Hayden Wesneski (3-2, 2.18 in six games in 2022) makes his 2023 debut for the Cubs in starting the second game of the series. The right-hander was 3-1 with a 2.12 ERA and 22 strikeouts in five spring training starts, and did not allow a run in his first 11 2/3 innings of Cactus League action.

Wesneski is making his second career start and third appearance vs. Cincinnati. He is 1-1 with a 0.82 ERA in the two previous outings, including his major league debut last Sept. 6, when he picked up the win in relief with eight strikeouts over five scoreless innings.

The Reds answer with reliever-turned-starter Luis Cessa (4-4, 4.57 in 2022). Cessa is making his 11th career appearance and third start vs the Cubs. He has no wins or losses against them, and an ERA of 4.00 in 18 innings with 18 strikeouts.

How can they do that? The Reds had the lead before Cruz ever entered the game. I thought the pitcher of record was the one who was the last pitcher on the mound before his team took the lead. Young finished the top of the 5th...the Reds score 3 in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. No more runs are scored. How does the guy who pitched the 6th get the win? I figured he'd get a hold or something.

I was expecting 2(C)-1(DH)-2(1B)-1(DH)-1(day of rest somewhere within a 7-day week, whether that's a scheduled off-day, a rainout, or a DNP). 3 games at C already may only be a coincidence as they want to get a bit more early season work in with each of the Starting Pitchers, but this is a pace that exceeds that 60-game number mentioned before ST started when they decided to go with 3 Catchers. For me, this is a good thing and the exact direction I would take with the plan of eventually moving on from Maile because we no longer have the need to extend Stephenson's career and get his bat in the lineup as often as possible. We have enough hitting now and even more in the immediate pipeline thanks to Vosler, CES, Friedl and Fraley and India. We can go for really good lineups more often with Stephenson at C. We are no longer desperate to have Stephenson in the lineup as much as possible.

Stephenson has to have at least one off day every week no matter what and I would max him out at C at 3 games in a 7-day period, now instead of 2.
