I understand sitting Fraley against a LH starter. But, there is no reason not to have at least 1, if not both, of Friedl and Benson in the lineup. And Newman in the 5-hole instead of CES?

They won't sit. Hopefully they will chase Corbin at some point and Frield will PH for Senzel, Fraley for Newman (though I wouldn't start him either), and Benson for Stew.

Steer to 3B, Frield stays in at CF, Fraley stays in at RF, and Benson at LF.

You can’t be surprised by things that aren’t surprising.

Newman, Senzel and now Fairchild get the starts versus lefties and for whatever reason are high in the batting order.

Benson had his one chance and struck out a couple times…versus lefties he’s in the AAA lineup that day. Friedl is our player who is top 10 in batting average, gold glove like fielder in CF and 2nd on the team in WAR….the last time he didn’t play CF there was a critical missed deep pop out that began everything unraveling.

Newman and Senzel had two of the worst fielding games we have seen in a while but they are in there for that bats. I’ll assume they’ll combine for 6 hits.

It’s a fun game to see how long into the season Fairchild can have more plate appearances than Benson

I have to admit I'm a bit surprised — and disappointed — to see Fairchild and Newman in the starting lineup tonight. Neither player is a difference-maker at the plate. Friedl and Benson have earned their starting positions. Fairchild is a AAA player at best. Newman is depth in the infield, not a starter. The runs might be few and far between this evening for the home team with this lineup.

It is well proven that lefty/lefty matchups strongly favor the pitcher. This year, lefty hitters MLB-wide are batting .688 OPS against lefties. RHH are batting .756 OPS against lefties. This is not unusual, it’s similar every year.

Bell believes in playing matchups, so he’s going to hit RHH against LHP in most cases, if possible.

He misplayed it and it hit him in the glove.

I’ve watched both plays 10x (it’s sad yes) Both players will tell you they should’ve had it. Frieda’s play was decently tougher play…it just was. One was a driven pop up type ball and was was a rope that tailed.

Fairchild had 5.4 seconds from the time the ball left the bat until the ball got to his glove….Friedl had 3.9 seconds. Fairchild’s should get caught every time while Friedl’s would’ve been a highlight play.

Both could’ve been caught, one was decently more difficult if a play.

We need a win tonight.

Oh Reds nice. You were around for Sparky then. Sparky loved platooning. He started guys like Locklear, Scheinblum and Crowley instead of foster due to those guys hitting left handed. Took him 4 years to insert Foster and Geronimo as full time starters.
Foster might be in the hall of fame if he hadn't been platooned for 4 years. So you agree with me...

So you agree with me...

I don't mind platooning. Because in close games in the 5th Corbin will be gone a right hander will likely come in and Bell can pinch hit.
They don't face that many Left hand starters. But when they do it seems like they face them in bunches. I believe they only faced one the entire month of July. Bench guys need at bats from time to time.
Nobody think Senzel or Newman are great but the numbers show the one thing they do really well is hit left hand pitchers good. At least this year. It's putting guys in the best situation for them to succeed. I do agree when he plays Newman should be DH. He should never play the field in non blowout games.

Ashcraft cost himself there…he knows it. Fairchild a nice play coming in to bail him out.

Big innings often happen when one player makes a miscue and then the teammates follow suit. When your teammate makes an error you should always want the next ball to help out your teammate. Fairchild did that.

August 4, 1960 --- Billy, Don't Be a Hero

It's the top of the 2nd inning, 2 outs and no one on base for the Reds at Wrigley Field. The Reds lead 2-0. Reds second basemen, Billy Martin(yes, that Billy), thinking that Cubs' pitcher , Jim Brewer, is throwing at him, does his best Bert Campaneris and hurls his bat in the direction of Brewer and the mound. Brewer picks up the bat and, as Billy advances to retrieve his lumber, the two men exchange words and Billy punches Brewer with a hard overhand right that fractures the orbital bone of Brewer's right eye. The benches clear and Billy continues his onslaught, decking Chicago's Frank Thomas with another right hand. When all is said and done, Billy is ejected and Brewer is off to the hospital, where he would require surgery to repair his eye. Martin would be pinch hit for by Eddie Kasko, who would promply be struck out by Brewer's replacement, Joe Schaffernoth.

Schaffernoth would get the win that day in the Windy City, as the Cubs would rally behind Ernie Banks' 30th homerun and 3 RBIs to win 5-3, before 4,200 hearty baseball fans. Billy would be fined $500 for the punch to Brewer's eye and would serve a 5-game suspension. Brewer would require two surgeries to repair his eye and and the Cubs and Brewer would sue Billy for $1,040,000 for the loss of Brewer's services for the season. The case would later be settled out of court for $10,000. Billy would return to the Reds lineup six days later as a pinch runner. Kasko played very well at second base in Billy's absence and Billy would play very little until Kasko was injured on August 14.

As far as who started the fight, you can imagine the accounts differ depending on who you ask. Brewer claimed he was sucker-punched. According to the Cubs pitcher, he asked Martin, “Do you want to fight? Billy said, ‘No kid, I just came after the bat.’ And then he swung at me." Billy's account is not the same as Brewer's. Billy said, " I didn’t throw the bat – it just slipped out of my hands. Nothing would have started, but he said some things to me, giving me a lot of mouth, so I hit him. If he hadn’t said anything, I would have picked up the bat and gone back to the plate.”

About this fiasco at Wrigley, baseball’s oldest living ballplayer at the time, 98-year-old William Ellsworth “Dummy” Hoy, said, “The disgraceful affairs between the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs in Chicago the other day was enough to cause Abner Doubleday and Judge Landis to turn over in their graves."

Billy was sold to the Milwaukee Braves after the season and would retire from playing after the 1961 season. And then it was on managing... and more fighting !!!

Will Benson remains in the game as the left fielder.

Defensive switch from left field to first base for Spencer Steer.

Pirates up on the Brews 3-0 in the first.

That’s a nice shot of excitement.

This game is blah, and I have this feeling of uneasiness about it.

When Reds go to 14 position players (and pitchers) in September, if India is back, Stu will get the call for that extra spot. No doubt, and he should.

I guess it could be Casali but I’ll go with Stu.

I feel like there is a team out there willing to take a shot on Barrero's upside.

Will Bell allow Ashcraft to go the distance? The bullpen really needs a rest.

It’s gotta be Diaz in the 9th.

Please don’t let that little nubber haunt tho

If Ashcraft hits him in the back with the throw, they may call an out for running out of the lane.

In baseball and in life, some people can't take an L.

No. Diaz will pitch the 9th. He hasn't pitched in 4 days.
