Huggins issues apology:
"During the conversation, I used a completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase that there is simply no excuse for -- and I won't try to make one here. I deeply apologize to the individuals I have offended, as well as to the Xavier University community, the University of Cincinnati and West Virginia University. As I have shared with my players over my 40 years of coaching, there are consequences for our words and actions, and I will fully accept (anything) coming my way. I am ashamed and embarrassed and heartbroken for those I have hurt. I must do better, and I will."
"And there's a deep drive to left by Castellanos and that will be a home run. 4-0"

What an idiotWhat's worse is WVU fans are already rallying behind him. Basically saying that firing him would do too much damage to the university and a hefty fine and 10 game suspension would be better.
Anyone who has complained about Huggins in the last five years, this is your out. You take it. Yes Huggins has brought in a lot of good recruits from the transfer portal this season but if he does stay it's going to bring a LOT of notoriety and negative publicity to not only the program but the state as a whole.

Great coach. He made Louisville into a national power. Even though he was the coach of the school that was Kentucky's biggest rival, I always had a lot of respect form him. He ran his program in a very calm and efficient manner. He always seemed like a very pleasant person. UCLA's biggest mistake after Wooden retired was not hiring Crum as his successor. UL should ever be grateful they didn't. RIP Denny Crum.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denny_Crum
Denzel Edwin Crum (March 2, 1937 – May 9, 2023) was an American men's college basketball coach at the University of Louisville from 1971 to 2001, compiling a 675–295 (.696) record. He guided the Cardinals to two NCAA championships (1980, 1986) and six Final Fours. Honored in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame since 1994, Crum was one of the major figures in the history of sports in Kentucky and in college basketball.
As the head coach at U of L, Crum was widely credited with pioneering the now-common strategy of scheduling tough non-conference match-ups early in the season in order to prepare his teams for March's NCAA tournament, where one defeat ends the season. Crum's prolific post-season play and calm demeanor earned him the monikers "Mr. March" and his most well-known nickname, "Cool Hand Luke."

As I figured...it won't cost him his job like many saidIn all honesty I think the best case scenario would have been for him to resign.
If he was fired it would have been Joe Paterno all over again (not equating what Huggins did with Paterno turning a blind eye to child rape) but the fan reaction.
With WVU taking the path they did now it's a talking point for at least the first half of the season as we are all reminded that Huggins is suspended for homophobic comments.
He is no longer the highest paid employee in the state. That title goes to Neal Brown.

West Virginia men's basketball head coach Bob Huggins has agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him in Morgantown through the 2023-24 season. The school announced the news Friday.
Huggins also has the option to continue coaching or lengthen his relationship with WVU through June 30, 2027.

I'm leaning toward the former.
Either way, he's done. You don't bite the hand that feeds and he's done exactly that. The only thing that saved his job with what he said on Bill Cunningham was that it was WVU and they swept it under the rug. If they don't fire him then he can pretty much do whatever he wants.

Wonder who WVU targets to replace Huggins.
Andy Kennedy and Frank Martin both have experience replacing him (Kennedy at UC and Martin at K-State). Of the two I think Martin is more likely. Kennedy is from Mississippi and coaching UAB. I think he stays in the south.
Ron Everhart I think is the most likely option as an interim and then WVU goes for a full time replacement.

It's why Coach K, Roy Williams, and many of the old guard coaches have gotten out. It's a major issue for Kentucky right now and is why Cal has struck out on every target in the transfer portal this off-season.

Cal didn't want a collective because it meant giving input to players. So now they've started the LaFamilia Club which is a collective without calling it a collective. The lack of a collective and boosters not matching is why Kentucky lost Hunter Dickinson to Kansas and Keshad Johnson to Arizona.

Three players are already in the portal and three more are waiting to see who WVU hires.
It's not a hard decision. Promote Everhart or Eilert, keep the rest of the staff intact, try to keep the team together and then blow it up next off-season. By then Mazzulla could likely be run out of Boston.

I guess you're defining it as his never signing a resignation letter. This seems pretty clear cut:
The university provided The AP with a copy of a notice sent by Huggins’ wife, June, that same day. It read: “Please accept this correspondence as my formal notice of resignation as WVU Head Basketball Coach and as notice of my retirement from West Virginia University, effective immediately.”
The notice was sent from an email address associated with June Huggins, with a signature indicating it was sent via iPhone. It was sent to Uryasz’s email address and did not appear to be a text message, as Campbell claimed.
West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker responded an hour later by writing, “We accept your resignation and wish you the best in retirement. We appreciate your many years of dedication to WVU.”

Huggins has done a lot for the state and has donated a lot of money to the university. But getting hammered and getting behind the wheel after his previous incident was basically doubling down. I'm honestly glad WVU didn't let him agree to go to rehab especially after they came out and said anything further to embarrass the university would result in termination.
There are fans out there who want Gee gone (don't blame them there) and Huggins back. This fiasco is going to make it very hard to attract any coach outside of the current staff next season.

If he takes down Gee with him, I can hope for the best. If what I’ve heard from people there is true Gee needs replaced badly and that various areas of the school are crumbling from lack of enrollment and fund raising. I wonder if Ollie would come back and run the university.

You have to wonder if there was some defect in his heart that caused that. Seems like there had to be. Very rare for that to happen a teenager. His family had access to the best medical care and it still wasn't spotted? Not blaming anyone but perhaps it was something that was undetectable. Thank God it didn't end in tragedy.

If Payne gets fired (likely), would Louisville look at Bob Huggins?
I'd imagine there would be better (and younger) candidates to choose from but bring Huggins aboard with a young assistant to take over when he does retire.
That said I see him back at WVU next year.

Gee is supposedly retiring this year and Huggins supposedly hasn't hit the bottle since his DUI. There is going to be a lot of fan support to bring Huggins back but whether the administration goes through with it is a different story.

It be nice if NCAA would let us get a transfer to immediately play like they do for 90% of the other cases.
Also be nice if NCAA would actually punish schools who do real bs (like Kansas, UNC, etc) instead of punishing guys because they accept Taco Bell from a coach.
It also be nice if we had a compete head of the university that was actually working to improve the university. #FireGee

Classic Shootout. X plays about as well as they have all year and UC plays worse. . . especially at Cintas.
Needless to say, you're right, they need to beef up their OOC schedule. I hate how they play no one before this game.

Juwan Howard stepping down immediately but will stick around as some kind of assistant to Phil Martelli.
Rumors are that he hit the team’s strength coach.
Interesting couple of months in Ann Arbor
Edit:
Jon Rothstein: Michigan’s Juwan Howard is stepping down as head coach effective immediately. Assistant Phil Martelli will become the interim head coach.
Howard will remain with the Wolverines in an assistant role for the remainder of the season before weighing his options in the offseason.

Ray Meyer had it going there for a while. He probably had the best team in the nation a couple of times but seemed to always get knocked out early in the NCAA's. They lost to St. Joseph's in the first round one year when they had a great team. That was probably the biggest upset in NCAA tournament history until UMBC beat UVA a few years ago.

When I was a kid, I was an Old Dominion basketball fan. It was my parents’ alma mater and we would occasionally get to go to some games. In 1981, ODU upset then #1 ranked DePaul. I wasn’t at that game but we did go to the following home game, and the staff handed out signs that said “DePaul who? ODU 63, DePaul 62!” I was so excited to get that sign. Great memory.

Joey Meyer destroyed everything his dad built.
Ray Meyer himself said in '96 that the rules for recruiting were different when he was in charge and Joey was an assistant. In those days, you could literally visit a recruit's home every day if you wished to. Thus, a HUGE advantage recruiting the talent-laden Chicago area.
And we Gen Xers (and older) remember full well DePaul games on WGN Nationwide when there were very few (even with ESPN) Nationally televised games. Thus, a then-National Profile which disappeared.
For the last ten years or so of Joey Meyer's tenure, Joey never had the aforementioned advantages at his disposal. A decline was inevitable no matter who replaced Ray Meyer. It's the failures of hire after hire post Joey Meyer that should really be questioned here.

I had to go look up Joey's record. In 13 years he was 231-158 for a .594 winning %. Not too shabby. He made the NCAAT 7 of his first 8 years. Won 20+ six times. His "downfall" coincided with DePaul joining a conference.

I would say he can recruit but the Duke letterhead sells itself. Next year will be his trial by fire with Cooper Flagg and possibly others coming in.
Only thing that will save his job is that Coach K produced next to nothing in assistants and former players who have went on to have great coaching careers. There is no Daggum Roy Williams at Kansas to take over at UNC and continue Dean Smiths legacy.

It wasn't fair to bring in some other guy to get smoked in this game. So smiling Kenny went out in his blues to supervise the Louisville bench one last time for one last embarrassing home blowout. Calipari even took it easy in the second half to keep it from looking TOO ugly. Louisville doesn't play again for almost two weeks. Perfect time to let Payne enjoy his money and give someone else 10 days to make this ream his own before heading into the new year. It's not going to be great no matter what, but someone competent can make this group competitive most nights.

Payne will probably have a landing spot in Lexington in the off-season. Hate how his time has gone in Louisville because it made it hard for UK fans to root against the guy compared to Pitino.
Once DJ Wagner committed to Kentucky it was pretty much Game Over for Payne in Louisville. That was his calling card and it never materialized. That and everyone realizing he's a better assistant than a head coach.

It's always a bad sign when your rival's fans like your coach. You know what UK coach UofL fans really liked? Tubby Smith.
In any event, Payne may make it all the way through the season or he may get fired today. All the UofL fans are just throwing their hopes and dreams at a wall and seeing what might stick. But at 9-35 it's pretty clear he's incompetent and it's just a matter of time for him. The one who should REALLY be worried is the AD. The longer he lets this go on the more the fans start wondering if he's part of the problem and maybe should leave with Payne as well.

Why?
Tubby had a 6-4 record against Louisville and won the last three games against Pitino.
Instead, Cardinal fans should have loved Billy Gillispie, who was 0-2 vs. Louisville.
Joe B. was 2-2 versus Louisville.

Well, no one loved Gillispie. He was (probably is) a terrible person. UofL fans certainly didn't mind him as UK's coach, though. Tubby did fine against Louisville, but he also caught Louisville when they were pretty terrible. The three Crum won against Smith never should have happened, honestly. And Smith after that first year led Kentucky's program into a pretty mediocre place.
Our all time favorite UK coach has to be Bill Curry though. That guy lost to Ron Cooper twice. Yo.

Tubby just couldn't seal the deal on top recruits. That was his downfall. Also took on too many "projects" and I think that drug down the program to a certain degree. Tubby was a very likable person who was really hard to dislike unless you were a racist. If he had made just one more final four I think most would have been very satisfied with his time at UK.

He didn't recruit Burger Boys and when he did he had little success with them outside of Tayshaun Prince and one year with Keith Bogans.
Rajon Rondo had a better NBA career than he had at UK. Joe Crawford and Randolph Morris had largely forgettable careers.
I remember when OJ Mayo played in Kentucky and Tubby went to a game. Everyone thought Tubby was there to scout Mayo but he was really there for Ravi Moss who ended up as a walk on and had a pretty successful career. Tubby also didn't recruit other players such as Brandan Wright (UNC) and Corey Brewer (Florida), the latter he said couldn't play in the SEC.

Arizona entered the final day of 2023 as the second-best defensive team in the country, according to KenPom.com. It goes into 2024 hoping that Sunday was a major anomaly.
Stanford hit a school-record 16 3-pointers, needing only 25 attempts to do so, and shot 58.1 percent overall to blow out the 4th-ranked Wildcats 100-82 at Maples Pavilion.
