The Masters 2023

The Masters is about to start and there are so many storylines…..Rory going for the grand slam, Tiger, LIV golfers, etc. It’s setting up to be an epic Masters, but lets hope the crummy weather forecast doesn’t deter the tournament too much.

Looking at the tee times and the forecast, the late/early wave should have a major advantage since then can play their second rounds on Friday morning before the rains come. Notables in that draw are Scheffler, Spieth, McIlroy and Day. I’m guessing around 75% of the top 25 after 2 rounds will come from that wave. And, Saturday looks awful with low 50’s and rain all day, but hopefully that’ll change for better somehow.

Yeah I don’t remember such a variance in conditions like this week will have. I’m sure it has happened, but almost seems more like a British Open with better scenery.

Tomorrow looks like fun! You have to have some luck to win majors and those in the late/early draw certainly got it this week. That said, if they play the entire 3rd round tomorrow absolutely anything can happen. In that type of weather, keeping your hands warm is almost the #1 priority because if they get cold you can’t feel the club. They should be able to stay dry with the help of their caddies, but it’s going to be brutal.

For the 2nd round, the players who played yesterday (late/early wave) morning were +18 total. For those who finished today, they are collectively +88 and that’s still rising. It’s pretty incredible what Rahm has done this morning.

It looks pretty miserable out there right and sets up to be a long, cold and wet 3rd round.

Is this on tv anywhere? I legit don’t think I’ve ever had this much trouble watching the masters before. I looked for it this morning and it’s like it doesn’t exist. I was kinda watching it while on treadmill at the Y on Thursday and it was some dude with a beard sitting at a table talking to a country singer for 30 minutes while they showed clips of swings every 5 minutes. Same thing yesterday. Wtf?

This morning it was on ESPN while they finished the second round.

The coverage starts at 3pm today and 2pm tomorrow on either espn or cbs.

Prior to that ESPN+ has featured groups and coverage of some of the holes like Amen Corner.

For a little while there, I thought they were going to call it when water started standing on the 7th green (update: just heard they’re squeegeeing the green), but it seems like the rain lightened up just a bit to allow them to keep playing. The radar looks terrible though and I’d be surprised if they completed this round today. On the bright side, they’ve already played enough holes today to be able to finish the tournament by tomorrow evening which is great so there isn’t a Monday finish.

As great as The Masters is, I’m hoping we get some better/closer finishes pretty soon. The last 4 champions, DJ/Hideki/Scottie/Rahm, won with no stress on 18. I hope it’s closer the next few years.

The Sunday final round was the most-watched golf telecast on any network the past five years (beating out even Tiger's 2019 final round). Full Swing effect? People tuning in for LIV vs. PGAT fireworks (there really were none). Easter holiday with most people finding themselves home with no other plans?

That’s good news. Even without Tiger, there are so many great golfers and the added drama with the LIV golfers. Plus, the leaderboard was fantastic. Golf is in a great spot right now.

2019 was played in the morning because of weather. Had that been in the regular viewing window, that one would have been one of the highest rated golf broadcasts ever. 2020 was played during the NFL season. 21 and 22 were huge leads going into the final round, so no drama. Lots of drama this Sunday, but I don’t think it was more than the typical Sunday at the masters.
