One last go around before we put the bats and balls away for another winter. Even though its been a bad season its still sad to see another season go. Another mark in time for me as I grow older knowing the seasons I will experience are becoming fewer and fewer.

Thanks again Ron for all you did this season. You made a bad season much more enjoyable by posting these lineups everyday. Here's to a better 2023 season! :beerme:

Once Graham Ashcraft records his first out today, the Reds will have 3 first-year pitchers with over 100 IP.

That's something that has only happened 4 other times in MLB since 1949.

If Ashcraft can keep his ERA under 4.60, the Reds will be the first team with 3 first-year pitchers with 100+ IP and an ERA under 4.60 since the 1969 Expos.

I can be a melancholy day. It used to mean summer was over and fall was here. For quite a while, it also meant time to go back to school.

But since about 1995, it’s also a reminder that the Reds are a second rate club. They seem to approach being consistently good, but then drop back into a multi-year losing trench. Most of the time they seem to shoot themselves in the foot. Or a pandemic hits.

But here’s to looking forward to 2023. Maybe they’ll dhow some progress. My rational side says naaaaahhh, but my fan side gee maybe, you never know.

I say "ditto " to everything you said. Always sad to see a Reds' baseball season end, no matter how tough a season it was. I hope that guys like you, me, Ron, Mr. Tucker, Keefe, and others live to see at least one more Reds' deep dive into October for a championship run. Would love just one more title. Thanks again to all of those who contribute to the site and make it such a fun place to discuss Reds' baseball. GO REDLEGS!!!

Interesting fact about those 1969 Expos-- none of the three rookies had an ERA+ over 100 (indicated a league average starter). I'm not sure the last team to do that, if any.

The '68 Mets were really close-- Nolan Ryan had a 98 ERA+ his rookie season. Jerry Koosman and Jim McAndrew were both exceptional.

EDIT TO ADD: Doing the legwork, it looks like the 1944 Cincinnati Reds were the last team with three rookie starters to pitch 100 innings or more and enjoy an ERA+ of 100 or more.

27-year-old (and future MVP winner) Jim Konstanty, 32-year-old Tommy de la Cruz, and 26-year-old Arnold Carter were the last trio to do it.

Interestingly, it was de la Cruz's sole season in the big leagues and one of only two for Carter.

In the only 100+ loss season in Reds' history(up to this point) , the terrific Mario Soto was the losing pitcher in loss # 100. Mario ended the season with a sub 2.8 ERA and had 14 wins. Not bad for a team that had only 61 wins on the season.

Mario probably would have won 22 games that season had the team not been so anemic offensively.

Welsh told about how he became a Red in 1986. He was without a team the day before spring training. He ran into Pete Rose, and Pete asked him who he was playing for this season. Welsh told him no one. Pete said, now you do, come to the complex tomorrow and there will be a uniform with your name on it. Welsh came to the complex the next morning and there was a uniform with his name on it.

Welsh asked him if the GM was okay with this, and Rose told him, “I run this team, if I say you are on it, you are on it.”

I know we have a ton of holes on this team, but at the very least, assemble a decent bullpen. Reds fans, if you're trying to figure out for whom to root this postseason, here's a guide of former Reds on playoff teams' active rosters.

I'm only looking at people who had time with the Reds in the majors, not former Reds minor leaguers.

NL (games with Reds)
Braves: 749g • Adam Duvall, Raisel Iglesias, Jackson Stephens
Mets: 206g • Tyler Naquin, Mychal Givens
Phillies: 198g • Nick Castellanos
Padres: 166g • Brandon Drury, Brandon Dixon
Dodgers & Cardinals: 0 G • you shouldn't root for them.

AL (games with Reds)
Mariners:1633g • Eugenio Suarez, Jesse Winker, Curt Casali, Luis Castillo
Yankees:1169g • Aaron Boone, Aroldis Chapman, Wandy Peralta
Astros:509g • Dusty Baker (as mgr)
Guardians:102g • Terry Francona
Blue Jays:15g • Kevin Gausman
Rays:4g • Brooks Raley

I was hating that I was going to have to miss the lastt game if the season. But after seeing the score last night I am glad I didn't have set through this one. Gee...just a fitting way to go out this year. Just really disgusting and demoralizing at the same time to see this franchise to descend to the depths that it has. I really see no way out either unless totally new owners come in. I am afraid that isn't happening anytime soon.
