On Tuesday, following the conclusion of the MLB trade deadline, the Reds announced they acquired an 11-year veteran at the position.

The Reds acquired catcher Austin Romine from the St. Louis Cardinals. Romine was recently designated for assignment, and he has played for both the Cardinals and the Los Angeles Angels this season.

Romine is a career .236 hitter, and he has a .176 batting average in 37 big league plate appearances this season. Between 2013 and 2019, Romine was a regular on the New York Yankees, posting a .247 batting average during that span. Since then, he has bounced between five different organizations.

Romine, 33, fills an immediate need for the Reds. Stephenson is out until late September with a broken collarbone. Backup catcher Aramis Garcia is progressing slowly from a finger injury.

Romine provides a veteran presence for an extremely inexperienced starting rotation, including Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo and Graham Ashcraft.

He was a local kid that did not get much attention being recruited out of high school......good fielder but a below average bat. One day late in his Sophomore season he challenged the pitchers....claiming he could throw it harder than they could....and throw for strikes. He was right....and immediately moved to pitcher. Did well at Stetson and had a decent MLB career. The backup infielder was Jacob deGrom. :)

I think with a couple of moves I can see a competitive team in the NL Central next year. They should have money to build around a young core. A lot will depend how someplay to finish the year. Need some relievers to step up.
FA two SP each around 10M (Kluber/Cueto type of deals)
Get two FA relievers 5M each range(givens types)
Get a OF in 10M range (Pham type)
Couple of Vets (Solano/Drury types)

As has been mentioned, these three rookies along with Castillo and Mahle could have won a lot of games next year, too bad we don’t have ownership that wants to try to win every year. Yea, I know small market team and all but I heard today that San Diego is the 27th largest market and we know what they did today. The value of the franchise is where the money is, regardless of profit or loss in a year, the franchise would be much more valuable if they would be winners.

Of course, all 3 this time were rookies. This is the first time since at least 1906 that the Reds have had rookies start 3 consecutive games of 6+ IP and 1 run or fewer allowed. The last time any team had 3 such starts was the Braves on 9/29-10/1/2015.

You're such a sunshine pumper! LOL (j/k) There's still something they need to do and that is DMFA (Designate Moose for Assignment), preferably to "parts unknown." Best to just forget the whole miserable Moose experiment. Something tells me , though, that we'll see a lot of him next season. Moose has just a few more than a hundred total hits in, this, his third campaign with the Reds. Brandon Drury had the same number of homeruns in a half season here than Moose has had in his entire time in Cincinnati. Time to move on from him. Bet it doesn't happen, though.

You're probably right, Klu. Playing out of position has obviously affected his play. LOL Maybe they'll play him some at second where he belongs. :)

Left side defense of Farmer at 3B and Barrero at SS would certainly help a young pitching staff over final 59 games.

What a novel concept, right? A pitcher can actually pitch into the 8th and 9th. AMAZING! What an incredible revelation!
