Reds usually have good success against Wainwright. So maybe the quasi 2nd half will get off to a good start.

Looks like all the games are free on MLBTV. They usually have a free week after the ASG.

I didn't watch the ASG(or even read about it). Did Luis get in the game? I haven't watch an ASG probably in a couple of decades. When I was a kid I would have missed one of my granny's home cooked meals before I would have missed the midseason classic. Always pulled for the NL and the six or seven Redlegs who were on the team about every year.

I didn't mean that these injuries are his fault or because he's doing something wrong. But similar to Senzel, he seems to be cursed at finding ways to get hurt. At some point, you have to wonder (in both cases) if their bodies are best preserved at another position.

I've had that happen when I was younger. Luckily I didn't break it, but I couldn't move my arm for days. The fact that that came in about 30 mph faster makes me less than optimistic he avoided a season-ending injury. Sucks.

At this point, I'd probably just plan on having him share DH with Votto next season.

Partially torn labrum or low-grade separation or crack in the collarbone.

Hopefully, no surgery, just a couple of months rest. So, yes. Out for the season probably. You'd think he'd even welcome a change to a less physical position as Catcher. He hasn't even been able to focus on his hitting for a long time.

I don't like the Senzel comparison either. Senzel tends to have goofy, mysterious injuries that keep him out way longer than you think should. Stephenson had his thumb blew up and came back in a month.

I think at this point I prefer a Ryan Hanigan type catcher. Defense first, great pitch caller, an 8-hole hitter. Maybe Logan Tanner, the recent pick from Mississippi State, can be something like that.

I have a theory that most umps would prefer a computer to call the balls and strikes. They would never admit it, but just think how much easier it would make their jobs. No more grief from fans and writers would be a welcome change. I guarantee they wouldn't be taking any pay cut over it either. They keep making bad calls on purpose to force the issue.

I respect that, but see it differently. Baseball has more than enough strikeouts. Umpires should not freely expand the zone.

And it’s not fair to hitters trying to be appropriately selective at the plate.

My theory is a bigger strike zone leads to more swinging and more contact, less guys swinging out of their shoes every pitch and less shifting. But you're right, it might be the complete opposite.

Not moving Stephenson because of a couple of freak injuries. Not maybe until Joey retires. How many catchers have that many back there. 1st one was because he dived into a Rhino at HP. The other because he didn’t have his hand behind him. This one can happen to any catcher. I would use him at DH more.

Probably time to stop playing him at C.

Votto's not likely to hit above .700 OPS again in his life, not this year, not ever. You can't have your starting 1st Baseman under .850, yet alone under .700, even if the name of the team was the Joey Votto REDS.

Stephenson's bat is too valuable to not be in the lineup every day, even if he never got injured. Just playing C is going to make him miss 50 games per year.

i will say this: there is no doubt tyler stephenson is tough as hell. he's a tough dude. but some guys are injury prone more than others. i'll just be honest: i've seen some plays where he got hurt where i was like "didn't look that bad, but ok, it happens."

but now that has happened many times. "minor" looking injuries that take him out of the game, or out of the lineup for weeks.

just an observation. i'm sure i'll get skewered for it. that's fine. i'm as big of a tyler stephenson fan as you will find and i'm just concerned that while he's tough (and awesome at baseball) he might be one of those guys who is just injury prone. obviously i hope i am wrong, other than the "awesome at baseball" and "tough as hell" parts.

You can’t become one of MLB’s best catchers in the trainer’s room or in the hospital.

Bench’s team had no DH. He had Perez at first. Not so for Tyler. He can DH. He can split first base/DH with an aging Votto. Might help Joey too.

The most important thing is prolonging Tyler’s career. The second is getting him a full compliment of at bats.
