View Full Version : 2022 Weekly College Football Pick'em
A new season is coming upon us, and I'm throwing out this suggestion to those who have participated in the past. Before, we played two "divisions" ... The B1G, where we'd weekly play their entire conference schedule, and Other National Games (ONG), where we'd play approximately 12 national games, selections from the remaining conferences. All-in-all, we'd play approximately 25 games total weekly.
This season I was thinking about eliminating the "divisions", and just playing a straight 20 games. And I would select games, as best I could, from all the available conferences, based on match-ups, competiveness, and level of competion. This way I can be more "selective" in chosing competitive games to fill out the schedule, while not being obligated to playing one conference's entire schedule (B1G).
And yes, we will be playing point spreads. I will be adding .5 to whole number spreads to insure no ties.
So give me your input. The first week, as far as scheduling goes, is one hectic mess. So bare with me. There is an abbreviated schedule for Week #1 (Aug 27th) approximately 12 games. I'm going to start our Week #1 on Thursday Sept. 1st thru Saturday Sept 3rd. That's a full slate of games (lol).
As is my routine in the past, I will have the schedule, for the upcoming week, posted every Monday. That way people have the entire week, right up to game time, to get their picks in. And I usually have the results posted (standings) sometimes on Sunday (day after games).
This is all about having fun. A bunch of us have been doing this for several years now. I think the only other rule we have is that you must play the entire weekly schedule. While we all try to keep an eye on one another, help each other out, if you miss making a pick for a game(s) it goes down as a loss. So review your weekly picks before submitting them. But again, we're not legalists here. If you want to make a change, as long as it's before game time, post it on here and let us know. But again. This is all about having soime fun.
So give me your ideas or suggestions if you have any.
I'll have Week #1 posted on Monday August 29th.

Thanks GAC. I think that is a good idea about having just 20 games from anywhere. Just way too many bad games with teams playing FCS teams or lower. Its hard enough finding 20 decent games most any week of the season. Starting week 1 Labor Day weekend is the best option. Not that many games the weekend of Aug 27th. Only one or two that may be a decent game also.

Problem is there are too many blowout games in the Big Ten on any given week. Even with point spreads, no one's going to pick Arkansas St to beat OSU so even if there's an upset it doesn't separate the crowd here

"Every conference" is not part of the discussion because no other conference is completely included every week. You are correct that every conference has blowout games every week.

I say lets try them all together.....then maybe my absolute embarrassing performance with Big10 games will not stick out so much.

That was my point. If you commit yourself to playing any conference's entire weekly schedule you're gonna get the ugly, and quite regularly. I'm simply eliminating that. I don't care if we're talking about OSU or 'Bama or whoever ... when they're playing "Murray State Technical College", and the point spread is 50+?... they ain't gonna be on the schedule that week (lol). And I don't think anyone who participates (unless they're an alumni) cares to ever have, for example, a Rutgers or a Vandebilt game on the schedule. lol
This has always been strictly for fun. But since we're going to play 20 games weekly (last year, between B1G and ONG we played 25-30 games) I want there to be a little more "competiveness" in the schedule on a week-to-week basis. We'll see how it goes.
I'm getting Week #1 out as early as possible. In the future I won't be putting Thursday games on the schedule. Please be patient, as we all know the first week or so of the season it's lean finding quality match-ups. So I'll probably throw some games in to fill out the schedule that won't be my normal pattern (lol). But hey! The college football season is upon us! :thumbup:

I was so busy trying to find quality matchups - after about 8-9 games too :lol: - I wasn't even thinking what I was doing. No. Every game won't be a point spread game moving forward. I normally don't put PS's on anything under a TD. So if you want to take the time and remove the PS's on anything under a TD that's cool. Thanks cumberland.

Yes, the site is "based" in Cincinnati, Ohio. But the majority of the membership is pretty diversified as far as location goes, and spread all over the country. The only common bond we all share is that we are Red's fans. That's why this forum was created 20+ years ago. But that's where it ends. This forum has grown far beyond being simply a Ohio sports board. The Tavern forum was created for ALL other, non-baseball related, sports discussion.
But the bottomline is, as far as weekly scheduling goes, I want competitive games/matchups. I'm not going to schedule any team, regardless of who they are, when they're playing a cupcake opponent with a point spread of 40+ points. There are a lot of big schools I left off in week #1 - and some who participate are fans of those schools - because they're simply going to blow that opponent out.

Looked like another Scott Frost-led team yesterday. Once again the turnovers (3) haunt them. As well as erratic play from their QB. It's like they totally lost their will to fight in the 4Q. Last year, both these schools were 3-9. I can somewhat expect that from Northwestern who has pretty much been close to a bottom-tier team in the B1G (with exceptions); but not a program like Nebraska. And I like, and deeply respect, NU's headcoach Fitzgerald. IMO, he's a class act. And I'm somewhat of a fan of the Wildcats because one of my close friend's nephew was a starting defensive back for the Wildcats several years back. It was fun watching him.
NU's problem has been generating offense. They may have found their QB with Gamecock transfer Hilinski.

Iowa looks terrible against South Dakota State. 5-3 Hawkeyes with about 3 minutes left in the third quarter.

That was a fun Saturday of football. What a weekend of upsets. There was no way I wasn't going to put that App State- Texas A&M game not on the schedule (not wth App State's history). And the same thing with Marshall-ND (lol). There were 13 point spread games, and 6 teams (giving points) lost.
Kilgore-Trout put up the best record this week @ 12-7. We shall not give mention to those who "fell short". ;)
And though I did not have it on the schedule, what idiot put Nebraska as a three TD favorite over anyone??? Frost has to be toast! Your defense gave up 642 total yards dude! He's probably hoping he gets fired before facing off vs Oklahoma next week. But his contract buyout drops from $15 million to $7.5 million on Oct. 1, so they'll probably keep him around till then.

Everybody had an above .500 week, except for two of us. ;)
I was very much impressed with Penn State after that Auburn game. Was bouncing around the channels watching games, and (imo), it was kind of a boring day of watching football (as far as quality goes). I don't spend one minute watching P5 schools trounce smaller schools (lol), though impressive upsets for S.Florida and Liberty :eek:
I'm retired, so I spend maybe more time "researching " these games as a hobby. But has anyone done any research on the researchers, those "experts" whose advice we rely on so much (lol)? They're winning % isn't much better then ours. They just dress snazzier (lol). Plus. I think it's hard to really gauge how good/bad a team is in these early going-ons because of the level of competition they're facing, and teams padding their stats.

I’m very half-assed about my picks. I go on my memory of teams (now fading), their rank, and any highlights or pieces of games I may have stumbled across. Mix in lots of knee jerk and gut feel. The game that caught me by surprise was the BYU-Oregon game. The Ducks looked really bad against Georgia and BYU always seem to overachieve so I picked them. I watched the first quarter of that game and Oregon was clearly the better team that night.

Some really good games yesterday, regardless of our results (lol). I was going back n forth through numerous games. I was impressed with The Terp's performance at Michigan. Harbaugh can't be too happy. Not that Maryland is not an improved team. I was somewhat surprised at the Georgia-Kent State and Ole Miss-Tulsa games too.
And once again the "little guy" (Middle Tenn) sticks it to the big guy (lol).

This year would have to drive full time sports gamblers crazy. Sure, we have 3 elite teams.....a bunch of good teams, etc. just like other years. The difference this year is it seems like you never know which team is taking the field that day until the ball is kicked off.....and that includes the elite teams. A team like Kansas State loses to Tulane at home one week, then rolls into Norman and clearly handles Oklahoma! Who saw Kent State putting up a fight against Georgia? While I expect Bama, UGA and Ohio State to be there at the end.....it looks like trying to bet with the spread each week could be a rough road.

Have you ever looked at the winning % of these so-called "experts" we listen to? Ain't much better then ours. They're just good at presentation and BS'ing you that they're more knowledgeable. They're not because we all now have access to that same data/stats. And we're no better at it either. LOL

Not quite sure what you mean, but I'll give it a shot (lol). Both. On the games with no point spread you're simply picking who you think will win (straight up). On the games with point spreads, the spread will determine who wins. For example, this week .... Texas A&M @ #1 Alabama (-24.5). 'Bama is giving A&M 24.5 pts. I took A&M because even though I think 'Bama will win, they won't make that 24.5 spread. For Alabama to win, they would have to beat them by 25 points (or higher).
I usually don't use point spreads if they are a TD or under. Gives us amateurs a fighting chance (lol).
Does that make any sense?

Makes total sense and answers my question exactly. It’s what I figured but wanted to verify.
I’m not a gambling guy and never got into point spreads and all that so some of the terminology was unfamiliar. Thanks Greg.

A majority of us did a lot better this week. Myself and Kilgore-Trout tied at 14-6. Everyone finished .500 or above this week, except two.
Three teams won, but didn't make the spread ... Alabama, Michigan, and Oklahoma State. There were three upsets - Kentucky, Utah, and BYU. Two games were decided by .5. So if you took Michigan or Oklahoma State, you lost (lol).

Nuclear physics is easier than picking games...
Forgive me guys. IMO, this has been the worst week by far this season, when it came to scheduling games. A lot of byes this week. I think I got about 11 good games, and after that I was tossing them in there. So bad I had to put Oklahoma and Nebraska on the schedule (lol) and Oklahoma is giving Kansas points! I'm continuing with no point spreads under a TD (7).

Thanks Roy. My goal every week is to pick matchups that are competitive. Even when point spreads are involved. We use to play with no point spreads, just straight up; but it made it too easy with players having over .600 win % (lol). Over time we gradually added a point spread game until we got to where we are now. Point spreads do help to "even things" out to some degree.

the Florida-Georgia game, and the Michigan-Michigan State game, had Georgia and Michigan giving their opponent 22.5 points. Both lost by .5 point ;)

I never paid a lot of attention to the point spreads. Vegas is awfully good at figuring these out.
And like baseball, gambling is worming it’s way into the game. Even the OSU-Penn State tv announcer mentioned how that late PSU touchdown made the margin less than the spread. Things like that happen and I say hmmmm.

Only one favored team won the game, but didn't make the spread ... TCU, who lost by .5 (lol). There were 7 upsets this week ... #5 Clemson (ND), #6 Alabama (LSU), #13 Kansas State (Texas), #18 Oklahoma State (Kansas), Arkansas (Liberty), Miss State, and Boise State.
IMO. What Georgia, and their defense, did to the Vols yesterday - also giving due credit to QB Stetson - they look unstoppable IMO. I think they'd kill OSU or Michigan. LOL

Yea I didn't know that. I was out doing yardwork at that time Saturday. Then I watched Kentucky's game off the DVR.

Weather was the key factor in that game. Terrible.
I don't think there's that many B10 particpating. I just try to follow the general "rule" of trying to play competitive games as best possible, and, IMO, a 40 pt spread is just too much. That's a cupcake game IMO. I don't care who the team or conference is. I've stuck to that all year, but this week I was kind of scratching for games (lol).

I'd have to say that Week #11 was the best week overall this season for most of us. One under .500, and one at .500, the rest above .500.
Only one game where the favored team won, but didn't make the spread - Alabama. Ohio State squeaked by at .5 (lol). There were two upsets, and they were both in the PAC-12 - Oregon (Washington) and UCLA (Arizona).
As far as this week's rankings (IMO) ... Oregon drops out of the Top 10. LSU stays, but drops a position or two for the lackluster win over an unranked (bad) Arkansas team. USC, 'Bama, and Clemson edge up ... but who moves up and takes that #10 spot? #11 and #12 both lost. Does Utah take the #10 spot, and Penn State #11?

I've come to realize, at this point in the season, that when it comes to the PAC12 and B12, their point spreads, on average each week, are pretty small intra-conference (lol). For example ... #4 TCU is playing unranked 6-4 Baylor, and the pt spread is 2.
