Jamie Ramsey @Jamieblog

The Reds last night used just 9 batters in an Opening Day game for the first time since beating the Braves 9-0 in the 1980 opener. Frank Pastore threw a complete game 3-hit shutout that day and went 1-for-3 with an RBI at the plate.

Happy that Fraley is in RF and Naquin at DH. I was sure it would be Naquin in RF and Moran at DH. Lets see what Fraley can become. I don't think he'll be a main cog, but I think he can be a solid contributor to this team when it's ready to contend.

One result of the Reds’ shakeup is a better defensive outfield.

To illustrate, Naquin was out of position in CF last year. This year he’s DHing and, on defense, likely to stick in the corners.

Bad defense/out of position players/Shogo were an anchor on the overall production of the OF last year despite huge offensive seasons from 2 of its members. I like the improvement on D.

I’d rather have Fraley hitting second over Naquin, but that’s a minor quibble. Really I think Pham should be 2 vs. 3 and bump TySteve to 3, but it’s also just Game #2 so plenty of time for lineup adjustments.

Interesting that Senzel is hitting ahead of Moustakas, which puts two RH back-to-back. You'd think Moustakas would have hit 6th, Senzel 7th, Fraley 8th, and Farmer 9th. That's a completely balanced lineup. I can't decide if it shows that Bell thinks Senzel is hitting well or Moustakas is struggling. (Or perhaps he recognizes that Senzel needs a bit more protection?)

Braves have Orlando Arcia as their DH hitting 9th. Guilermo Herdia is sitting the bench with a 740 OPS vs. southpaws. Odd choice, that.

In 18 career games against the Reds, Charlie Morton has pitched to a 4.41 ERA. That's sixth-worst of any team he's faced.

Reiver Sanmartin gave up 0.5 HR/9 in 2021. His minor league career high is 0.8 in 2019 at AA Chattanooga. Don't expect him to give up a ton of dingers. Do, however, expect quite a few base hits. Sanmartin gives up a hit per inning.

I wonder if part of the thinking for the Reds using Moreta in the 8th last night was they didn't want to burn Strickland, Warren and Santillan all in the same night. Early in the season and all the young arms in the rotation, these guys are going to get a lot of use, hence saving them when they get the opportunity.

Good call.

Cessa, Moreta, Wilson, and Santillan are likely off-limits today.

That leaves approximately 412 relief arms for Bell to choose from.

I think Sanmartin, at the very least, is a good bullpen piece. Not writing him off as a starter based on that inning. He’s got one + pitch; possibly 2. Easy delivery, seems to be a cool customer on the mound.

I agree, he’s not a AAAA guy like FCB is saying. He’s a 25 year old lefty with some stuff. Most likely he ends up as a LHP out of the pen, but he’s got a chance to be a BOR starter. I think he will carve a decent mlb career out.

I'm confused on why the Senzel catch last inning wasn't a double play. The Braves runner on first went to second and was tagged out by India. The Braves had two runners at second, with the batter Albies at first....That should have been a second out....

He needs to add some velo. His change up is legit - but it will play way better off of 92 than off of 89. If he’s going to hang as a SP, he’ll need to refine the slider a bit as well. Maybe he can add a cutter?

We (I’d conservatively say at least 75 percent of us on here, myself included) didn’t know who Sanmartin was before last September.

He comes up, pitches twice against the Pirates. Box score seems alright but he had a (edit 1.20) WHIP in those games.

He had exceptional control in the minors… I just think 89mph isn’t enough - even with a deceptive delivery. He either needs to add a bit to the fastball, get his slider to “plus,” or develop another pitch. He doesn’t quite have enough. He can be a LR or MR with his current arsenal
