They won 10-0 today in one of these new ten run rule games. After 7, coaches can agree to a ten run rule. This means that Tenn actually had a walkoff HR win, due to the score being 8-0 before the 2 run HR.
Don't know how good Alabama A&M is but they were 3-0 coming into the game. Nice to see such good pitching from the Vols' Tuesday guys

University of Portland (2 blocks from our home) beat #5 ranked Texas A&M 10-3 on Friday on College Station, Texas.
So, how do both teams respond?
University of Portland beat them again on Saturday, this time 4-1. So, in two games, they've beat them by a combined 14-4 on the road. Clearly the best early season victories in the history of the University of Portland Pilots baseball program. They had never beaten a Top-5 opponent in their history. They've rarely played them, though they do play the Oregon State Beavers every season, but never beat them when Oregon State was ranked in the Top-5. Naturally, they have never beaten one twice, and never on the road. It's an amazing accomplishment. They'll go for the sweep on Sunday.

And, because it's a Catholic University that specializes in education, not sports (though they've had their share of success nationally with soccer) like some do, the kids that attend don't have wild parties in the neighborhood. It's always quiet. Go seven blocks north and it's a hell hole, literally. It sits on a bluff, the furthest south along the Willamette River that the Lewis & Clark expedition sent a scout. There's no homeless living on the streets in our neighborhood, one of the few places in the Portland Metro area that is like that. There's pockets, but they are hard to find. There's still burglaries and car prowls and catalytic converter thefts, but it's so much better than everywhere else.

Ohio State had a good win @ Gonzaga, I see.
University of Portland almost pulled off the sweep, but #5 (not anymore) Texas A&M pulled out a 5-4 win today.
University of Oregon got swept by UC Santa Barbara (Oregon State crushed UC Santa Barbara twice last week after Santa Barbara had a couple of good wins before that).
Oregon State crushed Coppin State this weekend, but I think they lost the opener. Today's final was 19-5.
Vanderbilt beat a good UCLA team in Tennessee 2-1 today. Don't know what the other two games were.

I had to look it up but I guess it’s not a universal rule:
SECTION 79. By conference rule, or mutual consent of both coaches before the contest, a game may be stopped only after seven innings if one team is ahead by at least 10 runs.
It was 21-2 after two innings. UW drew 15 walks and 8 HBPs. The game lasted 3 hours and 22 minutes; I’m surprised it wasn’t 5 hours long.

After Oregon State lost their season opener, they went on a 6-game stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14-2. The 15th-ranked (Baseball America) Oregon State Beavers got a welcome return Tuesday as pre-season All-American Pitching candidate Ben Ferrer threw his first innings of the season, two innings against the Toreros of the University of San Diego. Ferrer missed the team's first 11 games battling mono, so the season will probably progress slowly for him as he tries to regain his strength. Beavers won again, 9-4. Love the announcer.
Pacific University is in Forest Grove, Oregon, where many of "The Librarian episodes" are filmed when they wanted to use some urban settings. (I've been to nearly every location they've filmed any scene of that show, about a 50 by 50 square mile area from Salem to Portland north and south and Forest Grove to Troutdale east to west.) Don't know what was going on there, but that is definitely not normal. Fundamentals are heavily stressed around here, with Oregon State usually being the best in the nation at them and most of their players coming from local areas around here. (In 2022 in MLB, for example, the 2nd and 3rd best contact-rates from hitters are two ex-Oregon State infielders.) San Diego, btw, has a good team. Tony Gwynn set a good foundation for that school when he was there as a Coach.
What a meltdown. Pretty cool about Brett Butler coming in and speaking to the REDS' organization about bunting. It does look like Friedl is purposely trying to use it more as part of his hitting during Spring Training. He's one who is good at making adjustments and that means to throw a Pitcher a different look than what he's been seeing. Friedl always gets better when he gets to see a Pitcher a couple of different times during a season. Looking forward to his plate appearances this year after having had quite a few opportunities last year to perhaps see the entire National League one-time through. Of course, now with the new schedules, there will be more pitchers to have to see for the first time ever this season for many players.
The Oregon State Beavers hit an early season slump. They began Pac-12 play with a very unusual home series loss, to Washington State, losing two of three. That was never supposed to happen. Then they lose at home again....to Nevada, badly, 5-1. They beat Nevada 12-1 the next day. Those were both mid-week games where regulars don't play, but still. Not supposed to lose to Nevada. They they get swept at top-ranked Stanford in Palo Alto. The first two games weren't even close. So, that's six losses in seven games, knocking them out of the top-25 before they lost to Nevada and Stanford. It's going to be a while before they enter the Top-25 again. No excuses. Washington State outplayed them and Stanford handed them their lunches. They got a mid-week win today, beating the University of Portland for the 32nd time in 35 games and 16th straight in Corvallis. But, (here's that bad Defense) they needed five Portland errors to come from behind to get the win. This isn't a bad University of Portland team, though, as Texas A&M, ranked Top-5 at the time, barely avoided being swept three games at College Station with a 5-4 Sunday win.
The weather always plays a part for teams from the NW as they just don't get outdoor practice in like teams below the 39th parallel. When we aren't getting rained on every day, it's just too damn cold. February at Pacific, Oregon State and University of Portland was five degrees lower than normal. That's January weather, mid-winter weather. We had a lot of snow, six different days and one day we had a foot of snow. In March, we never saw 50 degrees until the 10th. From Thursday to Monday we aren't supposed to see 50 degrees in these three Cities. It's cold and wet, so the Defense will take some time to mature, as will all the teams, though Portland threw that shocker at Texas A&M. There's going to be some fundamental errors until the teams here in the Willamette Valley can get some weather improvement. The Tulip Festival has been pushed back as the blooms are weeks late. We are just now getting crocuses and tulips, when we should have had crocuses six to seven weeks ago (Groundhog Day) and dafodils three to four weeks ago, which we are just getting now.
Oregon State usually has a slow start, but they always get better. Same is true of any baseball team North of the 39th Parallel anywhere in the U.S.

And, on cue, we see Friedl lay down a perfect infield bunt past a Left-handed pitcher tonight against the Padres and our announcer saying, "somewhere Brett Butler is smiling". Then the trouble begins. Pitcher now has to throw from the stretch. Another runner gets on base. Friedl becomes a threat and leads a double-steal where both runners advance. Then a run scores. This is perfect baseball. I know this is the wrong thread, so I'm going to copy this over to another.

Oregon State fell out of the Top-25. They got back in with a series sweep against #24 USC (which dropped them out of the Top-25).
This is one of the worst seasons in a long time for the PAC-12, as only one team, Stanford, is in the Top-20, and that's somewhere around #12.
It's still very early in the season and Winter has been very long. Should be a cold weekend in the Midwest.

They'll get back in because nearly every week they'll be playing a Top-25 team, and often a Top-15 team. One sweep and that garners a lot of votes and attention, considering how many players are still on the team from last season's historic effort. That experience will show itself as the season wears on.

That's just it, there aren't a lot of guys left over from last year. The entire starting 9 is gone as well as the closer. They did return their big 3 starters but results haven't been as good. Their manager insist on calling the bunt. This is generally a bad strategy in general but it's a particularly bad strategy when you're just plain not good at it. Which is exactly what I predicted would happen and I was never worried about the Vols reentering the top-25. It takes a little time during a season for new Starters to develop, but the pedigree of the program made them all quality players even when they weren't playing on weekends. They were still playing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays last season. Same thing's happening with Oregon State, as they put together an 8-game winning streak following their early Pac-12 struggles. That was capped Saturday and Sunday, though as their bullpen blew big leads in both games.

The University of Alabama on Thursday fired baseball coach Brad Bohannon for “violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees,” the school said in a statement. It was non-public because there was a different starting pitcher listed (the Alabama website would have done a preview listing the expected starters), and the general public didn't know the expected starter was going to be scratched with back tightness (or somethign along those lines). The coach allegedly shared the news of the pitching change with the bettor who made the bet on LSU at Great American Ballpark before the change in starting pitcher was announced to the public.

Not quite. I'm not necessarily in favor of all this open gambling but the sports book did what it was supposed to do. If any sports book sees that an abnormal amount of money is being placed on a team, they shut down all bets on that game. That's how the last couple of college basketball betting scandals were found out.

New Rankings from Baseball America:
Wake Forest rises to the top of the Baseball America Top 25 after its eighth straight series win to open ACC play. This is the first time in the 43-year history of the rankings that the Demon Deacons have ranked No. 1.
Wake Forest leads the nation in both wins (39) and winning percentage (.848). It is in first place in the ACC and has not lost a weekend series this season.
LSU falls to No. 2, ending its 12-week run atop the rankings after a series loss at Auburn. The Tigers were ranked No. 1 in the Preseason Top 25 and held it through the first 11 weeks of the season, the longest run for a Preseason No. 1 team since 2013 North Carolina. Vanderbilt, Arkansas and Stanford round out the top five.
Three teams this week joined the Top 25. Clemson leads the newcomers, entering at No. 18 after its fifth straight ACC series win. It is Clemson’s first ranking this season. Kentucky closely follows at No. 19, returning to the Top 25 after a week outside the rankings. The Wildcats are coming off a sweep of South Carolina. Auburn rounds out the rankings at No. 25 after taking down LSU. The Tigers return to the Top 25 after a two-month absence.
Falling out of the Top 25 are Arizona State, Tennessee and Boston College. All three lost conference series.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/rankings/college-baseball-top-25/
The Bottom 13 teams are all competing for hosting a Regional, and that decision will be based on how they play over the next 11 days. Those in the bottom-five probably have to win their Conference Tournaments to host a Regional. We have the last weekend of Conference play followed by Conference Tournaments. The Top 12 teams are all competing to be Super Regional hosts and are probably already locks for Regional Hosts.
A lot of hosting site maneuvering will be taking place over the next 11 days.

My hometown ISU Sycamores moved on to the Super Regionals and were due to host TCU, but due to NCAA rules have to play it at TCU. Here in Terre Haute, we are hosting the Special Olympics and all of the hotels are reserved. I'm not sure of what the radius is, but a team has to stay so close to where it's playing, or the venue needs moved. Also, since we are hosting the Special Olympics, we don't have the support staff to move to a Bloomington or Victory Field in Indy. Kinda sucks for these players, but that's life. TCU fans have been very kind during all of this as well.

What happened?
Routine fly ball to right center with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Right fielder lost it in the lights, and the winning run scored.
And to be fair to the right fielder, the center fielder didn't see it either. It just happened to fall at the feet of the right fielder.
Also, Bowser celebrating like he did something was kind of weird.

A loss on the field, a win at the bar (https://theathletic.com/4623889/2023/06/20/shohei-ohtani-stats-the-pulse/)
Wake Forest beat LSU, 3-2, last night in the Men’s College World Series showdown between what was — according to sportsbooks — the best two teams in the country. No. 1 Wake moves a step closer to the title series, while LSU has to stave off elimination tonight against Tennessee. Sigh.
At a nearby bar, though, LSU’s fan base posted a generational performance.
Rocco’s, an Omaha, Neb. establishment, recently started a contest to see which fan base of each MCWS participant could drink the most jello shots during the two-week competition. The reigning champion was Ole Miss, last year’s national title winner, with 18,777 shots purchased.
Yesterday, on the competition’s fourth day, LSU surpassed Ole Miss’ total. An hour before first pitch, LSU fans — aided by Raising Cane’s founder Todd Graves — pushed their total to 21,435.
The MCWS has been fun, the loss for my Tigers aside. Six of the eight games so far have been decided by one run, and all eight games have been decided by a total of 11 runs. Keep up with everything on our running live blog here.
