2023 weekly college football pick'em

It's fast approaching that time of year again. No changes to the format from last year. We'll be playing approximately 20 games/week depending on the strength of schedule. I will select games, as best I can, from all the available conferences, based on match-ups, competitiveness, and level of competition.

And yes, we will be playing point spreads. If the spread is under a TD I don't utilize it then. Giving us amateurs a break there. My main goal with point spreads is to "even out", bring some balance, to some of these games so your pick isn't so obvious or easy. But I will not be putting games on the schedule where a P5 is playing some cupcake, like Frostbite Falls, and giving them 40 pts (lol). I don't care who the school is (lol).

I will be adding .5 to whole number spreads to insure no ties.

It's all about having fun, while also maintaining some sort of competitive level of play.

Those who have played know I don't like putting Thursday games on the schedule. I have the new schedule out every Monday for the following week, so omitting Thursday games, playing only Friday and Saturday games, gives people more time (due to work schedules) to get their picks in.

I say that because Week #1, which is always screwy, will begin on Thursday, Aug. 31st thru Sunday Sept. 3rd. Once we get through that first week we can then settle into the regular schedule.

I will have that 1st week posted some time next week, once I see point spreads are set.

While we all keep an eye on one another when we post our picks. If you miss a pick, forget, don't select a winner for a particular game, it goes down as a loss. But we all do a pretty good job of sending a PM or making a post to remind someone when that occurs.

So you're giving up on college football? I've already done that with the NFL. I'll have to see what effect the NIL and transfer portal will have on college play; but college may go the same route as the NFL. ;)

Yes pretty much. I may watch some out of habit but I have plenty of other things to do. I don't like most of the changes, like all of the transfers, the conglomeration of conferences and in football, in particular, the players that opt out of bowl games which is becoming more and more prevalent. NIL may actually be last on the list. I don't mind that as much as the other things. Most things change but that doesn't mean you have to like or even go along with it.

I don't think OSU is going to cover, but I think they are going to run the ball all day long, if Indiana can't contain the run its going to be a blowout, however, will still probably not cover. I am picking Hoosiers but expect a 3-4 TD win by the Buckeyes.

Regarding the Vols. I recently read an article that called Milton a dark horse Heisman candidate. Joe may win the Heisman, he may become a HoF QB in the NFL on his way to multiple Super Bowls. But I will for as long as I live remember Milton as being a Michigan QB that lost to IU.

You and me both. Milton also was not good early for the Vols so he has a lot to prove. He does have a chance to have an Akili Smith-like last season and make a ton of money in the NFL. The Vols system is very easy on QBs. They only have to look at half the field and receivers are generally wide open. Furthermore even a mediocre QB can pile up stats vs poor opponents. So I think he has a chance to have a great opening game. A big key for him in the college game is can he tuck it and run for yards like Hendon Hooker did? If he can, that'll keep defenses honest and he can fling it deep. He can easily become next year's Anthony Richardson in the draft. He could also get Wally Pipped by the Vols 5* freshman Nikko waiting in the wings. As a Vol fan, my ideal scenario is for Milton to have a Heisman like year and Nikko red shirts. Things seldom work out smoothly in sports

I'm down in Charleston, SC vacationing with the family all this week. I was stationed in Charleston (Navy), lived in Goose Creek, 45 years ago (lol). Those bases no longer exist. One of my buddies stayed down here, so we're going to hook later today. I got everyone's results so far. Just waiting for today's game.

Even though I dbl check everything, you all know the routine. Keep an eye on the old man's ciphering (lol). Only two people finished below .500, and will stay that way even after today's game. And one of them is me. ;)

I'l have the first week standings, and Week #2 schedule out by Monday morning.

Note: I know it's only the first week, but I sense OSU is going to have issues this year. O-line not good so far (3 new linemen), and we'll have see about the new QB(s).

Boston College put a scare into #3 Florida State. I think OSU's Day was trying to make a statement yesterday after slipping slightly in the polls. Alabama looked shaky, and the Gamecocks put up a fight vs Georgia (many of us took the points there). Upsets? Watching the Saturday night game, as a long time Big 10 guy, I was rooting against the hated USC and thought the scrappy Utah team was fun to watch. But then I realized I was in the very uncomfortable position of rooting for USC since I picked them to win. I felt very icky.

As I was kicked back channel surfing thru all the various college games yesterday - it was like 7 different games (life is good lol) - it was another crazy day in college football. This week had more favored teams upset then any week so far.

Ohio State lost by .5 :angry: but, IMO, it was another uninspiring win marred by the QB's turnovers. RB Henderson was on. 162 yards rushing shows improvement on the o-line. Sorry. I'm still very skeptical of this year's team. I can say the same thing about Penn State's performance vs Indiana.

Upsets? Among the ranked - Kansas beats #6 Oklahoma, GT over #17 North Carolina, Arizona beats #11 Oregon State. Among the unranked, NC State beat favored Clemson and Northwestern burst Maryland's bubble (lol).

I'm really not impressed with any of the PAC-12 teams. It doesn't faze me that Washington and Oregon are top 10. The ACC is officially in a down mode. There's something about Florida State that doesn't sit right with me, though I am impressed with Louisville.

The SEC and B10? Each has there couple of "elite" teams, some good teams that can never get over the hump of beating those elite teams (lol), your bowl eligible teams, and the bottom-feeders.

I see Georgia repeating.

We're flying right through this season with only three weeks remaining. Wow! For any newcomers, we also play the bowl games, just not all of them. We do all the "big" bowls between Christmas and New Years, which is approximately half the schedule (20-something).

A lot of us kicked butt this week. Of course Roy and UK kick butt about every week (lol).

I still don't know what to think of this Ohio State team. Rutgers is a team we have manhandled pretty easily. Can we say that Rutgers coach Greg Schiano has improved the program? Rutger's defense is much improved (4th-B10, 10th- nationally). I thought this was an interesting stat. Rutgers is #1 in the nation with the lowest missed tackle rate. Give credit where credit is due. Rutger's rising, while other perennial good programs within the B10 are either down right now, or in the recovery/rebuilding process.

IMO. Verdict is still out on QB McCord.

Michigan finally plays a ranked team this week in #11 Penn State. The #1 and #2 defenses in the country going at each other. And it's in Happy Valley!

Had a couple no-shows this week. Guys forgot; but it was a Holiday week. It took us all season, but we finally dipped our winning % under .600. Rivalry week really gave us a lot of good, and tight, games. Loved how these "elite" teams were struggling against rivals that just weren't very good (according to their record). Maybe overlooking something?

These games are going to be so hard to predict given the opt outs, portal etc

Other then the CFP games, there's a lot of insignificance in the other bowls because of this. Unless of course you attend, or are an alumni, of that school. When you have so many top players opting out because it's not the CFP, and they aren't going to risk injury and their NFL career, over it. Then, IMO, some of those games will be shells IMO.

I don't know so much about the other teams; but OSU's offense will be pretty much gutted. They're repping Brown like crazy, but who is he going to throw to again? The young talent on the roster forced into action? They'll definitely get their feet wet vs Missouri (lol).

We watch these players all season, and they get to a Bowl game; but because it's not the CFP they "stars" choose to sit it out.

How many are sitting out for Georgia? Does FSU have a chance? lol

The expanded playoffs will help in this area. There'll be 12 teams rather than 4 holding onto their players
