After last night's game:

Jeff Wallner
@JeffWallner

Been through some rough times with the #Reds, but always had one or two players who were the go-to guys to answer the hard questions. Not many available tonight. Pham, a veteran, was at his locker but refused to talk. Drury did his best. This club is in a bad place right now.

@JoeyVotto

The experience of being in a batting slump is that it feels like a labyrinth. One feels trapped, alone, and disoriented. When you finally get out you are relieved and can’t believe how easy it was to find the exit. Unfortunately, that exit eventually leads to another labyrinth.

Charlie Goldsmith
@CharlieG__

David Bell said there’s a possibility that Jonathan India returns Tuesday. Yesterday was an “encouraging day” of workouts.

Bell said Tyler Stephenson may not go on the Colorado road trip (concussion protocol).

Jake Fraley has been dealing with a knee issue

.

KeefeCato
04-24-2022, 12:46 PM
at least we get to watch lodolo?

no?

I hope they can get creative with Lodolo and Greene's innings. With off days maybe skip one when the other 4 starters can still go on 4 days rest. Skip the other the next time.
Maybe once Castillo gets back go with a 6 man rotation for a few turns. That would be tough though. Cause by the time he gets back Rosters get cut from 28 to 26. Which means 13 pitcher limit. 6 man rotation would mean only 7 relievers.
Maybe when they get stretched out more a few of the relievers can go 2-3 inning stints. But hard to get stretched out when they are still only pitching 1 inning per outing. It's time that if a reliever throws a clean inning with few pitches. To let him go 2 innings.
I don't know what the answer is. But I'd like to see them not get shut down early due to innings limit.

I agree generally but probably not in this case. Fraley would have to be on the IL for 10 days (not COVID symptoms). If he’s available on the bench today, as Bell suggests, that would have been overkill.

More excitement for a Bats game than the Reds lineup. In fact more excitement for a Dragons game than the Reds lineup.

Management did this. Itís all on them!!! It makes me sick they didnít ride the wave of the Bengals and keep everyone for run this year.

The place would be packed for every home game. Instead they donít care. ďBut where else you gonna go?Ē

The Reds need a win today to stay within 2 games of the '82 Reds, who won on this day by a score of 3-2 over the Astros in Houston. Frank Pastore outdueled Bob Knepper in a game that lasted just 2 hours and 5 minutes. Concepcion doubled, tripled, and stole a base for the Reds, who raised their record on the season to 5-11.

Crazy thing about that ERA vs today's game. They could almost play two games back then in the time it takes to play one today.

It is around this time in a normal spring training that pitchers hit the wall with dead arm period. Hopefully that is all it was. I agree though they let Hunter throw too many pitches the start before. Nick had far less pitches today though that Greene did. I would have given him one more batter.

Both of these guys are up a year too soon IMO. The idea was put them in the rotation to let them learn, but err on the side of caution. Winning or losing this game means nothing. Lodolo or Greene tiring and altering their motion or overthrowing to get that last out could mean an injury that lasts a lot longer than today. Next year at this time when they've had another year of building up their pitch counts and innings base, I'd say leave him in, but not this year.

I just think he's the epitome of a guy who only plays for losing teams. You are right, there are worse guys, I just hate the surrender that counting on a guy like him represents. Hated the signing for that reason even though it was probably OK at $1 Million. Your not wrong. Moran types are usually found getting playing time on losing clubs. At best they are the last guy on the bench of winning clubs. But even the bad clubs have to fill out the roster with someone. And Moran is kind of the best of the worst of those types.

If you can get some team's top 5 prospect, by all means trade him. More likely it won't be anyone in their top 30. How do the Reds replace him? Even if its McLain and Barrero in the MI next year, they will need a 300 PA guy who can play 2B and SS who can do a solid job. The Reds are also woefully short of RH bats and Farmer is decent against LHP. Trading guys like Farmer for perceived future value (which usually ends up being nothing) is how teams end up with guys like Aristedes Aquino on the roster way past his 15 minutes of fame.

You realize that if he brings some team's number 15 or 20 prospect, that likely is an interchangeable part in the big leagues even if they get there. The Reds can get those types of players on the minor league FA market for cheap every year. No need to trade guys who have solid uses on the big league roster for them. If its not an impact prospect, its not worth it IMO. Those tyoes are fine if you are just moving salary, but not for guys who have value to the roster.

So I stand by it. If you can't get a top 5 in somebody's system, they get more value out of keeping Farmer. He should be in the long term plan. A solid back up middle infielder who can start for long periods of time if necessary is pretty valuable to a team who is turning things over to a couple of kids. More valuable than the next Jon Coutlangus or Cionel Perez.

Not counting this season. Way too soon.

When I talk about “superb,” I’m talking about the entire package he offers. The multi-positional versatility and the high caliber at which he can play those positions. He’s a little better than league average at the plate. He’s not a superstar, but ge is a very valuable player to have. That sort of value is not well-expressed by the WAR metric.

And that’s the qualifier. He’s a fine fill-in guy who can play many positions - that’s great to have!

And this is my fault but forgive my quick rebuttal - when clicking the game thread for the first time today the first thing I see is “Kyle Farmer has been superb for 2 years.” I don’t have the self-control to be quiet.

Farmer has never been close to being even an average hitter, let alone being above average. Hes never come close to a 100 ops+

He’s perfectly mediocre, which has some value, but not much.

I do have to push back that he is better than league average at the plate. According to both OPS+ and wRC+ he's ~10-15% below average

Big hit by Riddle today. Told ya he'd come through. Didn't strike out.

One thing about riddle, I didn't have this feeling of impending doom each time the ball was hit to 3B the way I do with Moose or Moran over there. I know he's only a temp who is gone as soon as some guys get back, but it was nice to have a well played game over there.

I’m not going to keep replying to 3 different people.

Reds would have been a lot worse off without him last season.

He’s a good player. As I mentioned earlier, a lot of his contributions don’t show up in advanced metrics.

He’s no all star and I already willingly conceded he has to give way to Barrero when the time comes, but he can play all over, and he’s far superior to any of our other designated utility men. Any team is better with a guy like Farmer on it. That’s my point and always has been.

Complimenting or praising Farmer around here is a deed that never goes unpunished.

I agree with the sentiment but disagree with the prospect ranking requirement. I would have no problem getting a high ceiling/low floor prospect lower in someone's system

There may be some really strong systems that a guy like that would be ranked in the 10 to 15 range, but for the most part a guy like that would be in the top 5 or his ceiling isn't all that high. I wouldn't trade him for a long shot who can hit the ball 500 feet but can't make contact or a guy who throws 95 and can't get it over the plate. The Reds absolutely need to turn the page and hand things to Barrero and McLain, but even if they do, they need a guy like Farmer for a couple of years. I think it gives those guys a better chance to succeed and that's more important than a middling prospect IMO.
