Best lineup of the year for the Reds. Imagine Solano in for Moose.

India
Naquin
Stephenson
Votto
Drury
Pham
Farmer
Moose
Senzel

is what I would do with those 9. Pham must have signed with a clause that said he had to bat 3rd. Just doesn't make sense with all the other bats.

The Cincinnati Reds have their full-strength starting lineup for the first time since their first home game of the season.

Joey Votto is back in the lineup, and the Reds’ starting nine is at full strength.

didn't even realize the AL sucked this year. i suppose the reds sweeping the rays should have been my first clue.

According to SRS the Yankees are easily the best team in MLB with a 2.1 and behind them are the Dodgers at 1.4 and Houston at 1.2. Every other team in under 1. Four of the Yankees 5 SP are out pitching their FIP by at least 0.4 so that could normalize for some regression.

Friday night, we won a game on a rare "balk" off. I'll take a win any way we can get it. I would have even settled for a walk off catcher's interference. How rare is that? So rare, that it's happened only one time in history. How do I know it happened? Because I remember the game. It made me angry. Stay tuned on why the ending some 50+ years ago upset me so much in today's edition of THE REST OF THE STORY .

****THE REST OF THE STORY *****

The other night against the Rays when the Reds loaded the bases, I wouldn't have put any money on the outcome being a "balk off" win, seeing as that had happened less than a couple dozen times in history. For some odd reason , however, I did kinda think about a walk off catcher's interference(something we have benefited from a number of times this season). As rare as a walk off balk is, a walk off catcher's interference is rarer than rare. So rare, in fact, that it has only happened one time in the history of baseball. Not only do I know it happened once, I REMEMBER it happening. I was listening to the game when it happened and I was pissed for a week afterwards(as pissed as an eight-year old boy can be, anyways).

It happened on August 1, 1971 , only 19 days from the time I would attend my first ever Major League baseball game at RIverfront Stadium to see my beloved Cincinnati Reds play Pittsburgh. I had been saving up money for the 170 mile trip to Cincinnati for several weeks. I had saved $32 and change and kept it tucked away in one of my pawpaw's old King Edward Cigar boxes.

Now, back to August 1. It was Dodger Stadium. Final game of a three-game set with a NL West rival. The Dodgers were my most-hated team. Anytime they lost a game it brought a smile to my face. Unfortunately, they had won the first two games of this series and were looking for a sweep. The Dodgers started Bill Singer, who had pitched eight solid innings , giving up just a run on five hits. The Dodgers took a 3-1 lead into the ninth but Jim Brewer blew the save chance and the game proceeded to extra innings. The Dodgers gave up the lead in the top of the 11th on a solo homerun but in the bottom of the inning they would mount a rally, mostly on walks, errors, and a hit batsman. Here's how the game played out, along with one of the oddest endings in baseball history.

A pitcher by the name of Joe Gibbon came on in relief to try to nail down the win for the visitors in the bottom of the 11th. Two pinch hitters began the inning. Gibbon gave up a single to Joe Ferguson, then Wes Parker attempted to sacrifice Ferguson to second. Gibbon misplayed the bunt and threw late to first for an error. After a wild pitched moved both runners up, Maury Wills struck out for the first out of the inning. Gibbon then intentionally walked Manny Mota to set up the possible double play that would end the game. However, Gibbon hit Dodger RF Bill Buckner to force in the tying run. Dick Allen was up next and Gibbon got him to ground to the shortstop, who threw home to force out Parker at the plate.

With the bases still loaded and now two outs in the tie game, Willie Crawford was at the plate for the Dodgers. Gibbon was still on the mound. Either Manny Mota on third thought Gibbon wasn't paying enough attention to him or else Mota thought Crawford had little chance of getting a two-out hit because Mota took off for home plate as Gibbon winded up and delivered the pitch. The catcher, seeing Mota racing for home, pounced out in front of the plate to tag Mota. Just one problem, he left too soon and his catcher's mitt made contact with Crawford's bat. The home plate umpire ruled interference on the catcher, allowing Mota to score , and giving the Dodgers the bizarre 5-4 win , the only documented play in Major League history where a game ended as a result of catcher's interference.

Why was I so bent out of shape over this turn of events? Well, as you may have guessed by now Joe Gibbon was pitching for my Cincinnati Reds, the team I was looking forward to watching for the first time live in just three weeks. And the catcher who was responsible for the only walk off catcher's interference in the history of our great game? He went on to win ten Gold Gloves and appear in 14 All Star games and is considered by most baseball experts as the greatest all-around catcher in the history of the game.
.
.
.
.
.
.

The young catcher whose mitt made contact with Willie Crawford's bat that day in Los Angeles was none other than our very own Hall of Fame catcher, the great JOHNNY BENCH !!!!

And NOW you know..... THE REST ...OF THE STORY !!!!

You can't get a hitter out by missing his bat unless he already he already has 2 strikes! You CAN get a lot of outs with none or one strike by the bats mis-hitting the ball, and way more pitch efficiently.

Great AB by India. Wandy nearly steals a spectacular save from the jaws of a blown save, but he doesn't get it! Now let's see if a Red's reliever can handle the pressure of Yankee Stadium for a save! Only decision Wandy can get is a vulture win!

I was kinda like that. Saw some of the early game, then went to Netflix until the last few innings. Started to read while watching the game with the sound off, then saw the action in the ninth, was going good but I had to floss my teeth, so no reason to leave the sound off. Force at hone, force at home, oh well… then India comes through! Now I’m up celebrating. One win is already success in this series in the Bronx.

Reds were +335 before first pitch… that means the reds have a 23% chance to win… before a pitch is thrown… the. They were down 3-0 in the 9th.

To quote Leela:

“This is by a wide margin the least likely thing that has ever happened.”

mhs95_06

If I were Bell, I would have challenged the first force out at home in the 9th. Looked to me like, in the only view I saw, that the ball was not under control in the catchers glove and was moving out as he was bringing the glove up for the transfer to his bare hand. Then it popped our for an instant and was quickly secured by the bare and and an incriminating tag was attempted late.

cobike

I don’t think it’s been pointed out yet, but Cole can’t win against the Reds. 1-8 career. Of course he dominated tonight, but they have his number!

Well if he had, he would have lost it thus he wouldn’t have had a challenge on the game-ending DP and the Yankees would have had another chance.

Reds winning tomorrow is much more probable than winning down 4-0 in the 9th against Holmes.

With my schedule, I had duty tonight and couldn't watch. Bad storms her tonight, but i had DVR'd the game. In listening the game I thought, I'd just erase it but I got home n the 9th in the 9th innings, so I watched. This ownership tried to emasculate this team, but it's not to be. Of course they will try to do it again at the trade deadline, but tonight our kids came through. It was glorious on this night.

A lot of players on the Reds called it the best victory of the season. Since starting the season 3-22, Cincinnati has played respectable baseball, going 30-32 since then and riding a five-game winning streak.

If they were down 4-0, who knows if they'd won?

I think Aaron Boone did a horrible job managing the 9th. He left Holmes in there way too long. It was obvious to even a casual fan that he didn't have it. It was a no brainer to pull him
