Sept. 6: OF Nick Senzel scratched from lineup Tuesday
Less than two hours before first pitch, the Reds scratched Senzel with a right ankle sprain. It was not immediately known how the center fielder's injury occurred. He was replaced in the batting order by Albert Almora Jr.

Miley ripped thru the the bottom 4 in the order and then got India for a run of 5 in a row to end the 2nd. He'd be throwing a shut-out if it weren't for the error and the weird hop triple.

His plate appearances show an improvement on his part. He's only swung at one pitch outside the strike zone through 3 PA's and has swung at every pitch in the strike zone.

Much more patience, and a better eye on the pitch. Not guessing.

Nothing in Warren's past showed that he would pitch like he has this season, but everything he could possibly do wrong, he's doing it. I question our Pitching Coach. I question heavily if he doesn't really suck. That's a question best answered by those closer to the situation who live in the area and have a better feel for all that goes into what a pitching coach contributes and doesn't.

What is so scary is that when Dunn left the game, Pitchers with ERA's of 4.520, 7.04, 6.50, and 5.29 followed. Bullpen (so far) has gone 2.1 innings, allowed 4 hits, 5 ER, gave up 7 ER, Walked 7 and struck out 3. What's worse, is that's all we have so this happens over and over.

What is the general opinion of the REDS' pitching coach?

Since according to some management doesn't make any real difference, he'll likely not go anywhere. But I think he needs to. I can not be the only person who's noticed on many an occasion that a pitcher comes in and just isn't ready to go to work. There doesn't seem to be much accountability.

He's not the problem.

I'm asking because the Mariners have added Relief Pitchers for this season, all of whom are pitching much better and pitching differently than they did before they became a Mariner. It's staff-wide. It has to make a difference who the pitching Coach is. Art Warren can't be this bad.

I disagree. Warren was a 28 Y/O minor league journeyman who could never stick in the big leagues. The Reds handed him a significant role based on 25 innings. Other than that, his entire career has been riding teh shuttle between the minors and the majors. If that's the career at that age, I'd say everything about that career says he was going to be awful. You get minor league talent and stick on aq bog league roster, these are exactly the results that should be expected.

Its why I don't buy any of the small sample successes some of these other 30ish players who could never stick might be having. Buck Farmer 2023 will likely be the repeat of Art Warren 2022. Go get some real big leaguers.

The thing I've always felt with Relievers, and this goes back to before Sparky Anderson, is that you throw them out there and see if they stick. At best, you get 2-1/2 years of quality Relief. Relievers will ride a short sample size of success for years and too many teams are willing to chase old results.

If a Reliever isn't getting it done, replace him. Don't chase previous results. There are in-season ups and downs, but I'm talking about Relievers who fail from the beginning of the season through the middle of the season and you're waiting for results from a previous season. That, to me, is folly. Move on. It's also why I would never invest heavily in Relievers It's not a good return per PA for the dollar spent. Volume and a willingness to move on to someone else would be my yearly approach. The Pitching Coach is highly responsible for putting together what the team wants out of the group and everyone needs to pitch towards that philosophy. The Manager then needs to be monitoring each Reliever on a daily basis and do his best to put each person into a situation that encourages growth and success. It's why a single move may not make sense at the time, but is meant to work out best in the long run for the entire group. But, to just throw someone out there "because it's his turn" or "because it's his inning" is plain stupid, especially when recent history reflects repeated failure. None of this works when you have Starters that can't go past five innings. There's just not enough rest available for the pen in these conditions. Ashcraft has been a blessing in this regard as it looks like he may be able to repeatedly go 7 innings. Greene needs to stop leaving pitches dead over the middle of the plate. Lodolo's progressing positively, but the team needs a Veteran next season that can go 6+ innings repeatedly, even if the ERA is at 5.00.
