredible, and the DEs are very good, but you can scheme around them a bit. Donald gets to go against our absolute worst player every snap, and that could be a disaster. As long as the Bengals can prevent Donald from having a Jeffrey Simmons-like performance, I think they'll win. But I'm not sure they'll be able to do that. Hopefully the offensive staff figures out something to limit him a bit.

The last two drafts have been nothing short of remarkable:
2020 - Burrow, Higgins, Wilson, Davis-Gaither, Kareem, Adeniji, Bailey
2021 - Chase, Carman, Ossai, Sample, Shelvin, Smith, McPherson, Hill, Evans, Hubert
Only two of those players did NOT make an impact on the 2021 season and one of those (Ossai) was due to injury. A handful of superstars, a couple of solid starters, and a bunch of decent role players. That's how you win.

Paul Brown Stadium... I assume he wanted to honor his dad in some way, so it was kind of sweet in a way, but I've also seen pictures of him at training camp in like 2017 wearing the team's sideline cap from 1997, so I think he just thinks "a hat's a hat."

What Hubbard and Hendrickson did in the 2H of the Chiefs game is nothing short of extraordinary. I rewatched tonight and they were dropping into coverage, spying, and eventually chasing Mahomes all over the field. Lou dropping them into their bunch receivers kinda broke the Chiefs timing. But their effort was beautiful. Literal leaving it all on the field stuff.
Dropping the DE into the bunch also directly led to BJ Hill's int. Mahomes wanted that quick pass but TJ was standing right there and he double clutched and panicked cuz he felt the blitz coming. Best Bengal halftime adjustment of my entire life.

Lou craves high motor smart guys on Defense...the Hubbard play where Mahomes fumbles was a thing of beauty...dropping into coverage while spying him the whole way to end up rushing at the end to get the sack was unbeleivable. Shows how fast and relentless both guys are off the edge.

There was a moment late in the 4th quarter where TV showed Hendrickson on the sideline, hanging on the kickers next, looking like he was hurt, out of gas, seemingly done. In the next series he chased Mahomes out of the pocket to the sideline.

Still taking potshots at Mike Brown in this stage of the Bengals evolution is evidence of bitterness and resentment. He is obviously out of most, if not all of the decision making. Sure, there are still a few lingering issues like the practice facility, but it really seems petty at this point to be ridiculing someone, especially when the organization has accomplished something the ridiculers said would never happen on his watch. Time to move on.

Nah, the guy is a perennial loser. As membengal said, they are here because other people have stepped up. I mean, just watch him in some of the Hard Knocks episodes from years ago where the entire coaching staff recoils at the thought of Mikey moving a DE to TE. Just a small example at how much he tried to f-up this franchise. The lack of self-awareness and cheapness that caused so much grief for many fans. Like I said, it's embarrassing we're using the local university's facility. He owes the entire city an apology for his ineptitude for these past 30 years. The fact Marvin did as well as he did is the most impressive thing anyone in this organization has done since 1991. .. and I'm even counting this year's accomplishments. So yeah, still bitter about him? You bet. He's arguably the last person who should've held the AFCC trophy.

Mike Brown redeemed the disaster of his first ten years when he hired Marvin. A lot of demons were exercised with Marvin's tenure. Prior to Marvin, the goalposts were "just be a competent NFL franchise." That happened, the goalposts were moved to "you have to win playoff games." Now I see that the goalposts for some will always be "I will always hate Mike Brown." That is what I read when I see folks taking potshots in one if the most fun times ever to be a Bengals fan. I thought this is what we wanted from this organization, but clearly some will always be perpetually moving the goalposts.

How are we supposed to handle the Bengals being a cool team?

I really hope he can play if he's healthy. But I'll take a 100% Sample/Wilcox combo vs. a 50% Uzomah. The Bengals are going to need help keeping the Rams line off Burrow. I don't know how much you can count on Uzomah to do that if he's got a bum knee.
I really believe if he plays I think he'll be fully able, otherwise they're not going to let him on the field.
I wouldn't be surprised if he just gets like 5-10 snaps, few enough that he can go 100% before he'd start feeling it.

Yep I don’t plan on giving The MB debate one second of thought…this ride has been absolutely magical and I sure as heck am not going to jinx it with any negativity.
We've had an extra week to argue about it. I'll put a moratorium on it for the rest of the week, I promise. I obviously have strong feelings on it.

Clark Harris is genuinely hilarious:

It'll be huge if he can go and be close to full health. This is a good breakdown from PFF about how the Bengals could attack the Rams D with quick game, and that will be a lot more effective with a good TE.

Just enjoy the moment.
We can talk about Mike in the off-season but the Bengals are still playing right now .
In February! The Super Bowl!
This doesn’t happen often. It might not happen again.
That’s how I’m trying to handle it. Issues remain, but enjoy the current success
I don’t think the Bengals have ever played in February before

They had a pretty good sized rally at PBS last night the entire lower bowl looked filled with fans...Elizabeth Blackburn and her team did a nice job putting it together for the team. They have really done a nice job this season revamping the game day experience and their social media platform.

I know we've got a game this week, but can you imagine how fun this team is going to be with a good offensive line? They're doing this with Burrow running for his life, good freaking luck to other teams when Burrow has a few seconds to work with on each drop back. They might put up 35+ a game next year.

The Weather Channel had a piece today on the Super Bowl forecast and it's supposed to be hot and dry. It could possibly be the hottest Super Bowl ever, which was in 1973 (also in LA) 84 degrees. Right now they're forecasting 82 degrees for Sunday.
I hope our guys are up for that kind of heat. We need to keep them hydrated for sure. One good thing is that heat generally wears down defenses. Let's hope the Rams D line wears down as the game goes along. As for us attending the game, don't pack too many sweatshirts and long pants

It’s not gonna be that hot in the stadium. There’s no AC but the roof does a good job of keeping it cooler. I’ve actually had a couple friends say it can even feel a little cold in there if there’s wind.

I cannot recommend enough the latest Robert Mays pod - first 30 minutes breaking down LouA's D w/ Ollie Connolly - its a GREAT listen - and if enough of you all listen we can even discuss! Lots of Xs and Os...

30,000 fans - lower bowl filled - all 30,000 free tix snapped up in 30 under two hours when they made them available. It was spectacular. The Rams had 3000 fans...at a HS stadium. If that were reversed. media would have crushed us. Since it was the Rams, everyone acted like that was a good turnout...

Need to get to this, The Athletic content has been great for the last week. How are you feeling about the Rams?

you know me, bad. Worried. Don't know what we have any answer for their d-line. Etc.
And still, I've felt that way for every big game and here we are. A not insignificant part of me thinks we might find another way again. I've underestimated them for a lot of this year...

I feel weirdly chill. I think I used up all my anxiety on the Chiefs game. That offense scares me to death - the Rams have a good one too of course but not on the same level.
Needs to be a solid game plan. I actually believe in Lou to figure out the D somehow, but we can't have Zac Taylor turtling up here. Need the game in Burrow's hands, even if that has to mean an extremely quick pass game.

I wouldn't blame ZT for turtling a bit again - they can't let the rams d-line destroy the game and Burrow like Titans did. I don't think that works. I think you have to block with at least six and maybe 7. And run a bit more than we want. This isn't the evolution of this offense yet until the line is better. It's unreal ZT has gotten them this far. Credit to him and Callahan and Burrow, but...can't let the Rams d-line wreck the game.
