I've had Strider all year for my fantasy team. Picked him up after seeing him in relief against Reds in the first series. He moved into the starting rotation for the Braves about 5 turns through the rotation ago and he's been REALLY good. Just electric stuff. Fastball between 98 and 100 with some movement and a devastating slider. Shows the occasional change. Able to pound the zone at the knees on the black. Good luck, Reds.

For all the talk about how Bob Gibson would bean you if you hit a HR off him or stared at him etc.
He is tied for 86 place all time in hit batters. Greg Maddux hit far more batters than Gibson.
Seems like he tried to intimidate hitters rather than actually hit them in most cases anyway.
Today's hitter would crowd the plate on him and pile on the armor.
I doubt his most likely 90 mph fastball would intimidate many in today's game.

Probably topped out at 92 or so. 90% of the pitchers back then threw 80. So anyone above 90 would've been fast.
Great pitcher no doubt. Not sure how good most of those guys would be today. Everyone throws 98 and up it seems.
70s are my era. And I love 70s baseball. But I doubt few if any could compete in today's game.
Of course they would also have access to today's training methods. So a Gibson in his prime today would probably hit triple digits.

Shift certainly hurts him. He isn't hitting the ball in the air enough nor is he hitting it hard enough.
Batting averages throughout baseball continue to plummet.
Maybe this will be the last year of the shift. If do I think Votto has a chance to put up a solid season next year.

Obviously I don't wanna see Farmer hurt. But it's time for Barrero.
I know he isn't hitting in AAA. But he can pick it at SS.
He has twice the range Farmer has. Farmer has next to no range at SS. He shouldn't be playing SS at the major league level. Not his fault though that's the Reds fault.
Farmer has to be the least athletic of any starting major league SS.
This Reds team as a whole has to be the least athletic team in baseball.

I'm sure zero will agree with me on this lol, but I don't think the Reds failures this season are all because of lack of talent, aging players. I think Bell is part and parcel with what happened at the beginning of the season, and it wasn't just Phil and it wasn't just injuries. Bell is a bit too easy on the guys, IMO. I see him over there seething, and I told my husband "I don't see how he's able to take it day in and day out". Bell is about to meet his maker :)

**RETRO 4th of JULY BASEBALL FLASHBASK ***

July 4, 1985. Mets @ Braves. One of the craziest games I ever watched. I was 22 y.o. and we were on vacation for the 4th of July weekend in Fairfield Glade, TN. I was in the condo watching the game on WTBS out of Atlanta. Had three lengthy rain delays and a lot of hitting. Mets manager Davey Johnson and Darryl Strawberry ere both ejected in the 17th for arguing. Keith Hernandez hit for the cycle. The Mets had 28 hits in the game. The Mets took a 11-10 lead in the top of the 18th .

The bottom of the 18th was where the game went from crazy to unfathomable. The first two Braves' batters had been retired and Atlanta had no position players left to send to the plate. They were stuck with having to bat reliever Rick Camp, a lifetime 0.060 hitter. His hitting was often the butt of jokes among Braves' announcers.

The game started at 7:05 pm and it was more the EIGHT hours since the start . But dammit, I was gonna see this one through. Even though it was 3:20 am , I was gonna watch the last pitch. The 45,000 that was in attendance at 7:05 pm had dwindled to well under 4,500. And most of them stayed because they had been promised a 4th of July fireworks display at game's end.

Camp gets down quickly 0-2 to Mets lefty Tom Gorman . John Sterling and Ernie Johnson on the call :

(Note: A couple things to watch for. Watch Gary Carter wave the outfield in when Camp steps in. Also, watch Mets' 3B Ray Knight throw his arms up as the ball leaves Camp's bat. Also, watch Mets' LF Danny Heep put his hands to his head as the ball sails over the fence. Lenny Dykstra looks exasperated as he picks himself up off the ground.)

Maybe Farmer would be better off at third base. But he’s hitting .280 against big league pitching and Barrero is hitting .207 against AAA pitching. With 40% strikeouts.

You can’t just breeze past that. Maybe Jose’s injury still needs time.

I literally never woke up in the middle of the night. I fell asleep with that game on. Woke up to see Camp's HR.
I wish I could say that now. I never sleep more than 4 hours without waking up.
Camp spent time in prison for stealing money later on. He passed away a few years back RIP.

Maybe Farmer would be better off at third base. But he’s hitting .280 against big league pitching and Barrero is hitting .207 against AAA pitching. With 40% strikeouts.

You can’t just breeze past that. Maybe Jose’s injury still needs time.

Farmer is very useful. I think he is fine as a platoon guy. Or even to fill in at SS short term due to injury.
Farmer, Solano, Pham, and Drury. Most likely all 4 are platoon guys on contending teams.
I would guess at least two from this group will be dealt to a contender.
Or at least IMO they should be.

Really not sure why they brought in Sanmartin. But I'm also not sure why he's in the majors.

No manager is going to be hard on players. Those days are gone.

I can't remember the details. But he spent a few years in prison for stealing money from some organization. Seems like others were in on it with him. But I don't think they were ball players. Maybe a friend? Or should I say a bad friend.

You are right. No one will. Reds have bad players period. Wouldn't matter who the manager is.

You can trade all these guys. You can view them all as backups.

But that doesn’t change Barrero’s current BA, OPS or K rate against minor league pitching.

Not sure why Jose is the one who’s a big league starter right now.

Managers are pretty much just a guy on the bench these days. With the DH in the NL now they have even less to do.

Bell has 8 horrible bullpen choices. I see people are here saying I can't believe Cessa or Kuhnel are on this team. Or pick a name.
Frankly outside of Hoffman none on the active roster belongs on it. Hoffman would probably be on some other teams serving the long man /mop up role. Even he is borderline.

Used to love watching games on WTBS, along with Georgia Championship Wrestling.

The Rick Camp game ended at 3:55 am. The Mets scored five times in the top of the 19th off Camp but the Braves rallied(of course they did) for two runs in the bottom of the inning and had the tying run at the plate in noneother than...Rick Camp, who struck out against Ron Darling. Now, if Camp had homered a second time to tie it up again, I would have looked for Rod Serling to appear. Btw, the fireworks started at about 4:05 am. Some folks in Atlanta were awakened in their sleep, thinking the city was under attack. It wasn't General Sherman who mounted the offensive in Atlanta that early morning, however. It was Rick Camp. (RIP)

Nope it doesn't. But now is the time to get him some major league experience. He may never hit in the majors. But they need to find out. I've saw guys from time to time actually get a boost of confidence when being named a starter in the majors and actually preform better than they did in the minors.

Maybe the popular response is it's not going to change so move on, but takes a minority to make a majority haha.

I watched the Braves and Cubs every day back in the 80s. Kept score most games too. Even if the teams were bad it was great fun to watch every day.

*** KFR'S SCOREBOARD STUMPER***

A two -parter:

1. There are only two players in Major League history to have hit 20 or more homeruns in a season for BOTH the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves? Can you name both players?

2. There are are only three players in the Major League history to have ever stolen 20 or more bases in a season for BOTH the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves. Can you name all three?

1. Ron Gant , Bret Boone

2. Deion Sanders , Reggie Sanders, Ron Gant

I'm fine if Bell is fired today. It won't change anything though. This is the worst Reds team in history. Talent level vs. The top teams heck vs. The .500 teams even. Is a huge difference. The Cubs and Pirates are terrible. But both teams especially the Pirates have some good looking young lalent on the roster.
I highly doubt most of us ever live to see the Reds win a playoff series much less a world series.
Organization needs completely blown up and restarted from scratch. New owners. New GM . All new minor league coaches. Everyone needs to go.
I'd say it's just as likely the Reds relocate in our lifetime as it is they win a world series.
MLB might step in and block any move for them to relocate. But does MLB powers even care about tradition? Doubtful.

Those 85-88 teams were exciting to watch. Just a couple starting pitchers away from winning a few divisions.
A 82 83 Soto performance would have really helped them.
Houston or who ever happened to be in first during that 4 year period. They could never win head to head against and over take them.
I wish last year's squad would have had a bullpen as good as those teams did.

102 I meant. 98 and 102.

It's going to take some guys, who are the ends of their careers, getting hot. It wasn't that long ago when they were what 13-15 games under .500 and we were all thinking that maybe just maybe they had a comeback in them? Not that long ago we won what, six games in a row?

This is true. I had some hope after they had a winning May but the June record of 9-18, combined with what little talent we have being traded away soon, makes me think this club won't win at a 30% clip.

Plus, will we have Castillo and/or Mahle after the trade deadline? May be an uphill climb to avoid 100 L's.

We had a family get together at my daughters house after we left the ballpark and by the time my wife and I got home I was too tired to check in on the game thread.

It seemed like half the crowd were all Atlanta fans. Spencer Strider dominated the Reds lineup he looked untouchable. At least the score was close until the bullpen showed up.

From where we were sitting, half way down the RF line, when the ball left Almora's bat with 2 out and the bases loaded I thought it had a shot to be a game winning grand slam. Seemed like everyone around us thought so too.

I enjoyed listening to three guys sitting in front of us discuss the game, I guess they were in their early 20's and I think it must have been one guys first Reds game in person by some of the things he said and questions he asked the other two. One thing he said was it doesn't look like Mahle throws the ball this hard watching him pitch on tv, then when he saw Striker he kept saying WOW! lol

They were having a good time even though the Reds couldn't hardly buy a hit.

Wish Almora's fly ball would've left the yard, haven't been to a Reds walk off in what seems like forever.

Now is not the time. Handing guys jobs just because is a whole lot of the problem in the organization. How many times do we need to see it fail?

I'd play Reynolds at SS and call up a Stuart Fairchild if Farmer hits the IL.
