I looked up Chuckie Robinson to see if he had ever played in an MLB game. Through last season he had not. Unless he has played for someone this year then he could be another Moonlight Graham. He could appear in the 9th and catch one inning but not bat. I assume he will be sent back to Louisville after tonight. Then there is a chance he is never in another MLB game. Cue Twighlight Zone music........

The ghost players that were the 2022 Reds and Cubs all season are part of heaven and Iowa for a day.

Does any team deserve to be here more than the Reds? They won that disputed 1919 World Series, but are treated like extras in a Black Sox screenplay.

“I don’t know whether the whole truth of what went on there among the White Sox will ever come out. ... Whatever it was, though, it was a dirty rotten shame,” Reds Hall of Fame outfielder Edd Roush said in “The Glory of Their Times,” a masterpiece of a baseball book published in 1966. “One thing that’s always overlooked in the whole mess is that we could have beat them no matter what the circumstances! Sure, the 1919 White Sox were good. But the 1919 Cincinnati Reds were better. I’ll believe that till my dying day.”

The Cubs? They belong here, too. They play a couple of hundred miles or so from Dyersville and remain one of baseball’s top attractions.

This is a real game but this is more than just a game. There are plenty of chances to see contenders. This is about the glory of the game and the joy of the movie. This also is about money, but so what? We keep hearing baseball is a business, but it can be fun, too.

Fun does not always need to be about the won-lost record. I forget that sometimes. This Field of Dreams and “Field of Dreams” remind me to look for the fun in the moment.

Also if he gets into a game, he will be the ninth (!!!!!) player from the 2020 MiLB Rule 5 Draft (Note, I'm taking about the MiLB phase, not MLB) to play in the majors.

That's why I love baseball.

Used to love to go to the ballpark in downtown Portland (screw all Timbers fans and the franchise) and just sit and watch baseball whether it was the Minor League Mavericks with Kurt Russell, AAA baseball as a Pirates or Twins affiliate, or Single-A affiliate of the Padres. Sometimes during day games I'd sit next to Vince Pesky and we'd chat for hours, but mostly him telling me stories. He played with his brother on the Red Sox in the 40's and in Silverton in the 30's. He celebrated his 100th birthday just a little bit ago. Sat next to Kevin Towers one game. That was cool.

When I lived in the Bay Area (the only time I saw Johnny Bench in person in '83, but he wouldn't give me his autograph, but that's fine, though I was on crutches after a high-ankle sprain just 8 days earlier), anyway, when I lived in the Bay Area I probably skipped work at least a dozen times to go to day games and just soak up the Sun and watch baseball both A's and Giants. Giants had more day games, though.

The opening with KGJ and Sr coming out and passing….teared me up. Tomorrow morning we take our son off to his freshman year of college.

Bench is so sharp…steals the show. Smoltz just sees and knows so much about the game. Votto was gold. To me that’s what Joey is so elite at. So calculated and deep with his thoughts. As a baseball fan he’s so interesting. He had a long inning to cover a lot.i enjoyed it. Happ had 90 seconds and Reds out quick lol.

Me, too. That's one of those opportunities that we've been talking about the last week. Here's a player who wouldn't cost a ton, but the results seem pretty reliable. A perfect fit anywhere in the lineup for 2023/24 as players are being added to the roster from the Minors. Let him develop a little emotionally with the younger guys and help to teach them. You can't have all young guys and you can't have Veterans who can't hit.

I know it's hard to stay positive, but that's the opposite of what they have done this year with RISP. They have been excellent. It's the relief pitching that's horrible and the Starters' ERA's.
