If Votto can pinch hit, and I don’t know if he can, then he’s at least as valuable as whoever they call up, who would just be a pinch hitter.

Post-game yesterday Bell said he was looking to give Senzel a day off. I guess that’s today.

As bad as Moose has been, the team has so little LHH against RHP. So it’s understandable he’ll play against RHP.

Yes and I understand the hope but he’s hitting .208 against right handed pitchers this year

Just curious are you left handed? I am. And I agree with you. This is the least amount of LHH the Reds have had in years.
Always give me a LHH over a RHH is both players are equal talent. That's a given due to the low amount of LHP.

Reds announcers you don't need to push Drury for the all star game. He is a lock to go to it. After all they have to take a player from each team.
Since Stephenson lost so much time. Who else would they take off the roster ? Nobody of course.

I’m not left handed. But I do believe they are important in a lineup that, like most, usually faces righty pitching. It’s usually an advantage to have good opposite handed hitters in the lineup against most pitchers.

****"BALK OFF" BASEBALL****

Friday's game ended in a "balk off" win for the Redlegs, only the 23rd time it has ever happened in modern baseball history. The only other time the Reds won in "balk off" fashion was on April 28, 1965 when Ernie Broglio of the Cubs balked in Tommy Harper of the Reds at Crosley Field. I remember it well. Actually, I'm kidding. I was 2 years old. All I remember from 1965 is getting electrocuted while trying to stick a fork in an electrical outlet. It burnt like hell and I cried and cried. Probably what Broglio felt like doing after balking home Harper for the winning freebie.

Broglio, sorry. Had Biggio on my brain.

Who knows the Reds may end up with Stephenson. Drury and Castillo. With so many opting out of all star games these days. Plus they sit out of it with even the slightest of injuries. But one thing is for sure. Should the Reds just get one player. It's going to be Drury.

*** LOSING WEIRD, WINNING WEIRD ****

This has been a rather miserable season for our Reds and it's also had it weird games as well. Friday night was an extrememly weird end to the game and then a few weeks ago was a really weird way to lose---giving up no hits to the opposing team and still losing. That has happened only a handful of times in history. But only ONCE in the history of this grand game has a pitcher ever pitched a complete game nine-inning no-hitter... AND LOST . And the no-hitter was pitched against our very own Cincinnati Reds. Stay tuned for the rest of the story...

*** A NO-NO FOR THE AGES ****

As I mentioned, only once in the history of baseball has a pitcher tossed a complete game nine-inning no hitter and LOST. It happened on April 25, 1964( I was too busy eating Gerber peaches and sucking my thumb to care) at old Colt 45's Stadium in Houston. A grand total of 5,426 folks paid to see it. The pitcher was Ken Johnson of Houston. He mowed down the Reds lineup on that day and was cruising in the ninth with one out when the Reds' batter bunted the ball to Johnson ,who threw errantly to first allowing the Reds runner to advance to second. Chico Ruiz then grounded out, moving the runner to third. With now two outs, Vada Pinson hit a ground ball to Nellie Fox at second who misplayed the ball for an error , allowing the game's only run to score. Johnson got Frank Robinson to end the inning, but the damage was already done. The Colt 45's got a runner on base in the bottom of the inning as a result of a two-out error but the final Houston batter struck out looking, giving the Reds a 1-0 win in a game in which they were no-hit for nine innings.

The Reds final line was 1 R 0 H 2 E . Johnson's line: 9 IP 1R 0 H 2BB 9 K

After the game(which lasted only 1hr, 56 min), Johnson said , " I pitched the best game of my life and still lost. Hell of a way to get into the record books."

Btw, who was that Reds' player who scored the only run in his team's no-hit WIN?
.

He was a young 23 year-old second baseman from Cincinnati , batting just .154 on the young season. His name---PETER EDWARD ROSE . And who got the shutout win that day , when his team couldn't even muster a single hit in support of his pitching. It was noneother than the old left-hander, JOE NUXHALL.

And now you know....THE REST.... OF THE STORY !!!

************* THE REST OF THE STORY **********************

The other day when I was writing about Hank Aaron having some of his biggest hits right here in our beloved Queen City, I mentioned that he got his 3000th hit in Cincinnati. Of course, we all remember Hank getting number 714 off of Billingham on Opening Day in '74. But on May 17, 1970 Hank became the first player ever to accumulate 3,000 hits AND hit 500 HR's. Let me share with those who are interested something that is lesser known about that day in Crosley Field. First, on the Aaron hit.

That Sunday at Crosley was a festive day, with the anticipation of the history that could possibly occur. Four thousand standing room only tickets had been sold, and 33,217 fans were crammed into Crosley that day, the biggest crowd in the old ballpark in over 23 years. One of those in attendance was none other than Stan Musial, the only living member of the 3,000 hit club. He had arrived in Cincinnati a little before 11 am that Sunday morning, went and got his shoes shined, and then came to the ballpark. A little before noon, Stan"The Man," went to the clubhouse and posed with Aaron for some pictures and swapped some baseball stories with Hank.

While Aaron took BP, Musial, decked out in a blue suit and his newly shined shoes, took his place in the front row box alongside the Braves' owner. The Brave and Reds had a doubleheader to play on this day, so fans had good reason to expect history. Hank went hitless in game one but it didn't take him long it didn't take him long to get number 3,000 once the second game of the twinbill commenced. He hit a grounder off of Reds' starter Wayne Simpson that Woody Woodward went to his left and fielded but couldn't make a throw. There it was... History !!! Base hit number 3,000 in his 2,460th game played.

Musial climbed over the railing and headed to first to congratulate Aaron, as the fans were giving the Braves' #44 a standing ovation. Musial had wanted to be here to see Hank get the hit. In fact, when Musial got number 3,000 , he told a young Henry Aaron that he would be the next one to reach that milestone. And on this day, May 17, 1970 , Musial proved to be a prophet. Now there were two living members of the 3,000 hit club in the house. A Cincinnati boy by the name of Rose started in right field that day. As we all know he would one day eclipse the hit totals of both Aaron and Maris. How's that for a triumverate of hitters under one roof on that special day more than 50 years ago??? WOW!!!

Two innings later, Hank would homer off of Simpson for his 570th career long ball. Hank would finish that day with 3,002 hits. The last of those hits would be the final one Hank would ever hit at Crosley Field, because the Braves wouldn't be back in town until June 30, when the Reds would open their brand new baseball home, Riverfront Stadium. As most all of you know, Hank would hit a two-run homer off of Jim McGlothlin in the first inning of the first game at Riverfront. Yes, the first homerun and first RBI's at Riverfront came off of the bat of Hank Aaron.

The game itself was a good one . Tied at the end of regulation 3-3 , the game proceeded to extras where the Braves scored three in the 10th to take the lead and the Reds came back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning. The Reds would win it in the 15th inning on a single by a 19 year-old left-hand pitcher from Lynn , KY by the name of Don Gullett. Not only would Gullett get the game-winning hit he also pitched two scoreless innings in relief to get the win and give the Reds a sweep of the doubleheader and blistering 27-10 record on the season.

************************************************** ************************************************** *******************************

Now for the rest of the story.

Lost among all the historical significance of the day , the hoopla , and the festive atmosphere of having the celebrated Stan "The Man" Musial in the house was a young 22-year old who started center field for the Reds that day. You see, this was the second game of a doubleheader and the Reds were facing Braves' left-hander, George Stone. Sparky wanted to load his lineup with right-handed bats, including the one he penciled in at center. Sparky didn't want to sacrifice the big right-hand bats of the Big Bopper, Lee May at first or Tony Perez at third. Besides, the young, athletic 22 year-old jumped at the chance to play the position where his boyhood idol, Mickey Mantle, played for the Yankees.

The young Red homered that day and fielded his position flawlessly, recording two putouts along the way. As the gamed progressed to the ninth inning Sparky inserted Reds' regular center fielder, the left-handed hitting Bobby Tolan in to play center and the young Red who started at center that day was moved to his more familiar position. Who was the player who started at center field the day Hank Aaron joined Stan Musial as the only two living members of the 3,000 hit club?

Well, this strapping young lad went on to become quite adept at using his glove. Just not at center field. When his career was over, he had won 10 Gold Gloves, appeared in 14 All-Star games, won two league MVP's and earned two World Series rings with the Big Red Machine.

The 22-year old kid who started at Center Field on May 17, 1970 was none other than Mickey Mantle's fellow Oklahoman, the kid from Binger, Oklahoma...

As a baseball purist, and I'm as pure as you will find when it comes to baseball, this i one area that needs to be addressed. There are a bunch of umpires who are just woefully bad at making consistent ball/strike calls. It pains me to have to say it but I see no real choice but to address the problem with technology.
