Ravens gave up on the running game way too early, which seems like a bad idea for a team that excels at running the ball.
Not to mention all the other ways Lamar and the guys shot themselves in the foot.

Kansas City did a good job keeping Baltimore's defense "off balance" today. They made them look very soft even though they only scored 17 points. It was a good game plan from them. They deserved to win and the ywere the #1 reason Baltimore looked bad.

As much as I hate seeing the Chiefs in another Super Bowl, watching the Ravens implode is well worth it.
Lamar is who we thought he was. All razzle dazzle but no matter how many times you put lipstick on a pig it's still a pig. He's never came through in the clutch and I doubt he will ever get an opportunity to get this close to a Super Bowl again (at least have home field advantage).
Only thing that would make this better would be if Mike MacDonald was announced as Seahawks head coach later this week.

Sure, Zen or whatever. The point is that people are going to watch and are going to be interested. Some because they love Mahomes, Kelce, Swift and/or the Chiefs. And some, like you, specifically because they hate one or more of the above. Dook wasn't great for ratings all those years just because of people who loved them.

Completely anecdotal, and probably doesn’t mean anything, but…
I’ve been watching NFL playoff games at this one sports bar near me for years. The ratio usually is 9/10 male to 1/10 female. Today it was around 2/3 male, 1/3 female. There were even a few small female only groups, which I had never seen before.
This is in LA and probably doesn’t hold up once Taylor and Travis break up (my guess is that she’s already thinking of words that rhyme with “fumble” and “interception”) but this is what the NFL and other sports have been trying to see, a wider demographic.

Campbell should have gone for it at the end of the 1st half. It was the kill shot and he had to take it. Kicking the FG was the scared play, and his team played that way for the entire 2nd half. They were better than the 9ers, just played themselves.

In retrospect it’s shocking he didn’t. I remember thinking it was smart to take the points and go up by 3 scores, but at the same time it’s shocking that he didn’t go for it there considering he *did* go for it in much worse spots on the field to be risking a turnover on downs.

No, going for it at the end of the second qtr would have been particularly reckless. Being overly reckless is why they lost. They didn’t need more than that
Fascinating that in addition to Lamar being ordinary in a big game, the Ravens lost due to being undisciplined. John Harbaugh is supposedly one of the best coaches in the league and this falls on him. Lots of personal fouls, 12 men on the field after a change of possession. Your player injuring himself on the sideline. Those are all discipline issues

Campbell just kinda coached the way he had all season. I think he should have kicked the FG in the 4th to tie it, but other than that seemed fine. The Gibbs fumble was the biggest play and the catch off the face mask was close behind.

I was thinking about the Chiefs in the 2022 AFCCG when they went for it on the goal line before half. They should've just kicked the FG instead of giving us momentum going into half.

Pros - SF skill players
Cons - Repeat matchup of 2020 SB, Mahomes
Game hasnt even been played yet and i've already seen sports media members trying to crown him as the best ever. I know it's their job to do this stuff and stir the pot but it's one of those moments where you pause because there is no actual way they can believe that at this point. Now there is a difference if they're saying Mahomes is "the best they've ever seen" as opposed to "Mahomes is the best QB", but the ones saying the later, no way.

I was playing blackjack once and this idiot kid was making all these crazy plays. Staying on 16 when the dealer is showing a 10. He hit on a hard 17 when the dealer was showing a bust card, only to draw a 4 and think he was a genius. In the end he lost all his money, but it was maddening and funny to watch all at once.
Dan Campbell is the same way. He had the Lions ready to play, and they executed to perfection in the 1st half. The 1st fourth down should have been converted, that pass had to be caught. I do think simple things like going up 3 scores changes the scope and scale of the game. I thought Campbell needed to kick those FG's in the 2nd. You needed to get points, and getting stopped helped turn the momentum of the game. I remember when the Bengals made their runs the previous 2 seasons, Taylor really relied on McPherson to kick long FG's. Detroit was the recipient of some poor luck, the long pass off the DB's face mask. Although I do think had that not been caught the refs would have called PI. But I think the game changes drastically if Detroit goes up 17 early in the 2nd half, instead of staying at 14 and seeing their lead dwindle away.

Least? All the ones I saw were calling for his head.
Yes he was too aggressive. But he didn't drop a ball right in the stomach on third down or fumble the ball right after SF cut it to a one score game. A lot of what happened in the third quarter was self inflicted.
It's easy to blame the coach but the players choked in critical moments. At least the Lions made it interesting unlike Baltimore who went into full meltdown mode.

Dan Campbell being Dan Campbell has won them more games than he has lost them!
I am not sure that is a winning strategy going forward though...its a fine line between being aggressive and reckless. Down 3 in the 4th quarter chance to tie the game take the points.

I guess I think it’s just a learning experience all around.
17 point lead at halftime? That’s where you scheme to put the squeeze on your opponent and focus on mistake free football…knowing that you are probably just one score away from icing the victory.
Dropped balls, blown coverages, letting Purdy escape…everyone just pissed that game away.

I liken it to teams going for 2 when they just scored a TD late in the game and the XP would tie it.
Not the exact same odds but there’s a “going for the win” argument. Especially if you think your team is gassed/out of momentum and doesn’t stand a good chance in OT. Sometimes you gotta try to steal it.
That said I’d have kicked it.

I have a lot of friends that are actual people, not randoms on twitter, that are Lions fans and they love Campbell and don't have much issue with how he coached.
This right here.
I think many would be surprised at how many posts on various social media platforms are just bots manufacturing outrage, to garner clicks for one reason or another.
If Campbell would have gone conservative, the bots blast him for that, to get the clicks.
If he goes with the gutsy call, the bots blast him for that, to get the clicks.
Turn on ESPN for 5 minutes, if you want to see actual people acting like bots. Same concept.
Meanwhile, ask any actual fan and more often than not they're like "meh, I'm good with the play call."
If Manufactured Outrage For Profit isn't on your 2024 Bingo Card, it should be. Just add it in-between Greedflation and En****ification.

Kinda wild how often people are saying Dan Campbell should have “taken the points" last night. Those kicks were hardly automatic! PK Mike Badgley is 50% in his career (7-14) outdoors from 45-49 yards, per @ESPNStatsInfo. Hasn't made one since the 2020 season.

I would have kicked, but it was a 48 yarder. It’s not a “take the points” situation.

@SeifertESPN
Then that is on Campbell for having a poor kicker. In today's NFL, if you are less than 50% from over 50 yards, or even 55 yards that is pretty poor. Just for fun I looked at McPherson and he is 23-30 from 40-49 and 21-28 50+ over his career. You need to be able to hit the long FG in order to be a successful NFL kicker.
But lets assume he hits the FG to go up 17 in the 3rd. You then give SF the ball on the 25 instead of the 35 yard line. Make them march a little bit longer. And even if they do march for a TD, the pressure isn't quite amped up when you get the all up 10 on your next possession.
I think playing for Campbell is fun, exciting, and the go for broke attitude I am sure plays well with his players. But at some point you have to temper that down. I think the decision to kick the FG at the end of the 1st half was the right decision. Sure a TD may have iced the game, but going up 3 scores against a Shannahan offense that doesn't play well from behind was a smart decision. They executed to perfection in the 1st half and the decisions that Campbell made took a potential 6 points off the board, and gave SF the momentum. Had they worked it was game over, heck if they make the first FG I think its game over. But we all know what happened.

01-29-2024, 03:36 PM

Those drops (chokes) tend to happen in big games. You can't coach the same way in an NFC Championship game as you would a game in Detroit vs the Bears. Just 'cause your stats say you can convert vs the Bears or the Panthers doesn't mean you can do it in Santa Clara vs the 49ers in late January. Campbell coached like he was a player and not like a head coach

Absolutely. There were two drives in the 4th quarter, where there was obvious pass interference against the Chiefs. I realize the Ravens made some bonehead mistakes, but the Chiefs only had 3 penalties for a mere 30 yards, while the Ravens had 8 for 95 yards.
Once again, in the playoffs the Chiefs rarely get called for penalties. Shocking

They are already through the roof. 115M people watched last year.
If this is a close game with the Taylor Swift factor included…maybe that gets to 120M. The biggest factor is how close the game is, that swings it by 10M or so.

I think the number of times they show her is a big objection. If she was on once for 33 seconds, that's no more time than a commercial. When it gets to be several times for 5-6 seconds at a time, that's when the complainers come out. But, yeah, a lot of it is politically charged.
What I'm curious to know is how many times do they show Jerry Jones during a Cowboys game. Or Carrie Underwood at a Cowboys game when Tony Romo was dating her. Of Bob Kraft when New England is playing. Jake Browning's girlfriend got a lot of screen time the last several games of the Bengals season. Point is that this is not a new phenomenon.

I agree, but why is it in big playoff games the Chiefs are rarely penalized? Are they so composed they don’t commit penalties? Please
Last year in AFC championship game against Jaguars 3 penalties for 30 yards.
Last year in the Super Bowl against Eagles they had 3 penalties for 14 yards.
Against the Bills in playoffs this year. 2 penalties for 15 yards.
Now another 3 for 30 against the Ravins this year.
That’s only 11 penalties for 89 yards in 4 games.
See the trend? Not hard to win when your always MUCH less penalized, than the team your playing. This in a game that a penalty could be called every play. Cleanest team ever, apparently.
