I know little about soccer but I do know Pele was considered its greatest player at one time. When the North American Soccer League was trying to get established way back when they were able to get Pele to come and play for the New York Cosmos. That was big news at that time. That league didn't work out but I'm sure he brought credibility to soccer in the US at a time when it was not taken seriously at all. RIP Pele.

The goal he scored in the 1958 WC vs Sweden is amazing

"Today, we are not working because we are going to watch Pele."
The iconic message outside the old Anda theatre in Guadalajara, Mexico, during the 1970 World Cup. 'Working gives people dignity, but watching Pele on the pitch brings even more dignity.'

I wanted to be Pele when I was a kid. I read biographies of him, learned to play with both feet, practiced bicycle kicks in the yard. RIP, King.

Watching highlights from his career on YouTube. Can't help but think the same thing as when I watch Joey at the bat: I'm not just watching a beautiful athlete at play, I'm watching a beautiful mind at work.
Saw Pele play when I was a kid. Not sure whether he or the King Tut exhibit was a bigger deal in the 70s.
