Big age gap in opposing pitchers today.
When 40-year-old Adam Wainwright was drafted in the 1st round of the 2000 MLB Draft by the Braves, 22-year-old Hunter Greene was less than a year old. Greene was born 8/6/99.

A couple of pregame tidbits:
Joey Votto is a career .317 hitter with a 1.039 OPS and 4 homers vs. Wainwright in 60 ABs.

Votto is slashing .355/.474/.774 (11-for-31) 3 HR, 12 RBIs during his current 9-game hit streak.

The long-awaited debut of über-prospect Chris Okey, who will be catching some other farmhand named Green.

Nick Senzel is back from his most recent bout with rheumatoid arthritis with a side of whooping cough and a hyperextended r mandible. We’re all wishing him well.

Should be a fun one.

I feel like Okey wouldn’t have gotten this chance in any other organization. It’s difficult to perform as badly as he did at the minor league level for as many years as he did. Most orgs would have cut him. His 2017, 2018, and 2019 were terrible.

He's a catcher that got a sizeable bonus. He'll probably have a 10 year career.

Cards catchers do an excellent job of snapping the pitch back into the strike zone.

I guess many catchers do it, but seems to work well for them.

Reds claimed OF Stuart Fairchild off waivers from Arizona and optioned him to Louisville. RHP James Marinan was DFA'd. Fairchild was originally in the Reds organization and traded to the D-Backs with Josh VanMeter for reliever Archie Bradley in 2020.

Now trade Fairchild to the Angels for Bradley

If Farmer is the super sub, who’s the third baseman?

Moose or is he a DH?

Drury? Is he better than Farmer all around? Maybe Drury is the super sub.

If Drury continues to hit, can he play LF?

Or do Reds trade most of them?

Or does Barrero move to CF?

Lot of questions.

Drury/Moose/Farmer when he subs the spot. Solano when he gets back. Possibly McClain when he comes up. Matt Reynolds when India's back. Lots of options.

Drury's probably getting traded.

Strickland was good with the Giants but that’s a few years ago. Since then he’s bounced around from team to team.

The Reds signed him around March 22. Ask yourself why he was still available at that point in the off-season.

They look for the cheapest guys who don’t have a deal at the very end. Similar to the Doolittle signing, another very good reliever but from years back.

He was good with Tampa and Milwaukee last year. Bad in 6 innings with the Angels. Solid overall basic stats last year. I didn't expect him to be lockdown guy. Thought he'd be much better though than he has been.

If you use Diaz to close. You might be tied or losing this game at the start of the 9th. Diaz got out of a jam in the 6th. Had he not pitched the 6th. Might not be a lead to try and close now.

You're right, the replacement may not be any better, but I think it's more about sending a message: perform, or you will be somewhere else. A new owner might just help that happen. Bell makes some boneheaded moves, but I feel bad for the guy having to sit there KNOWING what's inevitable. More than once I've mentioned this, but I don't know if there's a league-wide problem of players starting the season fat and out of shape. I mean, you're an ATHLETE, everyone should be in shape and then you let the differences in skill dictate things. Is it too much to ask for players to stand on the mound and not look like Babe Ruth pitching?

Come on. I don’t like Bell at all, but he can’t be held responsible for what just happened. At all.

I do think Bell could instill a little more fire in this ballclub, maybe hold guys accountable for what they do off the field? Piniella wouldn't put up with this, my memory is foggy.

Tony Cloninger
06-11-2022, 06:17 PM
What are they doing off the field that requires Bell to out his foot down?

I agree they tolerate bad performances a lot as this roster clearly shows with Aquino and Stricknine.

In 1992 Pinella saw the Reds overrated by that point bullpen of Dibble and Charlton blow 10 games in the 8-9 innings that year. At least 2 to the Braves in the 9th. One to the Mets on a walk off from that horrible Bonilla who was bad that year with Dibble tearing off his uniform. Pinella did finally lose it with Dibble and his talking to the press. But Lou put up with it a lot and really so did the FO. I mean they had only 1 LH in that pen besides Charlton. He was bad too. Scott Ruskin.

At least this team has an excuse that they are all bad save for Diaz.

traderumor
06-11-2022, 06:57 PM
if your best pitchers are only able to go 5-6 innings as starters cover the opening innings with relief and bring in starter in 4th. I know, rotation arms have a pregame routine to get ready for 1st pitch, so they develop a routine to enter in game.

For a roster builder to have a plan that requires your weakest members of the staff to cover 33-44% of your need is stupidity beyond belief, but geniuses all over the league are trying it. How's that working out?

Like I have said. In today's game starters go 6. You need a bare minimum of 4 consistently good relievers. 6 is what most of the top teams have. 6 good ones and they fill the last 2-3 spots with guys who are the better Reds relievers. Santillan, Kuhnel. Hoffman, Cessa. Warren those types are the last 2-3 pitchers/mop up guys on good bullpen.
The Reds have exactly 1 good reliever and he is unproven. Who knows how his season and career will go. Looks very promising but still unproven.

The Yankees do and it’s nut from spending tons of money. They have 2 very bad retreads who have turned into gold. Wendy freaking Peralta. That’s one of them. Chapman is still good. The Dodgers. Brewers. They are not blowing tons of money on it.
