Gonna be tough for me to be bullish on Ashcraft until such time as he learns how to miss bats. With his pitch arsenal, he should easily have more than 49 k’s jn 76 IP.

Burnes pitched Barraro exactly how Welsh said he should, nothing but sliders down and away, and he K’d on three pitches.

After showing what he can do with a couple of fastballs yesterday, he had to go into this game knowing the slider diet was only going become more acute (or at least he should have).

I can give the guy a break for the execution, it was Corbin Burns after all, but the approach is hard to get past.

Which begs the question, in my mind, of where is the coaching? I'd tell a guy like him that I don't care if he K's 4 times today looking. I don't care if you are late on fastballs because of it but we are going to work on situational awareness and pitch recognition.

"Trust me, this first pitch will be a slider....don't swing at it. If they get you on a fastball it's my fault, not yours"..type of thing.

If the Reds are truly in a rebuilding mode and looking to develop their so-called "pipeline" of talent, then why don't they just let Moustakas go. Injuries and old age have robbed him of his talent. The Reds have many others who should be getting Moose's playing time.

Reds also have a $4 million option buyout to pay Moose for 2024.

It’s a lot of money. My guess is they keep using Moose and hoping he has a better hitting month at some point. Then try and get some measure of salary relief in a trade. It’s a longshot, but no benefit to cutting him except a roster spot.

I agree. They gave up the money before Covid, it's now just a matter of making the payments that you agree to and was a bust. Utilize the roster spot for someone who may be able to bloom to aid the cause in 2023 and beyond.

The Reds have lots of good prospects but not many are ready for the major leagues.

I’m not sure they lack roster spots for anyone they care to bring up.

At some point they may have a roster crunch and they would have to consider whether Moose should be cut.

The forty man roster, yes, during the off-season. But Reds will have many openings on that roster, that won’t force a move with an expensive player like Moustakas.

This is the manager that is going to be leading the wave of new players correct?

The guy who looks at Farmer. Sees himself and the chances hustling players with average talent like him don’t get and over play them. It worked out in that case ok.

But this is the manager they are going to trust to make in game decisions. Who will go with a vet who is not very good over an unknown.
Granted Diaz had 2 outs. 2 strikes. Then it took him another 12 pitches to finish the 8th. So that was on him.

But come on if he doesn’t already deserve the chance to close.

Unearned, doesn’t hurt the statline. And it removes any distraction from the basepaths to start the inning.

I have zero confidence whenever Bell brings in Strickland to close out a game. He now has four blown saves and an ERA approaching 6 runs per game. Those stats alone prove he is not a closer. If anything, Strickland should be considered a mop up guy who only comes in when a game is out of hand with the Reds either well ahead or far behind. Today's blown save also reinforces my belief like many others on this thread that David Bell cannot manage a bullpen. Diaz should be given the closer's role, period, no discussion.

I was wondering with that Strickland inning if still using him isn't some sort of 3D Chess move from management. Like you get the team to play hard for 8 innings with situational relievers and all but then just throw this putz who won't be around next year to lose the game so you can go "ah darn, well too bad but I guess that helps with our tanking."

But then the Reds won anyway so maybe they are doing a Major League thing themselves.

I'm not predicting that Alexis Diaz can be another Mariano Rivera, but Rivera averaged 58 appearances per season over a 19-year career and collected a ML record 652 saves and won 82 games. If the Reds are ever going to be a championship caliber organization they need to have a dependable closer who can help them win games, and to me that means Diaz needs to be the closer.
