I’ve just never seen anything like it, it’s so weird.

Reds notes: Nick Senzel returns after bout with stomach flu;


Nobody wants Nick Senzel to play a full healthy season more than Nick Senzel, but there was no avoiding a five-game absence because of the stomach flu.

David Bell wanted to rest his legs before a West Coast road trip, but when Senzel woke up Thursday in Los Angeles, he was too sick to even show up at the ballpark.

“I thought in my mind that it was a 24-hour thing,” Senzel said. “I broke the fever in the morning and the plan was to get moving around. And it just didn't get any better. It got worse.”

He participated in some pregame activities Friday, but he was sent back to the hotel when he became ill.

The Reds placed Senzel on the COVID-related Injured List on Saturday, which doesn’t have a minimum or maximum number of days a player can spend on it. Senzel never tested positive for COVID, but players can be placed on it if they show symptoms, so teams can fill the roster spot.

Senzel was activated from the COVID-related IL before Monday’s game against San Diego, but he didn’t come off the bench.

“I want to be back out there,” said Senzel, who drove to San Diego separately from the team. “I, obviously, don't want to be missing games, but there's not a whole lot I can do there. It's just something that hit me hard. Now, not doing anything over the last couple of days, it's good to get back here and moving.”

He threw his arms quickly down when he saw Tyler's head boring in on his ribs, a natural reaction to seeing his ribs at risk. No ill intent.

People have been clamoring to have both catchers in the batting order and Bell tried it tonight. The way to maximize the value of that is to have one as the DH. On the minimal chance the catcher gets injured, you still use the other catcher, but lose the DH. I'm sure Bell assessed that possibility and thought it was what he wanted to do tonight. Didn't work out like a lot of things lately!
