I can't imagine why the Bengals didn't designate Grier as one of their protected PS players
They would have also had the option of signing him to their full-time roster once the news is out that New England wants to offer him a regular season contract. Every team has that option with their practice squad guys. Nobody can just take someone from someone else's practice squad without the original team having the chance to at least offer him a place on their regular season roster first. I may be wrong, but it seems like I have heard this several times over the years.

A look at some QB situations around the league
Miami - Tua healthy and playing great. A big contract awaits
Jets - Wilson is playing better and now looks to hold serve till Rodgers returns
Patriots - Jones finally had a good game for 2-5 Pats. Had been stinking up the joint.
Baltimore - New OC Todd Monken has switched up Ravens offense and Jackson has thrived in it
Cleveland - Defense carrying the day as Watson bounces between mediocre and hurt.
Pittsburgh - Pickett has not taken the next step and continues to muddle thru
Cincinnati - Burrow has been surprisingly mediocre so far. For example he is the 27th ranked QB by QB rating
Houston - CJ Stroud is the early leader in the clubhouse for best QB in 2023 draft
Tennessee - Titans are punting on the season, selling off pieces, and now with Tannehill ailing looks like we'll get our first look at Levis
Indy - The always hurt Anthony Richardson is hurt and done for the season. He flashed at times but loses almost a year of development. Minshew the rest of the way.
Vegas - Garrapolo has been average
Denver - Wilson has been much better this year but team is hurting
Dallas - Has been just ok. But getting to the point where team has to start thinking about contract extension, and the contract was so backloaded they are almost trapped.
Washington - Team's been run of the mill, and so has Howell. Essentially a first year guy so you got to see what you have
Giants - Here's a shock. Daniel Jones is rated as the worst starting QB in the league. It was so idiotic giving this guy a 40 million dollar contract.
Minnesota - Same situation as Dallas. Almost contract time again, and team is so backloaded on Cousins.
Green Bay - First real look at Love and it's been just fair.
Chicago - Fields has been ok, but nothing special. Team 1-5 when he starts. He gets hurt and they turn to Bagent who is efficient game manager and he is now 1-0. They hold Carolina's #1 overall pick.
Atlanta -Mixed bag on Ridder. Some folks calling for Heinicke
Tampa Bay - Mayfield doing decent job on 8 million dollar deal. Here's how they'll screw this up. They'll sign him to $35 mill dollar a year deal. If 3 or 4 games from now they are still about .500, and he's doing ok, they should approach him with 3 year deal at $12 mill a piece. If he's not interested (and he probably won't be) transition to Trask and see what you have. Don't over pay for medicorce/average.
New Orleans - Carr as average as the day is long.
Carolina - Appears to to be the big loser in the 2023 draft. Coach apparently wanted Stroud, owner wanted Young, and now Young has been nothing. Dalton has outplayed Young. And they don't have their #1 pick in 2024 draft.
Cardinals - Dobbs holding court till Murray is ready. Teams in trouble. They hold #2 pick in draft.

Murray was activated today, making him eligible to play Sunday. He's been getting in full practices this week without any limitations. James Connor is going on three weeks this Sunday removed from his injury sustained in the Bengals' game. His estimation of missed time was 4-6 weeks.

Any chance they’re working on a trade? Is his contract traceable?
If not, did they activate him too early?

Titans have a real QB finally. They can move on from the previous sub-average and now ancient and damaged Tannehill. Titans should have kept Bayrd.

There's Kyler Murray who's healthy enough to throw the ball, and there's Kyler Murray who's healthy enough to run freely. They may be waiting for that Kyler Murray.

From NBC Sports w/ NBC Sports' comments...
Falcons HC Arthur Smith said, “I promise you, I’ll come in on Wednesday and tell you who’s starting,” when asked about Desmond Ridder starting in Week 9 against the Vikings. Smith was a bit all over the place in his Monday presser, citing Ridder’s health as the team’s top concern while also failing to commit to Ridder as the team’s starter if healthy. Ridder was cleared to return in Sunday’s Week 8 loss to the Titans, but Smith opted to keep veteran Taylor Heinicke in to finish things out. Smith cited Ridder’s health as the reason for not letting him go back in, but when a quarterback turns the ball over 12 times in eight games, it’s fair to question the legitimacy of that claim. We’ll know by Wednesday whether or not it will be Ridder or Heinicke taking the reins in Week 9.

With McDaniels getting sacked in Vegas, Jimmy G is going to the bench so the Raiders can see what they have with Aidan OConnell moving forward.
The Falcons are riding with Taylor Heinecke and benching Desmond Ridder.

I'm pretty excited to see what Griffin does in Oakland. I know their Defense will get inspired this Sunday, even with the Giants possibly being at full strength for the first time all season along their Offensive Line AND Barkley and Jones being healthy (enough) together. I think they put a hurtin' on the Giants' Offense. Waller probably will miss another week.
As far as the Raiders' Offense, it has to be better than anything Jimmy G could produce. Adams couldn't withstand another game with him. It's not temporary either. Griffin stated that he thinks O'Connell gives them their best chances of winning. I agree. Pretty certain that Jacobs will have his best game of the year, and Adams will be peppered at least 10 times accumulating at least 40% of the Raiders' Air Yards (100 our of 250).
Also expecting to see a 100-yd game and 2-TD performance from Kyle Pitts with Heinicke throwing him the ball. Arthur Smith is hard to trust, but Heinicke will still throw it to who he thinks it should go to.

Being a Tennessee fan I love seeing Josh do well and it’s really amazing what he did yesterday. But part of the reason he did so well was because the defense didn’t prepare for him. They did not have “a spy” on him. He struggles with passing accuracy but his running ability is dangerous. He’s deceptively fast due to his long strides
I think he’s a good option for a backup and I’m puzzled why teams like the Browns and Steelers cut him

Arizona as mentioned previously is an interesting watch going forward...
Do they continue to tank and have a first year head coach lose the locker room...Gannon is in a similar situation to the one Zac Taylor found himself in with the Bengals when he was in his first year.
Doubtful they could trade Murray reports in AZ were they did not shop him at the deadline but would have listened. Plus 46 million in dead cap hit would be huge.
I would at least want to see what I had in Murray away from Kliff's offense for a game or 2...he is only a few years removed from having an MVP type season in AZ.

Daniel Jones is now out for the year with an ACL tear. A fitting (for the club) end to the idiocy of the contract they signed him to last year. Ian Rapaport says that this may be a blessing in disguise for the Giants, because now they can have a horrifically bad year and get one of the first 2-3 picks in the draft and get a real top QB prospect in the draft, and be set for next 10-12 years.
I support that. Here's what I suggest (In case the Giants are reading this board). I doubt seriously that DeVito is the guy. You have Matt Barkley and Tyrod Taylor on your team. DO NOT PLAY THEM. We know they are as average as the day is long. Play DeVito for a couple games to ensure he is not the guy. But also scour the practice squads and take a chance on another guy. The PS QB in Jacksonville was fantastic in the CFL and looked good in pre-season. Grab him. Give him a few games down the road. Maybe he's legit!! Maybe he stinks and he ensures your draft position.
But don't throw Barkley or Taylor out there and accidently win 2 more games this year and end up picking 9th or 101th.

Better not to even start that conversation this season. Since there was zero chance any team would be interested in him (like the Nerd asking a hot girl on a date who needs to wait until he graduates and starts making money so he's more of an attraction to her), Arizona needs to just back off, get Murray 100% healthy so that Murray is confident enough to become a runner again (he backed off completely running the ball after he had a bad injury that cost him a few games two years ago), so that he could give the appearance of healthy (where he only plays for maybe four games of the season to lessen the chances of him getting hurt), and then try to unload that ridiculous contract (that's not so ridiculous now that Burrow/Hebert/Jackson/Hurts and others have signed contracts). Jets are always stupid enough to roll the dice, and there's always some G.M. desperate enough to try to save their job. One of the deterrants that is a huge deterrant is the great QB class that's coming out this season in the 2024 Draft. When the 2023 draft has some success stories by the end of the season, upper 1st Rd picks are still going to be highly valuable and worth the better risk than rolling the dice with Murray. Murray would have to have two or three games to finish this season of 4 TD's combined running and passing for teams to even consider trading for him this Spring. Too many better options in the draft next year.

Tommy DeVito still #1 in NYG. Joe Flacco came out of his retirement home and is now #1 for Cleveland. Browning may be earning a better job for himself next year by doing well for Bengals. Pickett is injured, Trubisky filling in, but the Steelers QB of the future might be playing in college.

I'm not sure how long they retain his rights beyond next season, if at all.I don't see a trade offer happening unless Callahan or Lou get a job elsewhere in the off-season and want to take Browning with them to help implement the offense there.
Even then, most teams are going to draft a QB to get them on the cheap rookie deals. No one is going to pay a premium whether it's cap space or draft picks for Browning unless he either lights it up more than Jacksonville or leads the Bengals deep into the playoffs.
It's a good problem to have though. I feel a lot more confident in Browning than I did when Burrow went down.

It was insanely dumb for Jags to allow it this week as Trevor Lawrence is in concussion protocol, and now if he's out we have no backup. I have no idea if Roarke is going to be good. Have no idea what the Vikings' plans are. There will probably be 8 or so openings at starting QB. Here's the cap implications if Denver wants to move on. And it certainly seems they want to:
2024 Dead Cap: $85,000,000
2024 Cap Savings: $-49,600,000
PRE-6/1 TRADE
2024 Dead Cap: $68,000,000
2024 Cap Savings: $-32,600,000
POST-6/1 RELEASE
2024 Dead Cap: $35,400,000
2025 Dead Cap: $49,600,000
2024 Cap Savings: $0
POST-6/1 TRADE
2024 Dead Cap: $18,400,000
2025 Dead Cap: $49,600,000
2024 Cap Savings: $17,000,000
So whatever the move I think it officially happens after June 1. Teams do stupid stuff all the time. Case in point this trade/sign by Denver. But Wilson has a base salary from 2025 to 2029 of 37M, 40M, 44M and 50M. He has a base salary of only 17 mill for 2025. The only way Wilson makes sense on his current salary is to play for 1 year and then cut him. I might trade for him if I had a contending team for 2024 and I lost my QB to season ending injury in training camp.

I have an alternate theory I have been kicking around, based on MLB at times using a relief pitcher to start a game for a couple of innings, as opposed to an actual starting pitcher.
QBs these days seem to follow a similar pattern, coming right out of college. They come into the league, very much NFL ready. And they look like rock stars for 3 or 4 games, until other NFL defenses get enough tape on them to expose them, and bring them crashing down to Earth. Then the honeymoon is over, and they turn back into pumpkins.
So, for a cash strapped team like Denver, who doesn't have a good starting QB, what if they:
- They draft 5 or 6 QBs in the lower rounds. Trade a 4th rounder for 2 fifth round picks or whatever. Try to find ones that have worked more of an NFL style offense, which is most of them these days.
- Now they have 6 rookie QBs on the roster.
- They all have all Spring, Summer, and Training Camp to learn the offense and get reps. It also creates a cooperative but competitive environment among them, which is usually a good thing.
- Only activate 2 at a time on game day.
- Start them one at a time until they are either
a: ineffective
or
b: eventually exposed once there is enough NFL film on them
- Then move on to the next one.
:alcohol:
Then ride that Rookie QB Carousel Gravy Train all the way to the Lombardi Trophy, while other teams are busy studying film on the QB you already benched.
It's like the complete opposite business model of teams like the Bengals, Chiefs, etc. You put all your resources everywhere else EXCEPT QB. Mahommes contract buys a LOT of defense, for example.
And before you say how stupid of an idea this is, I'll remind you that there are quite a few teams that are doing this with some success, on the fly, and out of necessity, rather than actually having it be the plan.

Yep, you're right and I read something else about how they expect to cut him in March, so somehow I guess they are going to find a way to financially rip off the band-aid. And take a 85 mill cap hit in one year. When they are already over the cap by 21 million. Glancing at their contracts, there are some guys who will save some serious money by being cut.
Bolles - saves 16 mill
Simmons - saves almost 15 mill
Sutton - saves 10 mill
Patrick - saves 10 mill
Powers - saves 6 mill
Jones - Saves 10 mill
So looks like their will be a fire sale in Denver

I doubt they'll take the $85mill hit in one year. That'd be basically impossible to do. If they must, they'll cut him at a point where the hit is split between next year and 2025. My guess is they'd prefer to trade him and get another team to eat part of that...at least pick up next year's salary.

"In what could be Bill Belichick's final game as #Patriots coach, he has demoted Mac Jones to the emergency No. 3 QB spot behind Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke."
Why in the world wouldn't you at least see what Rourke looks like? You've seen Zappe a lot.

Belichick hates the Jets and has beaten them 15 times in a row. I suspect it would grind his gears to possibly end his NE coaching career with a loss to the Jets, and figures Zappe gives them the best chance to win.

Well his decision isn’t looking too good right now. Halfway through the fourth quarter and his team has only scored 3 points

I didn’t say it was a smart decision.

Bears are looking at Greg Roman as offensive coordinator.
Why is this significant?
Could be an indicator they are looking at keeping Justin Fields.

Harbaugh is going to the Chargers. Draftkings just pulled betting on their site for where he is going to coach next year. He apparently flew his whole family out there today, he is taking the Michigan DC, Minter, and his son/Special teams coach - Jay Harbaugh, with him.

This probably belongs in the coaching carousel thread.
That said, Greg Roman is the rumored offensive coordinator. Wonder how Justin Herbert feels about running the read option?

I'm hoping they Drew Brees him and waste a first round pick on Harbaugh's boy "the greatest qb in Michigan History".

But Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline believes Mayfield’s yearly earnings could be ten times higher in the 2024 season.
After Pauline attended the Senior Bowl and discussed this matter with other NFL experts, he believes Mayfield’s contract could be worth up to $40 million per year. He said that if Daniel Jones and Deshaun Watson can get that kind of money, Mayfield might get those numbers as well.
Watson hasn't played enough to do any type of comparison (lol). I think he's a bust. Houston has to be loving who they ended up with at QB. ;)
