Bill Russell's family has reported that he has died, age 88.
I am not much of a basketball or NBA fan, but I can respect Russell's greatness. Two time NCAA basketball champion, in 13 seasons in the NBA Russell's Celtics won 11 championships, including 8 in a row. The final two NBA titles came with Russell also serving as coach of the Celtics. Both an outspoken civil rights advocate and possessor of a remarkable infectious laugh, combining integrity, intelligence and good humor, he was remarkable. A legend. R.I.P.

Bill Russell may have been the the prolific winner of any one in team sports history. He won state championships in high school, two NCAA Championships at San Francisco, including 55 straight wins, A gold medal in the 1956 Olympics and 11 NBA Championships. The last two of those was as a player coach. He also did much for racial equality during a very turbulent time in America's history. I remember him as an analyst on CBS broadcast of NBA games. I always thought he very good at that. Not too many like him have come along. RIP Bill Russell.

Most amazing part is being perhaps the winningest team sports player ever probably is only the third paragraph in a proper obituary of the man. The door he opened as a player-coach and then a coach-GM was massive, and often gets overlooked.

The doors he was willing to step through-- and occasionally smash down or shine a light on-- should be in that opening paragraph.
What a remarkable life.

Ditto.
He actually lived a remarkably long life for a big man. Such physical stature does not usually lead to a life that spans nearly 90 yrs
